This is an interesting demo of how the Islamic call to prayer works. In the "rast" mode (like the major scale but with a slightly flattened third and seventh), from the great mosque in Edirne. I didn't know it was ever done in alternation like this. I'm not sure how much of this is improvised, probably not a lot. The mosque is colossal - it was Sinan's culminating masterpiece - and it's set much further away from the town than most mosques are. The callers will always have had to strain to get enough volume, and these guys are pushing their voices to the absolute limit even though they've got microphones. Yes it sounds a bit rough but it gets your attention.
