Subject: Mudcat DT's From: Skipjack Date: 16 Dec 99 - 10:51 AM Being a deckie learner (an apprentice trawlerman), at Mudcat, I'm having trouble keeping this thing in proportion. In short, I'm spending far too much time at it, when my employer thinks I'm trading oil. There must be tons of stuff about this previously, but can any of you time served sages give me a few pointers on how to manage this addiction, preferably before I lose my job? |

Only by overdosing on the 'Cat can you release yourself from it's frightful grip. Most 'catters find they eventually stabilize in their usage. Heck, I can get by with a mere 10 hours or so a day! |

If I spend the morning studying manuals to see how the Air Force wants me to report a background investigation according to this week's format, what do I learn? This week's format, which may or may not be the same as next week's format. If I spend the morning researching a song to post on Mudcat, what do I learn? I couldn't make my boss see that the prospect of visiting the Mudcat first time every morning actually added to my work contentment and provided motivation. And I think we should all pause (paws?) and reflect a moment on CatSpaw and his dedication as a parent which has him currently offline. I do, however, have trouble staying awake because I am up half the night catching up on the threads that you wonderful people have loaded up all day long. I confess though that I cannot blame my loss of sleep entirely on the Mudcat, I also have an addiction to a "certain someone" that I spend quite a bit of time conversing with through ICQ, and he is the one that introduced me to Mudcat. So I guess that means it's all his fault!! Whatever, I love it here, and will never try to break my addiction. (Either one of them!) TheMuse P.S. Can't imagine how CatSpaw is surviving, hope he can return soon. |

If personal time and attention is the new measure of value, then time online, no matter how swell the people you're sharing it with, is obviously subtracted from time spent with your family and local community. In fact in reading it, it sounds just like what everyone is saying right now! Nice to know that some things just never change. I have been addicted for only about 3 months and am wondering is this an annual thing with Catters? To start threads to discuss how we are all NOT addicted? Similar coincidences seem to occur frequently here on the 'Cat. 'Frinstance, someone wanted the lyrics to Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave to Me. Well, someone else asked for the exact thing about a month ago. I remembered, searched the forum and gave the guy a link to the older thread. Go figure. Is there something that triggers these coincidences? I don't know. Back in December of 1998, the Mudcat was experiencing exponential growth and was overwhelming the server Max was using. It would "crash" about once a month and we regular 'Catters would panic. It might be a few days before we could get back on. We really felt how important the Mudcat was to our daily lives. If you want to start a thread next December, you are welcome to do so. Like yourself and Skipjack, there will be some new 'Catters who are just beginning to feel the pull of the 'Cat. Welcome aboard.
