What they are, disgracefully, are a powerful, unelected lobby group that can't be opposed by any US administration. In that regard they are in the same category as the pro-Israel lobby. Speak against them in anything other than in the most vague and veiled terms and you are political toast. And this manifestation of a severe loss of democracy takes place in the Land of the Free.

the pro-Israel lobby

There are over 3,500 registered lobby groups and more than 12,000 registered lobbyists in the US. Arab and Muslim countries receive seven times the amount of aid than does Israel. But hey, lets demonize Israel on a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with Israel because AIPAC, the regime, the government, the state etc, etc.....nudge, nudge, wink, wink!

Ah, the stalker strikes.

However.

No-one has demonised Israel. I am demonising the largely non-Jewish pro-Israel lobby who exercise an undemocratic behind-the-scenes stranglehold on the US administration. Focus on that and try not to let your ideology and bigotry blind you just for once. In other words, stick to the point or bugger off, Mr Vexatious (or Miss? Who knows? Going from your past dual-identity behaviour you could be both).

Oh, and I'm cheerily demonising the NRA. Both setups, unfortunately, show how flawed our democracies are. If it isn't lobby groups it's big corporations. And it happens here too.

Incidentally, your aid figures are wildly and wilfully misleading. Israel and the occupied West Bank get almost identical sums of US aid per capita. No other country gets even half as much per capita. You "forgot" the per capita bit, didn't you? Vast sums go to Egypt (to keep them onside with the West and to stop the country from becoming a total basket case, which would wreck US interests in the region) and Afghanistan, already a west-inspired basket case, similar. And to Jordan, that other fine, democratic bastion of the West. At least TRY to be honest.

Dunno whether I'd call the NRA terrorists in themselves, Greg. They certainly encourage people to have guns, and the US has an awful lot of gun terrorism... I imagine that the NRA would rather that didn't happen, but I also imagine that they are a long way from acknowledging their significant role in making those events far more likely.

Steve, ignore the apologist for the very bad behavior of the Israeli government. Thinking people know that they continually snatch defeat from the mouth of victory when it comes to peace with policies intended to keep radicals stirred up in the entire region.

The practice of stirring up people is also a strong suit of the NRA. The NRA is the mouthpiece of the gun manufacturers and sales parties but they bear no responsibility when disasters happen - indeed - they become more belligerent and suggest that more guns, not fewer, would have solve some particular catastrophe. It helps increase sales/profits.

In 1937, the Palestinians were offered a state (Peel Commision), they said NO.
In 1947, The Palestinians were offered a state (UN Partition), they said NO.
In 1967, The Palestinians were offered a state (Khartoum), they said NO.
In 2000, the Palestinians were offered a state (Camp David), they said NO.
In 2001, the Palestinians were offered a state (TABA), they said NO.
In 2008, the Palestinians were offered a state (Olmert offer), they said NO.
In 2015, the Palestinians were offered a state (French sponsored UN offer), they said NO.
Each time it was offered and they refused, they resorted to violence against Israel. What do you think the Palestinians really want?

Don't let facts stand in the way of your bigotry.

I suppose it's way beyond their wit to look at countries which have much stricter gun laws and far fewer guns and see that it's plainly the other way round. As for bearing no responsibility, it's a bit like the UK bearing no responsibility for the Saudi attacks on civilians in Yemen using the weaponry we provided. Nice to be one step removed. That way, no-one can call you a terrorist.

You just illustrated how they work, Bobad. The Israeli government gets up the nose of the Palestinians any time there is a peace accord in order to push it off track, to make it look like the Palestinians are to blame. Now back to the NRA.

The big flap a couple of weeks ago about Megyn Kelly doing the interview on NBC with Alex Jones is because he is such an apologist (there's that behavior again) for the NRA that any shooting on such a scale must be bogus. Kelly gave him time to air his views, essentially equal time to walk all over the conversation that rational people are trying to have regarding the preponderance of guns in the U.S., easily available to mentally ill individuals and criminals. That make suicide too easy, that are the weapons used in so much domestic violence.

I could give you the same advice as you gave me, Acme. He's a waste of time. I do try to take my own advice sometimes but not often enough. Apologist can seem too kind a word sometimes.

I didn't know about the interview. The best answer to conspiracy theories is ridicule. My dad doesn't believe in the moon landings. He's read some guff about the Van Allen belts. I asked him why he thought that not a single one of the ten thousand people who worked on the Apollo programme has blown the whistle in 50 years. But nothing can stop him. Leave him to enjoy his fantasies. As with most conspiracy theorists, he harbours several other such outlandish notions. He's convinced that LBJ had Kennedy killed from his car and he has the street layout, the precise injury details and the car positions to prove it. And mo'.

Too bad a legitimate thread title and subject had to get thrown off at second post. Given the knowledge the poster had of this forum and its various adherents, a clear case of Jew baiting on the part of an ASB. The anti-Israel circle-jerk finds a new thread up which to muck.

Aw, but to contribute a thread-title para-quote, from the wingnut representing the NRA, which in the past has had legitimate aims and means, "It takes a good guy with mideast knowledge to take out a bad guy with mideast knowledge."

Everyone feel better? I really didn't think so.

"Care to provide evidence of your claim?"
Yup - it's called history Bobad
You've said it yourself a dozen times - all the Palestinians have to to is give up the homeland which has been systematically stolen from them (go look at the 'before and after' maps) and piss off and let their friends take care of them elsewhere.
Every single peace accord that has been rightfully rejected has involved the Palestinians accepting the status quo, forgetting returning to the territory that has been stolen, forgetting any idea of the refugees that have been driven out (the largest single group on the planet) and forgetting that they might have equal rights
You are the most toxically vociferous to have claimed that the Palestinians have no claim on the land they have occupied for many centuries and everybody who disagrees with you automatically becomes a "Jew Hater" - so you antisemitically blame the Jewish Paople for what has happened

The point made in the second post about lobby groups in the US was perfectly legitimate in the context of the NRA being a powerful, unelected lobby group in the US, just like AIPAC and its satellites. There's no Jew-baiting going on and the point was perfectly on-topic as further illustration of how groups like the NRA can exert undue influence in US politics, just like those big corporations and just like AIPAC. You have developed a bad habit of popping up like the worst kind of troll, robomatic, and the ugly condescension you employ is just laughable in view of the paucity of your post contents. If you want to revisit the real derailing, look again at the third post in the thread and make an honest man of yourself.

First off, I think the use of the word "terrorist" is way overused to give way too much press to any old nutjob or jobs who just want to kill people and make the news. Having said that, lookie over here:

The Gunning of America: Business and the Making of American Gun Culture
by Pamela Haag (Author)

She explains how the gun industry has driven the discussion under the convenient cover of the NRA. America's history and "love affair" with the gun was a series of brilliant PR campaigns by the gun industry over many decades going way back to the 1800s.

Really, boobs? I think I've mentioned the NRA a good few times too, boobs, unlike you, who have mentioned only the one lobby group. The one that the thread isn't about.

We campaign in this country for young men not to carry knives. The honest truth is that carrying a blade makes life far more dangerous for you. I can't see how how that doesn't apply to guns too. There are many reasons for the US gun culture, lobbying by the NRA being at the forefront. I can't help thinking that an awful lot of Hollywood macho heroes are heroes because they were good at shooting people without making too much blood come out.

Sure thing, Greg. But my mention was in the solid context of the influence of lobbies in the US, of which the NRA is just one. Large corporations exert similar undemocratic influence. It would be absurd to follow that line of discussion forced to leave out one of the most egregious examples. That's all. The resident stalking troll derailed us. I believe I should have been able to say what I did, which was germane to the thread discussion, without that happening. I'm pretty straightforward and I have better things to do than to cause mischief. But yep, let's stick to the gun lobby. I am trying.
