Subject: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 09 Jul 17 - 02:49 PM The July Press Room (In Exile) Shanty, Forebitter and Foc's'le Ballad Session is this Saturday -- Saturday, July 15, 2017 in Portsmouth, NH. Since The Press Room is closed June, July, and August for renovations and then opening under new ownership, we're meeting at Liar's Bench Beer Company, which is an old plumbing supply warehouse behind Washburn's at 459 Islington Street, Portmouth. There's a sign at the entrance to the parking lot (!) and there is additional parking on the street on the other side of Islington. The NEW HOURS for the sing at this venue will be 2:30 to 5:30 -- three hours instead of four hours. There's a photo of the space on the home page of the brewery -- http://www.liarsbenchbeer.com/ Very industrial. Instead of at the long table, we may be at a replacement for the foosball table -- but it's still a good idea for people to bring a folding chair to be on the safe side. We're more likely to need them in this space than last month. But we'll need to make sure the traffic corridor between the kitchen and the bar is kept clear. Besides beer, they have hot dogs, bratwurst, and other sausage sandwiches plus snacks like popcorn, Mexican street corn, and chips, but I don't think they serve soft drinks and water is available in a small watercooler on a side wall (which ran out last month). You might want to bring a bottle of water... I've sampled the Bru Ha Ha German Ale and last month I drank the Dry Levee which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, I've had a relapse of the bronchitis/respiratory malady and am on prednisone, so beer, for the next week and a half, is going to taste like swill. (Or worse...it might taste like Coors.) See you Saturday! Linn |

Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 11 Jul 17 - 06:49 PM Just heard from Dagan at Liar's Bench confirming arrangements for Saturday. He says that while he knows Kieran & Bruce discussed a different seating arrangement and while he thinks that would have made sense with the previous set up, they've recently opened a beer garden and doubled their seating capacity. So neither our shanty group nor their regular patrons should feel cramped as the patrons can freely roam inside and outside. It might cut down some of the background sound competition, too. Dagan again won't be there as he has another commitment, but bartenders Erin and Mike will be to keep us from dying of thirst. Linn |

Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Jul 17 - 10:20 AM Thanks for the update. However, I'm hosting a reunion of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers at Robinhood Farm that Saturday and I think I'll be too busy! Charlie |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 14 Jul 17 - 10:45 AM I do expect to be there. Came out of the north woods after two weeks with only one deer fly bite and one black fly bite (mosquito's don't count!). My beer should taste OK. Looking forward to it. Don |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: ranger1 Date: 14 Jul 17 - 12:13 PM I don't think I'll be there again this month. I have to work until 12:30, and then the dog needs at least 45 minutes to an hour of vigorous exercise before I shove the poor little dude back into his crate for another extended period of time. I don't think the 2:30 to 5:30 time slot is going to work for me, unfortunately. |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Jeri Date: 14 Jul 17 - 02:41 PM It's a bit early for me, but it's not so much of a problem. I'm in a nice rental car, and I'm not sure I want to expose it to summertime Portsmouth. (Guy came to pick me up an a Mustang, but I wasn't that lucky.) |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 14 Jul 17 - 02:56 PM We're stuck with that time slot -- they don't want us to interfere with other stuff they've got going later in the day. I truly hope this all is temporary -- I'm really looking forward to being back at The Press Room. But I haven't heard from anyone as to how the renovations and the change in ownership is proceeding. I know that the PMFF is making sure they have a back up venue for the festival just in case... Linn |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: ranger1 Date: 14 Jul 17 - 10:06 PM Not complaining, Linn. You put a ton of effort into finding a venue and I appreciate it, even if it doesn't work for me. |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Guest-Dianne Date: 15 Jul 17 - 09:31 AM I will try to make it. Depends on what time my handyman calls/shows up. I need to review some things with him. Dianne |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Jeri Date: 15 Jul 17 - 11:10 AM There appears to be off-street parking. I HATE doing the tourist slalom, and parallel parking in a rental could be challenging. |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 Jul 17 - 12:12 PM Jeri, they've got a parking lot on the side of the building. And, of course, there's more parking across Islington on the street. It's nowhere near as bad as downtown Portsmouth parking. That's one GOOD thing that's coming out of this venue location change for the summer -- no fighting with Daniel Street parking at either session location. Tami, thanks for appreciating the work and compromises necessary to find a spot. I'm disappointed, too, that you can't make it until we're back at The Press Room at the regular time. Linn |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 Jul 17 - 07:27 PM Somewhat sparsely populated this afternoon, but our voices filled the space. Beer was consumed. And a good time had by all, including the hapless folk who wandered into their favorite watering hole, not expecting to hear rowdy songs of the sea. I'll post what we sang tomorrow. Right now I'm sipping a cold margarita and recovering from sitting at the sunny side of the table where the temperature was a good twenty degrees higher than the rest of the pub or even the outside. The advantage, though, to having that bright sunlight on my back was that I didn't need my reading glasses. Linn |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 Jul 17 - 02:15 PM I guess it turned into too nice a day. It was just Nick Noble and me for the first half hour. Then the Finns arrived -- Gail, Jim, Amanda, and grandma Doris. And Don Hale survived the traffic to Portsmouth. Sharon from Cornwall (originally) also joined us and Bill, Nick's non-singing friend. Oh, and Rita Pomerleau arrived during the last 45 minutes or so. Erin and Molly kept us supplied with beer... New brews this time. Nick really enjoyed the "Bub Lite". I think I started with "Cut Off Schwartz"(schwarzbier) then gravitated to "Primetime Sunshine" because my prednisone-addled tastebuds were messing with me. So, we sang -- 1. Fathom the Bowl - Linn 2. Old Molasses Rum - Nick 3. Whiskey-O, Johnny-O - Linn 4. Báidín Fheilimí ('Feilimí's little boat') - Jim 5. The Eddystone Light - Nick 6. Twa Recruiting Sergeants - Amanda 7. (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!) Thanks, everyone, for coming! Linn |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Guest-Dianne Date: 17 Jul 17 - 12:16 PM Thanks for posting the shanty sing. I am sorry I missed it. Alas, the handyman texted he'd be here at 3:00, so I had to wait for him. Then almost as soon as we'd covered everything, he got something in his eye that caused him to tear up so badly he couldn't work. We both worked at flushing it out, took more than 1/2 an hour. I wanted to take him to the ER, but he refused. Ah well. He wound up working here until 9:00 due to the late start. My arm is fine, will heal well I'm sure. Thanks again Linn, it's fun to see who was there and what was sung. Dianne |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 17 Jul 17 - 11:51 PM #20 needs an R added to the end of the title, "Sail O Believer". A fun time as usual, even though it took over two hours to get there! Don |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Jul 17 - 09:17 AM Looks like a great assortment of songs. Don, is "Sail O Believer" the version that Dick Dufresne leads with Roll & Go? Nick, Jeff Logan with Roll & Go is working up a version of "Capital Ship." We'll be singing it with a lot of my mother's other favorite folk songs and ballads at a concert at the Portland Public Library, Friday, October 6, 7-9pm; the concert is proceeded by a reception for a huge show of Dahlov's children's book illustration from 5 to 7pm. Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |
Subject: RE: July Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 18 Jul 17 - 10:46 AM Yes, it is, Charley, including Dick's last verse. Straight from the CD! Don |
