Hey Jeri,

Have you ever seen Tamsin Greig in the Brit comedy called Black Books ?

"My major concern about a female Doctor is whether they can make her eccentric enough. Writers, IMO, have problems with respectfully whacky female characters. I can't think of any, not that they don't exist, but I'm not familiar with them. They can be serious and smart, or goofy and dumb. I WANT them to prove me wrong."

When the rumour was going around that a woman doctor was about to be spawned, I immediately thought of Tamsin Greig in that role in Black Books.

Keith A of Hertford, I'd add over-weening confidence in poor driving skills as another cause of young male deaths, or is that just the hoon culture in Oz? Do young males drive better in other countries?

Nigel, I agree about Abby. I'd place her equal with my choice of Tamsin Greig.

My absolute favourite pick for Ms Dr Who would be my favourite Oz comic actress and writer, Magda Szubanski

She started out as an actress and writer for a lot of scathingly funny review shows on Oz TV, and then went on to film roles in e.g. Babe, and the Dogwoman series (very funny, and a lot of similarities to Dr Who behaviour), and then more recently as Sharon in the original Oz Kath & Kim TV show. She can also do a mean Scottish accent because her mother is Scottish (see her character called
Wee Mary McGregor ), so she could give Peter Capaldi a run for his money on that.

Kids need good role models.
All TV detectives are now female.
There are almost no males in primary schools now and few in secondary schools.
Boys have fallen behind girls in education in all subjects and in university entrance.
Suicide is the main cause of death in young men.

Pfr, too late. I've been a Whovian since I started watching in 1979, although it's occasionally been hard to find it on American TV. There were some versions of the Doctor that I mostly missed, but every one of them between Baker and Eccleston was "meh".

I have friends here in the UK who are very much against the idea of a woman as the Doctor, simply because she is a woman - but not because they are sexist. They actually aren't, but they say it will change the energy too much. I don't think I agree with them there.

We won't get to see Jodie Whittaker do her stuff until the Christmas Special, but I am open to any possibilities. Remembering that every time the Doctor regenerates, it brings a new energy, and I was often disappointed thinking we'd lose whichever one I was used to, and then surprised to find how quickly I got used to the new Doctor, often loving him even more than the last one.

Not so long ago I was very sceptical when I saw that Peter Capaldi was to be the next Doctor, having only been familiar with him as a very nasty Cardinal Richelieu in The Musketeers. On the very first of his episodes, I was so impressed that I instantly accepted him - he WAS the Doctor. He totally owned the role. It's called Good Acting. So if Miss Whittaker is as good an actor as I suspect she is, I would not be at all surprised to find I accept her very quickly as the new Doctor, and the new energy she brings.

I think there are probably a fair few good male role models in various TV series. I have not studied kids ones in depth but watching some of the stuff my grandsons have on when they visit I can see good in a lot of it. As to adult ones, well, do we really need role models at our age?

Keith - that's a point maybe worth considering...

As kids in the 1960s we had The Man from Uncle, then shortly after, also The Girl From Uncle...

Two highly lucrative tie in toy ranges for the likes of me and my sister..

But as I'm now an old bloke nearly, I haven't a clue what the popular Kid's TV role models are like these days...???

Super heroes seem fairly evenly spread by gender...

There are almost no positive male role models on UK TV just now.
Could we not have left this one and just created a few more new female leading roles if that is what has to be done?

Nothing wrong with 'Tyke'. After all in the first episode of the relaunch (Eccleston & Piper):
Rose: If you are an alien how come you sound like you're from the North?
The Doctor: Lots of planets have a North.

This very moment, it's the episode with the Vashta Nerada space-piranha-izing library visitors.

The conjoined twins thing wouldn't work, biologically speaking, and doesn't really sound interesting, unless it's the punch line of a joke. I think one of the regenerations should be as a petulant skate-boarding teen. This would drive parents everywhere nuts, so maybe not.

Conjoined twins, punkfolkrocker? Now that would make for interesting plots.

"Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me." Ruth, 1:16

But, now that you mention it, climate change and environmental issues have never been part of the Dr Who plots, as far as I remember.

Here's one for the scriptwriters to consider;

The Doctor and Master perish locked in climactic combat..

oh i don't know.. maybe they wrestle and topple off a bridge over a high surging waterfall.. or something even less original...

Then regenerate together as conjoined twins...[any permutation of race, gender, sexuality, disability, open to possibility..]

Maybe Davros could regenerate into the gay disabled wheelchair person. If the Master can change to Missy, and the Dr can change to Ms Dr, why not Davros as well? And K9 could regenerate into a cat.

The possibilities are endless, creating endless new plot possibilities. Look out world, here's another 50 years worth of Dr Who.

The question [which can't be answered now] is...

Is Jodie Whittaker a one or two series novelty casting to appease critics of BBC gender diversification;
or will she prove herself to be THE Dr for many more seasons to come of this world wide popular TV show...???

Every now and then we have to stop to remember it's a Saturday tea time kiddies TV show,
lead by producers and writers who would probably prefer to make it much darker for post 9.00 watershed adult viewing...

[that's the Dr Who I'd want to watch..]

Hence the awkward compromises and shifts in script content and tone...???

Yes, then there was Torchwood.

It's almost a shame that Doctor Who continues a show for family viewing (although that's probably the best for the BBC for continued sales prospects)

If Doctor Who became darker it would need to be shown later, but would probably maintain most of its more adult audience.

The Tea-Time slot could be taken over by a less intense version such as Class or The Sarah Jane Adventures or K-9 and Company

What a wild goose chase....

Habemus Lady Doctor, I wanted to say. Like, Habemus Papam.

Well, I can't say "medica." Medicago, in Latin, refers to the plant family of lupines that were associated with the Medes.
Remember the Medes,
as in,
I hope that the Medes
Got kicked by their steeds?

So that would be like saying, Habemus Alfalfam, or something.

Habemus Medicus Feminam?

Staying off topic: I didn't find the executions in the book or series of "The Handmaid's Tale" that disturbing, perhaps because they are so familiar in other stories, but there was something truly horrific about Jezebel's in both.

You might be right, punkfolkrocker. I never thought of it in that light.

I just thought that, after over 50 years of writing the scripts they probably ran out of new ideas and then it all started to get a bit clouded and confusing.

When it was first screened in Oz it was weekdays at about 6 pm, so tea time. I used to get up and leave the room when the Daleks came on. The cold, inhuman voices saying "exterminate, exterminate" and that electric lightning which caused such obvious agony to the dying person.

(Which reminds me - totally off-topic - of the cold inhumanity and the executions in the new version of my favourite author, Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. I'm struggling to watch each episode because of the portrayal of "man's inhumanity to (wo)man". I read the book when it first came out 30 years ago, and saw the Natasha Richardson movie, but this one is scary - maybe in the light of current world events.)

The great thing about the Dr Who format is that it allows almost any type of story. Star Trek is close in format terms and in the early series in particular they covered some quite interesting topics. One early Star Trek I rewatched recently concerned the moral issues of a guy in charge of a colony of 8000 with only enough supplies to feed 4000. He was regarded as a mass murderer and punished accordingly but he made the case that if he had not acted almost all 8000 would have died. How can that be more moral? While I haven't watched many later series of Star Trek, none of those I have seen dealt with such weighty matters.

There have been similar thoughtful Doctor Who episodes and picking some from the Tennant era I would highlight his discussion with the Slithereen and the vampires in venice on how his actions end complete species and does he have that right; the second one I'd highlight would be his discussion on how his regeneration is like death. Reflections on a personal experience of endings of all kinds were fairly common in that era.

Much more interesting to my mind than the staple warring of much of aci-fi

punkfolkrocker, I agree about the script writing. It has been very off-putting. I came to the conclusion that the writer knew what he meant and assumed the audience would too, so didn't bother to clarify what he was actually on about.

That said, I still enjoyed the Peter Capaldi episodes.

What put me off the series was the David Tennant/Billie Piper dynamic. It was very annoying to me, to the point where I could not "suspend disbelief" and become involved in the story lines. I was constantly aware of the personalities of the actors as actors rather than getting caught up in the characters and story lines so I was not engaged in it at all. So I stopped watching and then started again when Matt Smith started in the role.

Will Fly, thanks for that memory about Tom Baker. It doesn't surprise me that he is the same in real life.

Amongst the many jobs my daughter has done, she spent some time working in the smaller, more "arty" London theatres doing odd jobs like selling programmes, acting as usher, selling tickets and similar roles. In that position she met a lot of very well known actors, such as Michael Gambon and Jeremy Irons. She tells me that all the actors she met who had "made it" were down to earth like that. "Call me Mike" had his arm in a cast and was very concerned that he wasnt putting her to any trouble sorting out seating where it wouldnt get knocked.

As you might guess, it was the actors still striving to make a name who were more likely to be a nuisance.

Dr Who, in the guise of Tom Baker, regularly used to watch our jug band playing in the Bayswater pub the "Redan" (corner of Queensway and Westbourne Grove). Why, he even bought us the odd pint.

The clothes that Tom B wore in Dr Who were exactly what he wore in real life, so you couldn't exactly miss him! Pleasant chap, very friendly and down-to-earth.

We became avid followers of the rebooted Dr Who, finding much to like with each new regeneration.
Capaldi was an excellent choice, though at barely a year older than me
I was concerned how his knees would stand up to all the running.
His choice of vintage Yamaha electric guitar was inspired..

rather took me back to him playing the bagpipes in "The Lair of the White Worm"!

Capaldi was an excellent choice, though at barely a year older than me
I was concerned how his knees would stand up to all the running.
His choice of vintage Yamaha electric guitar was inspired..

However, during his 2nd series we became fatigued with the constantly over convoluted scripting
and lazily resolved plot hole ridden episodes,
by writers who consider themselves much cleverer than they actually are,
so just stopped watching.

A shame, because the high-caliber cast deserved much better.

We planned to catch up on 7 or 8 episodes and a Xmas special, but it never happened.
and completely missed the 'Bill' series.

Now I don't even care about spoilers.

I did watch the 'special' episode recorded with Binaural sound
but was unimpressed with the haunted house story, and found the new assistant Bill to be too irritating..
an obvious kid's TV character..
Even the Binaural sound was hardly noticable through good headphones,
let alone anywhere near as breathtaking an experience as TV critics promoted it to be.

We might watch the the first episode of the new female Dr.
But honestly don't care any more.

Looks like David Bradley portrayed William Hartnel's playing the part, S... not something I've seen.

An alternative early doctor was Peter Cushing

David Bradley played Hartnell in a documentary about the making of Doctor Who as well. Hartnell was pretty shabbily treated if the documentary was true to life.

Senoufou:
Yes, but David Bradley played him (Hartnell as The Doctor) at the end of the most recent Capaldi episode.
Similarly Richard Hurndall played him (Hartnell as The Doctor) in the 1983 "The Five Doctors".

Dave, I thought William Hartnell was the very first Doctor Who?

I found the very first programmes of Doctor Who (early sixties) terrifying. Even the music was scary (We weren't used to that type of synthetic stuff) It was rather reminiscent of 'Quatermass and The Pit' or 'The Trollenberg Terror' transmitted in the late fifties.

Some of the vocabulary has made its way into our everyday language.
One hears quite often the word 'tardis' used to describe a house which looks small on the outside but is very large inside.

David Bradley made a fine job of portraying the original doctor. Can't say much more in case anyone reading has not seen it!

Who is this Doctor everyone is raving about. Any woman who wants to can be a Doctor/Nurse/Bank Manager/ Politician etc. etc.
William Hartnell was the original Sergeant major in The Army Game. Was Patrick Troughton there somewhere playing his recorder??

Hahahaha Tattie! I've just watched that on Youtube (sung by the McCalmans) What a scream! I've made my husband listen to it (and translated most of it as the accent was a bit much for him to understand) He honestly does still think a woman should be content with being a nurse, an air-hostess and a farmer's daughter. He was really frightened on the flight to Paris; he just couldn't feel confident in having a female pilot.

He had a small operation at the top of his leg a while ago. (local anaesthetic) and the plastic surgeon was...a wumman. He whispered in French "Where is the surgeon? Why is it only a nurse?" Cheeky bugger. I told him (in French) to shut up, or I'd tell her what he'd said and she'd likely let the knife slip...

I've had some wonderful bosses in teaching of both sexes. Great Headteachers.

I am looking forward to the next series more than I have for a while. I concur with Helen about Baker and I thought of the Who reboots Eccleston was best but my family disagree. I agree about Idris Elba but if you are looking for a black Who I think Patterson Joseph would have been better suited. But that is probably only because I loved his Marquis de Carabas in 'Neverwhere'.

Roll on Christmas :-)

snap tattie bogle!
I just read the post title and went online just to mention Nancy's song!!
In fact that very song was played on Uni of California Santa Barbera radio station only two or three (Saturdays?) ago, as the very last number! (I had sent a copy of the book+cd to our mutual friend Linda who lent same to her friend Rhoda whose - son? - is involved in the radio programme - -- )
Not sure what the listeners would have made of Nancy's Caithness accent?!!!!!

I'm old enough to remember the first ever episode of Dr Who, with William Hartnell as Dr. My friends and I were all doing various A level sciences at the time, and came to the conclusion, with our perceptive analytical scientific minds, that it was all totally incredible, so hardly ever watched it again!
But many years later, as a female GP, a 3-year old patient heard her Mum addressing me as "Doctor". Says our perceptive analytical 3-year-old - "SHE's not a doctor, SHE's a lady!" You just wonder what sort of gender stereotyping was going on in that family!
And for Senofou, do try to look up/find Nancy Nicolson's song, "They sent a Wumman", which is a hilarious take on all the jobs that some people think of, including our perceptive 3-year-old, and your husband, as being for males only!

Female Who sounds like an idea whose time is right.

I do wonder a bit about home life on Gallifrey. It must be odd when you partner goes out to do the shopping and someone completely different comes back, possibly even the other sex.

Then there is the oveŕpopulation issue. If the parents live hundreds of years children must be rare or we have one heck of a population explosion.

DMcG, they had the same issue when naming Missy. If they had called her The Mistress it would have been a whole different story line. Missy, on the other hand, sounds like a little girl's name or a cat's name to me, but that works too because Missy is a complex character so a deceptively innocent sounding name fits.

After over 50 years of being a Whovian, and believing in women's rights etc I am completely conflicted about this news but I'm prepared to wait and see how she is in the role.

Tom Baker rules! (IMHO)

DMcG, never had a female boss? They usually don't wear stiletto and a leather bustier just because they're in charge. (And she'd probably hit you with her whip if you asked her to dress like that.)

I'll wait to see. My main worry is she won't be nutty enough. Of the modern doctors. I thought maybe Idris Elba would make a good doctor, but he currently has a job.

If I remember correctly, a character around 1978 was Romana and referred to as a Time Lady. Calling #13 that would sound very archaic but "Lord" is not of thought of as neutral in the way "actor" usually is these days. Then the choice of assistant needs great care, especially if they are solo males: the doctor needs to be the dominant character but we dont want to get into either dominatrix territory or such a weak male assistant they are useless. A rory-amy pair woukd be simpler.

It could certainly work but good writers will be needed to handle a potentially complex relationships.

I'm probably stuck mostly in the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker era. Some programs just seem to get more complicated/refined. I suppose I could also think Star Trek at this point. I did enjoy the Next Generation but like Spock and Kirk...

Not sure any PM would make Roger Delgado as the master (don't think I'd give them the Who part) but I guess they could try...

About time too! When shall we see a 007 Jemima Bond?

My husband made me laugh when he got home from the very sad African funeral of his dad in the Spring. He had been horrified on the Abidjan - Paris flight to hear the voice of a lady pilot coming over the loudspeakers, informing the passengers she was their pilot, they'd be cruising at 30.000 feet etc. He thought they'd be crashing in the sea, the sexist pig. He can't even get over seeing female lorry drivers in huge container trucks.

Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord to be a woman

They have all been good up to now in various ways. I think she will be great as well.

David Tennant went off to be a cop in Broadchurch and Jodie Whittaker leaves Broadchurch to become a Time Lord. What do we make of that? :-)
