Subject: Where is Mudchat? From: SussexCarole Date: 17 Jul 17 - 03:42 PM Thank you Janie for reminding me of the 'good old days' we had on Mudcat and the countless hours of fun we all had in Mudchat all those years ago. So - I signed in and looked for Mudchat but it's not there...... |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: GUEST Date: 17 Jul 17 - 03:47 PM Correct me if I'm wrong people, but I don't think it's been around for around 15 years? |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Jul 17 - 03:57 PM I can't remember the timeline but I think it got implicated in one period of reliability problems here and was removed a good few years back. There were other "chats" in Mudcat history. I used to run an ICQ server (which did fine on dial up) people used to log in for Mudcat radio. And there were the Hearme and Paltalk times, used more for singing/playing together. |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Jul 17 - 04:04 PM I didn't like the chat and the bullying that went on there, but I really liked the late-night worldwide singarounds we used to have online here. I lived in a duplex at the time, and my next-door neighbor was not so fond of my participation. I finally moved my computer to a place that was not adjacent to his bedroom, and he was happier. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Jul 17 - 04:12 PM Lol Joe, I had similar problems when I was in a flat in Llandudno. Usually I kept things quiet enough but once did disturb the person below. Bought her a bottle of wine to say sorry the next day. |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Jul 17 - 04:39 PM An yep Ed, it was great to hear people, you otherwise only knew as "typists" here do something. Hours were difficult of course and I think amongst other possible reasons, got too much for me. Joe (who I have "met" that way), I think is W Coast US - quite a few hours behind me, then there was say Jacko in NZ. |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Jul 17 - 04:53 PM (Don't mean everyone who enjoyed it should have had a go above, just it was nice to say put a voice to a name) |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: SussexCarole Date: 17 Jul 17 - 07:46 PM Please stop spinning the negative. Mudchat in 2000 (ish) was magical. We all had fun, made lasting worldwide friendships (and for me, a wonderful marriage). |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Bugsy Date: 18 Jul 17 - 01:16 AM I miss the Pal talk sessions and Mudcat radio. They were good fun Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Morticia Date: 18 Jul 17 - 07:52 AM Yeah, they were good fun. I remember them fondly and truly wasn't aware there were any background problems. I remember the old faithfuls being very welcome to new bugs, perhaps distance lends enchantment. |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: John MacKenzie Date: 18 Jul 17 - 11:36 AM There was a lot of nastiness went on behind the scenes. It was actually the reason why I quit Mudcat for a long time. Yeah I know, you didn't miss me ;) |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Leadfingers Date: 18 Jul 17 - 07:17 PM There was a small group who only chatted to each other and ignored nearly every one else - Got so bad that finally Max saved himself the expense of keeping Chat going and knocked it on the head ! |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Max Date: 18 Jul 17 - 08:56 PM I thought it would cut down on the BS. It didn't. I think more than anything, I let it die off because the technology aged out and I couldn't find a suitable low-maintenance replacement. The older we get, the better we were. Max |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Jul 17 - 12:15 AM Is there a chat function in the Mudcat Facebook group? I never glommed onto chat, maybe because I tend to talk in paragraphs... |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Jul 17 - 07:34 AM Hmm Joe. Not sure about talking in paragraps but I think text chat can be difficult when you have lots of people in a room - who's talking to who??? Paltalk, a voice chat was different for us as I think as the main focus was really on the person on the mic giving a song. That said (perhaps a bit like phones to me), I could find it a bit awkward for a one to one thing. ICQ was probably my favourite in that respect as you could read the other person as they typed and have time to think, rather that a stuttered conversation - although not fool proof - did once have a computer breaking down and merrily described a hard dick problem... damn typos... Horses for courses and different tools for different people/usages I guess. Not used any directly in years but wen neice got to visit lately, did get to say hello to a brother in Oz, even saw him on er mobile... |
Subject: RE: Where is Mudchat? From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Jul 17 - 08:30 AM A drit and maybe I'm really dragging this thread to be better placed in BS but how do others react to one of those websites where a "can I help you" text chat pops up? My reaction is that if it happens when I browse for a product we might be interested in is to close the page and look elsewhere. But I guess it's similar to the old shop assistant (not that I've been shopping like that in ages). If I wanted one, I'd ask but otherwise, for me, it would be "no, just looking". |
