These YouTube videos not playable in many countries all give as their source "<artist name> - Topic" and seem to have been uploaded in 2015. Most of the artists are not Topic Records artists. Wnen I click on the source link of e.g. "Peter Dawson - Topic" I get a new page with the title "Peter Dawson - Thema", with "Thema" being the German word for "Topic". So these videos quite obviously don't have anything to do with Topic Records.

It's CD Baby putting single tracks from recordings they carry on youtube. For what it's worth the artists are not getting compensated for it,either.

But most of the Topic YouTube videos are from major labels, not from CD Baby recordings, Phil. I think the CD Baby recordings are labeled "Orchard."
I think that YouTube IS compensating artists, but I don't know how it's done.
My kid's videos are posted through VEVO. I don't know the finances of it, but he seems pleased that he's getting at least a little bit of income from YouTube. One of his band's videos was posted March 22 and had 172,336 views, but it's the first video the band has done with no video footage of the band members.

This is kind of an important question for me. I've been doing a lot of links to the "Topic" YouTube videos. They seem to be officially approved, which makes me think they're not likely to be taken down.
I'm building a database of links to songs in the Rise Up Singing Songbook and I've been using a lot of those "Topic" links. It sure would help to know how reliable those links are going to be.

"topic" is Youtube's automatic channel generating algorithm. Should be in the profile's "About" section. The "Description" (if any) was most likely by a bot scraping wiki, creative commons &c.

No humans involved pretty much.

JO "...a lot of links to the "Topic" YouTube videos. ..."

I s'pose there is no way to see which countries can/can't see them, which would be handy.
I think you often add artist and track info so sometimes I'll Google another version if I'm interested.(often there isn't another version anyway)

Glad vevo are giving a payment.
But I often don't even click vevo links as I frequently find they take an age to even open. And another age to play. (old pc, maybe they are higher quality, I can't tell) I do find yt quick and I like that I can put them in a library folder/view later.

Thanks, Joe. I just knew the topic was not in any way related to topic records. I just know that if you put a youtube search on Phil Cooper, Margaret Nelson, Kate Early, Henry Martin you'll get an mp3 of the song and a video of the picture of the CD cover. Just an example.
