Hate to be negative but the Star in the Harbour has been getting terrible reviews.

It is certainly over expensive - chicken schnizel at £ 19 + extras for vegetables is rediculous.

You can also try the new venture "Star in the Harbour" run by Michelin starred Andrew Pern if your pockets are deep enough, or want to treat your lady. It is where the tourist information used to be.

Treat the non-folky OH to something to eat and some of the fine gins in Rusty Shears Tea Rooms on Silver Street. If the Magpie is still not open, Silver Street Fisheries is an excellent alternative for a take away and Hadleys on Bridge Street provides good eat in food and facilities. Whatever you do...

During the summer months there is a train leaves Whitby every Friday at 19.15 with a bar and a live music on board. It goes to Middlesbrough and back. You can do the whole journey or alight at one of the destinations enroute and catch it on the way back.

I was there for a few days last year.

We enjoyed it enormously. Plenty going on - music in a few pubs and people were very friendly and easy to get on with.

We did the Fish & Chips - went to the Magpie, great if just a little expensive. Had to queue fora few minutes - reminded me of having to queue at our chippy in the war.

Some pleasant interesting walks.

I think your wife will enjoy it. It is not all Folk.

If you have the time I am sure she will enjoy Staines. Quieter than Whitby.

Now if you'd arranged to go the week before folk week you would have had the advantage of a lot of extra folkie folk in town to enliven any evenings when you get time off for good behaviour.
A few years back we booked our flat for 2 weeks, had a seaside holiday with one daughter + grandson, then other daughter & friend came for folk week. All the usual sessions were swelled by people doing the same as us, plus those setting things up for the festival.

Whitby is not at all like that for the rest of the year.

No such problem this year as the Regatta is once more being kind enough to share its dates with Folk Week.

Went once a few years ago. Might as well have gone to Blackpool. Prom was full of fairground rides (Noisy) and Whitby had got its first set of traffic lights. Never again except folk week

Try Pannet Park Museum, art gallery section is free and will take (me at least) a couple of hours. Admission to the main section is of particular interest to those of a maritime disposition and likely to need another couple of hours, free to locals and not dear for the rest.

The town itself is worth exploring on foot, bring stout footware and be prepared to climb steps. Parking is a nightmare (especially in summer) and driving anywhere within the town boundary more trouble than walking, as well as missing most of the interesting bits.

Steam bus has alas moved on, but steam trains still running, also ghost walks and a variety of boats trips (whales are seasonal, best to come September if you are bothered)

Folky activity somewhat diminished from its peak, but still the annual festival and the two weekly sessions mentioned, plus odd ad-hoc stuff from time to time. The area round about offers Bayfolk & Mickleby, folky alternatives if you don't mind 'out of town'.

Raggy is, I believe, in transit at the moment.

Went once out of folk week for a friend's 60th. A chance to have a lovely meal in relaxed style - not rushing to get to the next concert and session. Museums, walks, and we also did the steam train ride. Magic weekend!

Whitby is magnificent at any time of year, but unfortunately, as you would expect, it is a victim of its own success. For such a small town where all the good bits are in one small area, accommodation and parking are at a premium. But well worth it. Lots of folkies have made it their home in the last 50 years so that tells you something.
There are at least 2 folk festivals and others, as well as the Regatta. It would take several books to extol all its virtues; ah I see somebody already did that.

My OH (Not A Folkie) surprised me by suggesting a week in Whitby this year, although she had fairly definite views on which week it should be - i.e. not that one. So we're heading to Whitby in a couple of weeks' time, which will also be a couple of weeks before Folk Week.

So... what goes on in Whitby in the other 51 weeks? Any regular singarounds or mixed sessions (I'm not planning on packing an instrument)? All suggestions gratefully received.
