Somebody at camp asked that I post the lyrics for the Pete Seeger / Lorre Wyatt song "Wonderful Friends" at Mudcat. Here it is:
It's a great song, and it sums up what a wonderful time we had at Camp New Harmony this year.

I will write this on the board when I get there, but for inquiring minds who want to know: Pamela and Sadie's "Divergent Versions" workshop will cover the following four songs:

Twa Sisters
Cruel Mother
Barbara Allen
Sprig of Thyme

The leaders will start off by singing one version of the song and then participants will be invited to share a different version if they know one.

*If you have a version you really want to sing let me know in advance, and we'll avoid singing that one to lead off, and call on you first in the circle.

Sorry for the late requests. Saturday is the day for Broadway sing-along, though hard to stay out of the way of John Barleycorn. Let's try for Saturday 11:00 in Program Center (there is a a piano) or 1:45 in Cary Lodge. 1 hr is OK.

I'd like to do Old Time Piano Backup at 5:30 in the Program Center, or Helgesson Hall if Prog Ctr not available. I see that Thursday and Sunday 5:30 could work. Try for 11:00 on Friday. Saturday, we'll try to figure something out, or not do it.

Thanks.

You've got me confused, Kathrine - but I did the best I could. I put Broadway at 11 in the Program Center on Saturday, and Old Time Piano Backup on Thursday and Sunday at 5:30 PM in the Program Center. When you get to camp, please check out the venues and make sure they will work for you.

I assume that more workshops will happen at camp. Some others I'd like to see would be:
Songs 1) of the Old West/Cowboy Songs 2) Outlaws, Scallywags, just plain Bad Dudes and Dudettes 3) of the 19th Century - Civil War/Mining/S. Foster/Old South 4) from the Seven Seas, at least mention the wet stuff. I might kick one or more of these off although I'd be perfectly content to have someone else step up to the plate.

(amending the above - of course, Sprig of Thyme is not a Child Ballad either, in fact not even a ballad. But a song with divergent versions for sure)

BTW does anyone local (driving) to Camp Harmony have a 15-chord O.S. Autoharp I can borrow during camp? Mine is too large/heavy to bring on the flight. Though it would be fun to try out a 21-chord or diatonic AH I am only conversant with the 15-bar kindergarten teacher model.

Agreed - I believe "Divergent Versions" was the title I originally proposed for that workshop.

Sadie: since we are up on Thursday morning, and you offered to work with me on that, can you either PM me or email me so we can coordinate? I see that someone else is doing an entire Child#200 workshop so we should leave that ballad alone. Since I am new to this event I don't know what others might have been recently exhausted. A few suggestions: Barbara Allen, Sprig of Thyme, Twa Sisters; and for a non-Child-ballad, how about the family of songs in which the sailor/soldier returns in disguise and tells his waiting love that her lover is dead just to test her? (Roud 264,266,622,714,960: Pretty Fair Miss in her Fathers Garden, Servant in her Master's Garden, Mantle so Green, Banks of Claudy, Plains of Waterloo, etc).

Can you change the name of Sadie's workshop on Divergent Ballads to Divergent Versions of Ballads or the like? That is how she refers to it and it makes sense. Having Versions in there is important. Divergent Ballads didn't make sense to me.

I'm up-to-date with all messages posted above, except that I haven't heard specific information from Amelia about what workshops she wants to do where.
Please note that we have fewer and smaller workshop spaces than we had at Camp Newman, although I understand that the spaces are generally nicer than the venue spaces at Newman. We also have 100 fewer campers, so attendance at workshops should be smaller than at Newman. Nonetheless, there will be heavy demand for spaces such as Hollidge Hall and Helgesson Hall, and perhaps the Cary Lodge Lounge. We may have to do some juggling to make things work.

Erik Hoffman here:
Like to lead a contra/square dance workshop every day. 11 am in the dance hall (I think that's Helgesson).

Also, will have a 2-hour swing rehearsal, probably on Saturday. I'm not sure where the sound system is going to be, but probably, in the morning, anyway, in the fireplace part of the dining hall. I don't know if that room has name. How about the two morning slots: 9:45 to noon?

Thanks, Erik. I put you in Helgesson at 11-12 daily for contra/square. I blocked off the Sun Room and adjacent Fireplace Room for Swing Practice on Saturday 9:45-noon. Is that a conflict with your contra/square?

Hi Joe,

I thought I sent you a message a couple of days ago, but don't see it here.

I would like to facilitate two 2-hour workshops this year, one on Friday and one on Saturday. They should be in a location where people could sit in a circle of chairs, with perhaps some table space available also. I don't expect more than 10 people would be coming to either.

1. Appalachian Dulcimer: Learn the nitty-gritty of dulcimer playing in the first hour: How to tune, hold, strum, note, and finger-pick it. Some instruments provided. In the second hour, we will share music in a "play-around" (a song circle with dulcimers--lead, request, demonstrate, or pass on your turn) with each other. Some dulcimers provided. Other instruments welcome, but please play at a beginner, novice, or low-intermediate speed.

2. Ancient Music, with Frame Drums and Native American Flutes. Everyone can claim their birthright to music by learning to play these simple instruments. First hour: Learn the basics of frame-drum playing, including several universal rhythms; and begin playing the minor pentatonic scale on the NA flute, accompanying the heart-beat rhythm. Drums, some flutes (D-min and A-min), and other percussion provided. Second hour: An improvisational flute/drum (and voice) circle, with everyone sharing their own music within. Drum jam, create soundscapes, ask for accompaniment to your own songs and poetry--it's all up to you. Same instruments available, or bring your own membranophonic, aerophonic, or ambient instruments.

    Hi, Kathryn!
Appalachian Dulcimer Friday 4:15, Program Center
Ancient Music Saturday 4:15, Program Center.
I sure enjoyed your Ukulele Kindergarten last year.
    Joe

Hi Joe

I would like to do a work shop of "British Political Broadsides" from my book. I will give out a written book of 6 Ballads so people can join with me in singing them.

I suggest at 2:15 on 28 or 29th.

These are ballads describing working-class battle for the right to vote that I am including in my almost finished book of "British Ballads of Political Reform from 1768 to 1868."

Cheers

Dick

Thursday 1:45 PM, Cary Lodge Lounge in the Sun Room (hope that move was OK)

Joe--

I would like to do the Grand Old Time Celiedh (sp?) again this year. I'd like two hours late in the week (Sunday?), not conflicting w the 3Crown. We need a danceable floor (no carpets ideally) but not a danced floor we can't chairs on. Helgesson sounds good

    Sunday, 4:15-6:30 PM, Helgesson

Hi Joe,

I would like to lead two workshops:
Plowshares Coffeehouse Music & Stories
Songwriters' Song Swap

I prefer after lunch. Please avoid conflict with John Barleycorn (the first of the three parts).

- Susan

Plowshares: Sunday 1:45 PM, Sun Room
Songwriter: Thursday 1:45, Sun Room (please coordinate with Lisa Aschmann, who also does Songwriter workshops.)

Hi Joe, if the chapel is not accessible I feel that it wouldn't be fair that some folks would be excluded from the gospel workshop due to their disability. It would be good to ask at camp what people think.
Cheers,
Carol

Hi Joe,

I've checked over the workshop spaces, and would like to be sure that my workshop is accessible for everyone, in the morning. Jan 1 won't work, though. We should probably have at least 20 people for "Songs that Faith Petric Sang".

Thanks for getting this all organized!

Cheers,
Carol

Hi, Carol - I think the only building that has accessibility problems is the Silverthorn Chapel, up the hill at the far end of the camp walkway. I'd kinda like to do Sunday Morning gospel there nonetheless. Any objections from anybody?

We should have some sort of agreement on workshop spaces soon. Here's the word from Patience, who made a site visit a few days ago:

We have six actual workable isolated spaces:
Hollidge Hall
Sun Room
Helgesson Hall
Program Office
Cary Lodge Lounge
Silverthorn Chapel

I'll post descriptions of the workshop spaces as soon as I get the OK from Patience.

Hi Joe,

I went to the workshop page of the website and it was very confusing, all the old stuff mixed with the new.

I know there are less workshop spaces at MT? and also Paul Kostka is not going this year, but I am? and I?d like to make sure there?s a place to play Irish. Hard to tell how many people? maybe a space for up to 10? What do you think?

thanks, Shoshanna

Hi, Shoshanna - we have at least five music venues, and I'm figuring you'll want to do a session every afternoon. Name the time, and I'll find you space.

Joe, I know I have already requested two workshop spaces (ideally, not during meals or at the same time as other ballad workshops) but perhaps I could partner with Pamela R., with whom I recently spent several days singing, on holding her Divergent Versions ballad workshop?

Divergent Ballads (with Pamela R.) - Thurs 11 AM, Cary Lodge Lounge.

We would like to sign up to lead our usual Shabbat celebration at camp, on Friday from 4-6 pm, 4-5:30 pm if that?s easier. Let us know if that will work out - thanks!

Hollidge Hall Friday 4:15-6:30. (*previous session ends at 4, so I hope that's close enough. Save me some challah.)
