Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Dec 17 - 12:32 AM I'm up-to-date with all messages posted above, except that I haven't heard specific information from Amelia about what workshops she wants to do where. Please note that we have fewer and smaller workshop spaces than we had at Camp Newman, although I understand that the spaces are generally nicer than the venue spaces at Newman. We also have 100 fewer campers, so attendance at workshops should be smaller than at Newman. Nonetheless, there will be heavy demand for spaces such as Hollidge Hall and Helgesson Hall, and perhaps the Cary Lodge Lounge. We may have to do some juggling to make things work. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: GUEST,Martha Teeter Date: 24 Dec 17 - 08:42 PM Can you change the name of Sadie's workshop on Divergent Ballads to Divergent Versions of Ballads or the like? That is how she refers to it and it makes sense. Having Versions in there is important. Divergent Ballads didn't make sense to me. Martha |
Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: Pamela R Date: 24 Dec 17 - 10:10 PM Agreed - I believe "Divergent Versions" was the title I originally proposed for that workshop. Sadie: since we are up on Thursday morning, and you offered to work with me on that, can you either PM me or email me so we can coordinate? I see that someone else is doing an entire Child#200 workshop so we should leave that ballad alone. Since I am new to this event I don't know what others might have been recently exhausted. A few suggestions: Barbara Allen, Sprig of Thyme, Twa Sisters; and for a non-Child-ballad, how about the family of songs in which the sailor/soldier returns in disguise and tells his waiting love that her lover is dead just to test her? (Roud 264,266,622,714,960: Pretty Fair Miss in her Fathers Garden, Servant in her Master's Garden, Mantle so Green, Banks of Claudy, Plains of Waterloo, etc). Pamela

Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: Pamela R Date: 24 Dec 17 - 10:13 PM BTW does anyone local (driving) to Camp Harmony have a 15-chord O.S. Autoharp I can borrow during camp? Mine is too large/heavy to bring on the flight. Though it would be fun to try out a 21-chord or diatonic AH I am only conversant with the 15-bar kindergarten teacher model. P. |
Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: Pamela R Date: 24 Dec 17 - 11:23 PM (amending the above - of course, Sprig of Thyme is not a Child Ballad either, in fact not even a ballad. But a song with divergent versions for sure) |
Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: GUEST,Tom/Oregon - have banjo, will travel Date: 25 Dec 17 - 12:08 AM I assume that more workshops will happen at camp. Some others I'd like to see would be: Songs 1) of the Old West/Cowboy Songs 2) Outlaws, Scallywags, just plain Bad Dudes and Dudettes 3) of the 19th Century - Civil War/Mining/S. Foster/Old South 4) from the Seven Seas, at least mention the wet stuff. I might kick one or more of these off although I'd be perfectly content to have someone else step up to the plate. |
Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Dec 17 - 03:26 AM Up-to-date to here, 12/26/2017, 12:26 AM Pacific Time. |
Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: GUEST,Kathrine Gardner Date: 26 Dec 17 - 07:42 PM Sorry for the late requests. Saturday is the day for Broadway sing-along, though hard to stay out of the way of John Barleycorn. Let's try for Saturday 11:00 in Program Center (there is a a piano) or 1:45 in Cary Lodge. 1 hr is OK. I'd like to do Old Time Piano Backup at 5:30 in the Program Center, or Helgesson Hall if Prog Ctr not available. I see that Thursday and Sunday 5:30 could work. Try for 11:00 on Friday. Saturday, we'll try to figure something out, or not do it. Thanks.

Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: Pamela R Date: 27 Dec 17 - 11:55 AM I will write this on the board when I get there, but for inquiring minds who want to know: Pamela and Sadie's "Divergent Versions" workshop will cover the following four songs: Twa Sisters Cruel Mother Barbara Allen Sprig of Thyme The leaders will start off by singing one version of the song and then participants will be invited to share a different version if they know one. *If you have a version you really want to sing let me know in advance, and we'll avoid singing that one to lead off, and call on you first in the circle. |
Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony 2017-18:Workshop Signup From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jan 18 - 02:17 AM Somebody at camp asked that I post the lyrics for the Pete Seeger / Lorre Wyatt song "Wonderful Friends" at Mudcat. Here it is: It's a great song, and it sums up what a wonderful time we had at Camp New Harmony this year. -Joe Offer- |
