Drink water, water, water Patrish. And take aspirin, and eat what you can stomach. Otherwise, you just need to sleep until you feel better, but that's a bit difficult at the office..

Or, have a wee taste of the hair of the dog that bit you. I've never managed it myself, but have sen it's miraculous curative powers work on others.

Good luck!

Stick to Greek brandy...OR Drink milk before and LOTS of water after, take honey next morning. (So they tell me, I myself am the soul of moderation, of course- I don't know why everyone is jeering!). As Marley's song goes on "goes to my head" : red wine seems to be the worst offender!

My friend Frank's cure (but too late for you to implement, alas): when you get home from a night of drinking, but before you go to bed (and before the hangover starts), eat lots and lots of rich chocolate fudge brownies. The sugar gets into the blood stream and counteracts the alcohol, preventing hangovers. I've never drunk to the excess required to see if it really works as a cure for a hangover (though Frank swears by it), but even as a the designated driver, it's been fun to indulge in the cure along with my friends.

I have always found that it is best, when you come home to drink two very large glasses of water. The headache comes from dehydration. I also take a tylenol before I sleep.

Of course, the real answer is drink Guinness. I have never had a hangover from Guinness.

Something I figured out some time back:

If I drink beer (ale, porter, stout, whatever) and I drink too much, I get sleepy.

If I drink wine and drink too much, I get argumentative, and risk getting into fights.

It I drink red wine, and drink too much, I pick fights with people bigger than me!

So I try to stick to beer. But it's probably different for everyone.

My RN friend advises that the penalty for over-indulgence arises from the fact that alcohol is a dehydrating agent and causes temporary hypoglycemia. Thus the "folk-cures" of drinking plenty of water and eating sweets are well-founded. I have found, through limited experience, of course, that a double dose of the powder form of "Powerade" works best for me. It's a metabolite supplement (similar to Gatorade) intended for athletic types during matches, etc. My own athletic days are long gone, but the stuff is very helpful after a rigorous and hard-fought elbow-bending contest.

Did you know that the term Hair of the dog comes from Medi-eval times when, if you had the misfortune to be bitten by a Rabid dog the best cure was to take one of its hairs and place it over the laceration. Modern medicine would tell us that the antibodies therein could help to prevent the person bitten from getting rabies.

Yes!! BIG GREASY BREAKFAST!! LOL!! food of the gods, available at any decent truck-stop...

From a bio-chem buddy of mine I was given the recomendation that befor bed, drink a gallon of 2 of water and eat a couple of bananas... Something to do with replacing potassium... I donno... can't stand the things myself...

My favorite cure is the big artery clogging breakfast, followed by some physical activity... get out of bed and sweat it out... makes sure yer up fer the next night too!! LOL!!

Not that I drink a lot or anything... ;-)

Oh ya... to Big Mick.. might I be so bold as to suggest that maybe yer not drinking ENOUGH Guin?? LOL!! The low % of Guin has got me through more than a few lock-ins!

I've been blessed with the answer for many years. I have'nt experienced a hangover in years. I always remember the evening and good time we had.
Many years ago I dicovered I had a terrible alergic reaction to alcohol, I would drink and and forget most of what had happened and my brothers said I would get out of control. The next mornings is what I remembered the most, hugging the commode and and telling it how much I hated it, but it just would'nt let me go. It hung on to me like stink on a skunk. Do you think my wife would come to my aide and hold my head ? Oh no, you did this to yourself, fix it for yourself. We once did a party at my brothers house and began drinking and playing and singing music, someone thought we were so good they ran a tape recorder. I remember how good I thought we sounded. When I heard that tape played back (sober), I decided then and there that drinking and presenting music for human ears do not mix.
I was well into my mid thirties before I promised God and myself that hugging toilets, picking fights, memory losses due to excessive alcohol use would no longer be a part of my life. I still have drink, but keep a limit for myself. Sober is the key here, getting sloppy drunk just leads to hangovers and out of control.
I have to add that the best part about not drinking to much is you can drink, enjoy the evening and wake up the next morning feeling human and pissing into the toilet instead of it pissing on you.
If your idea of a good time is getting drunk, you need to find new horizons, like music, more music. But beware, to much Mudcat or music is yet another form of over indulgence. But a lot healthier and rewarding.

May I add that two aspirins and two large glasses of water before bed will make a hangover bearable. Gatorade (sports drink) in the morning will get you up and around. Add an activity like running or biking and you will be healed by lunchtime.

But as always an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Consider alternating a glass of water or lemonlime soda with your pints or glasses of wine. We all sing and behave a bit better when we're not shit-faced.

The bonus is if you stick with just two pints or so you may live years longer and get those missed pints in the end!

Cheers Fortunato

Sympathies Patrish. Last night I went to hear a friend play at Casino Rama. First time I'd ever been there. I drank like a fish., but I don't many fish with headcahes like the one I got today. I haven't been drunk like that in years. I spent the morning in bed sleeping and drinking lots of water whenever I woke up. AAAARGH!!! I'm going out tonight and I am NOTrepeating last night. Oh the music was good despite a visible audience of less than ten. The weirdest thing in the Casino is the noise. All the machines make noise and the overall effect is of an indefinitely sustained chord with little diddlebrips here and there in it. The chord is C so if I'd brought my guitar I could have played along with it. The music drowned it out but whenever they finished a song it was still there. I kept wanting to hum to it the way I do with any music that's playing.

Well, the book "Irish Country Cures" lists the following remedies:

For the headache: First you should use the following incantation. Caput Christi, oculus Isaie, frons nassium Noe, Labia lingua Salamonis, Collum Temathei, mens Benjamen, pectus Pauli, junctus Johannis, fides Abrache, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. This is sung every day about thy head against headache. After singing it, thou puttest they spittle in they palm and thou puttest it round they temples and on they occiput and thereat thou sayest they Pater Noster, thrice, and thou puttest a cross of thy spittle on the crown of they head and then thou makest this sign, U, on thy head.

Like many of you, I have been taught by the best teacher, experience, not to get poopy-faced in the first place. The only time I get in trouble now is when I forget to keep food in my stomach during the evening. I always try to keep some carbohydrates coming in as well as alternating glasses of water and whatever I'm drinking. Mostly I stick to Guinness (with an occasional Harp).

However, the times I've had the most fun was when I was in good company and listening to or participating in good music and conversation -- it's amazing how cheaply you can have a good time without loosing your land legs!

Got a scientific answer for you. The big reason that you feel so bad after too much alcohol is that the enzymes made by your liver to metabolize alcohol are overproduced, unlike many other enzymes, which shut off when there is enough for the job. These extra enzymes then start to eat your liver, unless you give them something else to eat, and the best thing is fructose, fruit sugar. So yes indeed, orange juice (with or after), bananas, any kind of fruit will lessen, although not eliminate the pain. Water is also very important, and aspririn.

Many thanks for all your suggestions. I don't drink to excess on a regular basis and the idea of hugging a toilet visiting my old friend "hughie" is not something I relish.... so I will not be repeating thursday nights' folly for a while. (never say never again)
I drank loads of water had some paracetamol and had a greasy fry up for my tea. By about 10pm I felt human again, so I had a glass of cider and went to bed.
All my work colleagues said that even though clearly inebriated, that I behaved very well and was the life and soul of the evening apparantly I am very good at impersonating people and had them all laughing. Well you might be saying "isn't it a shame she had to get blotto to be relaxed enough to have some fun"
No excuses - you could be right!
Thank you all again

Having just attended my office party last night, here are my tried and true:

1. Two large glasses of water before bed.

2. DO NOT stay in bed all day.

3. One large glass of orange juice in the morning, with two Advils.

4. Go for a walk to your nearest greasy restaurant for breakfast, preferably Kentucky Fried Chicken (IMPORTANT: Remember to bring your sunglasses).

5. Phone everybody who you may have had contact with last night and apologize. You probably said or did something horribly wrong or perverse.

Hair of the dog? I think I'd almost rather take that literally than the way in which it was meant.

Paul.

Best advise - stay drunk ! avoids the hangovers

Water before sleep, fruit juice when you surface and don't be afraid to get back into bed shortly after first rising

Diesel

P.S. Don't do it on Guinness - the colour in the toilet when you finish will put you off for life !

Greasy fried potatoes. Not everyone's headache after drinking wine is caused by dehydration. I would drink a couple glasses of red or rose and even some whites and would have a blinding headache the next day. It was several years before I discovered I'm deathly allergic to the preservatives in wine. Beer doesn't usually bother me because I can never drink enough to even make me high! Now, I drink most white zins and "better" white wines (I'm particularly fond of Piesporter Goltrophen). Also, if you are prone to migraines, wine contains tyramine, which will set up a migraine, in so time. So ... greasy fried potatoes, lots of water, and aspirin to open up those blood vessels in your head ... moonchild

Pre-script: Sorry, this turned into a bit of a screed or a rant or sumpin...

My drinking was heading way into the end zone so I quit about fourteen months ago. Not too many hangovers since then, and the one or two i have had were mild. (I get some kind of odd sensation the morning after I stay up late in a social situation...specially in a bar)

Thanks for reminding me what a good time I'm having. (Especially on Saturday mornings.) Sometimes I forget...by the way Guy how do you have fun anyway? I sorta forget that too. That is a somewhat rhetorical question.

Along the way I learned some interesting things. One is: about 70% of people who quit drinking do it on their own with no "support group", or program, 12-step or otherwise. And quite a small percentage of people that start in AA actually succeed in permanently refraining from alcohol usage, possibly 10-20%. I was and remain vastly uninterested in the 12-step approach, but the fact that it's practically a cultural assumption that that's the only way to quit if you have a serious problem with the stuff, probably prolonged my drinking. As is the case with most people, I actually quit when I was personally ready--and having taken the responsibility on myself, I have a lot more invested in staying sober than if I said "I'm powerless over alcohol." I mean what the hell kind of way is that to regain control of your life? If I was powerless over alcohol, I'd still be drinking it. Since this was a conclusion I came to on my own, I was thrilled to discover that lots of people share the opinion that you can use your personal power, rather than deny it, to get past your addictive behaviour.

For anyone who wants information or help to quit or moderate their use of alcohol or other drugs, and is interested in surveying the alternatives (generally non-religious) to the 12-step approach, two good places to start are www.unhooked.com or The Stanton Peele Addiction Web Site

But if you don't have a problem...well, you lucky S.O.B. ;>=

By the way, the best definition of addiction that I've encountered is "continuing a behaviour while knowing that the the negative results outweigh the positive ones." Oddly enough, this also helps one stop said behaviour if one looks at the situation rationally.

But there is one thing to remember. Fourteen months is not a lifetime, and if one admits if the drug is more powerful, then it also suggests that it has been fought with up until that occasion.
Unfortunately there is no other way than 'One day at a time'. Because we live that way, and everything that we do is in the present, therefore addiction has to dealt with on a day to day basis.
By admitting that one has given up the fight with this killer of many, and is now walking away from it saying "You win", then there is no fight anymore. Nothing to prove.
I'm glad that you have lasted fourteen months, and I hope that continues and continues and continues, but addiction to anything is a disease of complacency, hence the one day at a time ethic, one second at a time if necessary, because we are all just one drink away from it.

Nope, have to disagree Brendy. I used to live day by day, drink by drink to be specific. Now I can plan farther ahead (but I hate planning things)--a day is just an arbitrary measure. The worst thing I could do would be to chop my plan up into one-day units, and have to make that decision every day. I haven't quite pledged myself to a lifetime of abstinence, but the time frame I've been going on is "until I'm 60." (I'm 43). Understanding my relationship with alcohol is obviously of more than just passing interest to me now, but it's not the center of my life anymore. Better things to do.

Subject: RE: BS: Hangover Cure
From: Brendy

No, fair enough.
But there are differing degrees of addiction, and as you haven't made a lifetime committment, perhaps you are one of the lucky ones who can do that.
I will freely admit that I am, how you say, still doing field study in the area, but I certainly have no allusions about what addicts choose first.
Addicts don't generally want to be addicts.
And the saddest thing is to watch them swear off the booze, and say "Never again", only to be gone again in one week, two months, or in my case, three years.
Of course you have to plan ahead, otherwise one might just as well lie down and put your toes in the air.
But I can only speak for myself when I say that whatever method you use to stay off the booze, if it gives you hope and changes your life, then it's a good method. And that includes AA
I have never found it to be too much on the religious side, in fact quite the contrary. Spiritual yes, religious no, and I've been hanging around those rooms for 9 or 10 years. My problem seems to be that my will power isn't enough, I wish it was.
There are greater things than me in this world. If I thought otherwise I would be conceited, and therefore in the danger zone. There is a difference between "dry" and "sober".
And I, along with many others, need to be aware of our common problem every day. Nobody said anything about letting it rule your day. But the urge to drink, as you may have experienced, will take over your day and just turn it to shit. That's why I have to be aware. Doesn't always work, but there you go. Every day that I don't drink, it's a good day.

B.

Let me add that in addition to loading up on aspirin and water the night before you expect a hangover, another remedy for starting the engine up is a shower turned as hot as you can stand, and then rapidly turned as cold as you can bear it, and then back. Takes years off your brain. Not recommended for high BP or weak hearts, though.

From sometime before 1930 to mid 1934 a fairly high volume still operated on the bank of the Cosumnes River in the Mother Lode region of California not too far from my dad's ranch. The Treasury Agents got tipped off finally but fortunately my dad delayed them for several hours with a lot of obstructive tactics and misleading directions, so the bootleggers had time to dump all the mash in the river, load an eighteen wheeler up with the four big five-hundred gallon vats, kettles, plumbing and other supplies and equipment necesssary to their business and sneak out of the county on some old seldom used back roads about a half-hour ahead of the revenuers. Mind you, this was hi-grade, 180 proof pure sour mash corn whiskey and the river was at it's lowest level in years.

The next day me and my best friend went down to the river to look over anything they might have left behind and investigate the site of the big whiskey raid and you could smell sour mash for a mile or more down river. Worse than that, there was dead blue gills and small mouth bass and carp washed up on the bank every where you looked. I been pretty carefull to not drink a whole lot ever since, with one exception, and that was the night when we were getting ready to sail from Hilo for Japan to win some general a new medal and sll of a sudden the Japanese decided to say 'uncle.' And from that celebration on 190 medical alcohol, the only thing that saved me was reincarnation. No, I really don't think drinking is good for a body.

drink loads of water before you go to bed! (I know easier said than done when you have no bones in your legs, the rooms walls are on vortex speed and you think your eyes are doing pin ball in their sockets.

All else failing, make up an alka seltzer. Slug it back, then wait for the impending and reliable urge to throw up. Talk down the big white telephone shouting for Ralph - or Ruth and then feel sorry for yourself for at least a morning, have shower get dressed and all should be well.

if it's red wine there may be good reason
the darker the brew (Guiness seems to be one of those exceptions) the more congeners (fusel oils - non ethyl alcohols - call them what you will).
These obscure alcohols are harder for the liver to digest and clog it up. Hair of the Dog works (according to New Scientist) because the liver digests ethyl in preference so it spreads the digestion of congeners over a longer time.
They also recommended L Cystene which increases the metabolism & gave me the kind of indestion you get from neat whiskey.
my problem relates to a couple of pints of cider and is not what you would call a hangover so my experiences are atypical.

Loads of fruit sugars to counter the hypoglycaemia, plenty of water for the dehydration and a good fry-up to give the churning guts something to churn on.
And, just when the hangover kicks into overdrive as noon looms the following day, a bullshot - beef consomme with a large measure of vodka and a small dry sherry.
Aussie mates swear by an effervescent vitamin B-complex made by Roche and called Berocca - and Aussies know a thing or two about the getting of hangovers.
Hangovers are made much worse if you smoke or spend time in a smoky atmosphere, as the brain is starved of oxygen (what happens is a mild carbon monoxide poisoning) from veins which have already shrivelled up to half their usual diameter from the alcohol. So find a friendly medic and have a few lungs-full of pure oxygen - that'll get the ox off the roof pretty quickly.
Or you could just not get so rat-arsed the night before... ...sorry, I'll get me coat. Didn't mean to swear!

Ah ! red head are we?
It is the alcohols (those that aren't ethyl) that are (or attach to) the colourants. The liver can't digest them as fast and clog the liver and ......
is this too much info for an aching head?
So the message is less of the alcohol that has colour, and maybe flavour, stick to Vodka, and less of it.
In the same vein, might I suggest that the cure should be aimed at the imbiber not the offending cranium?
I know, I know, not funny right now.......

Typical Mudcat - What you asked for was a hangover cure and all you get is the Alkies (like Bob) telling you not to drink! A lot of people drink and occasionaly we overimbibe. This is a genuine hangover cure! The cure for a hangover is simple - take it from a professional. Stay away from pharmecuticals! First - If you know you are going to be doing some serious boozing eat well on heavy or greasy (Not highly spiced) food before you start. It will slow down your absorbsion of alcohol. Second - When you have a hangover, you are suffering from dehydration, alcohol deprivation and need an energy boost. The dehydration and energy can be replaced by the fluid and sugar in lemon-lime pop like Sprite or Seven-up (NOT the diet stuff) and the citric acid will help to refresh your throat, particularly if you have thrown up. But like any drug, coming down from the alcohol deprivation can only be tempered with a little of what put you in that condition in the first place. So mix the pop with your poison. For beer about 50/50 mix (in the UK, this is called a beer shandy), wine about 75% pop, liquor 90-95% pop. Sip it slowly, if you can get it down, you will immediately begin to feel better. When the headache and nausea have gone, stop. You will still feel a little shaky. Continue to drink straight pop to keep up the fluid and energy levels. Try to eat something light. A couple of hours later you may need to repeat the low alcohol drink, dilute it more, but it will get you through the day if you need to be at work. Remember to chew breath mints. Get as much sleep as you can. Quick, hot baths help the rest of your aching body, but don't fall asleep in the bathtub. Wean yourself gradually off the diluted booze over the next 12 hours.

"If our lives were on video tape Everything would be allright. When you head hurts the morning after You could roll it back to late last night." --Steve Goodman-- ********************************************************** Eggs and V8 juice always does it for me. Also, remember to drink lots of water the night before. Part of the hangover is the fact that the booze dehydrates you.
