Little bird, flying high,
gliding so silently across the winter sky.
Little star, shining bright,
lighting his way on this cold winter night,
Please, won't you tell me: Why is it so?
Is there something special you want me to know?
Little bird, little star shining bright,
tell me what is so special tonight!
Little lamb, white as snow,
watching the sky from the valley down below;
Little lamb, all alone,
try to believe what a joy we have known.
Now we can tell you the good news we bring.
In a humble stable is born a King.
Gift of God, sent from above
to bring us peace and love.
Angels in heaven sing of his birth:
"Glory in the highest, and peace here on earth!"
Tiny child, born on this night
will teach us love, He will make things right,
He will bring us peace and light!

I too have looked for this song for a long time. I remember hearing at midnight mass as a child! Thank you!

To address a bit of confusion here: the song "little bird, I have heard..." is different to "a special night". It's the one I remember (I don't think I've ever heard A Speoial Night before) and the tune is the same as a German folk song, Handschen Klein

My version from circa 1940 :

Verse:

Little bird, I have heard
What a merry song you sing
Soaring high, to the sky
On your tiny wing

Chorus :

Jesus little ones are we
And he loves us you and me
As we share, in his care
We must happy be

Verse:

All the day, lambs at play
In the field where daisies grow
Skip about, in and out
They are happy so

Chorus as before.

Little bird what a merry song you sing, flying high to the sky on your tiny wings
skip about, skip about, skip about where daisies grow

And that really is all I have

Gee, a 1999 request, answered in 2013. It's not a record, but it's darn close. Thank you very much, Jes.

The song is called "A Special Night."

A SPECIAL NIGHT
(Don Besig)

Little bird, flying high,
gliding so silently across the winter sky.
Little star, shining bright,
lighting his way on this cold winter night,
Please, won't you tell me: Why is it so?
Is there something special you want me to know?
Little bird, little star shining bright,
tell me what is so special tonight!
Little lamb, white as snow,
watching the sky from the valley down below;

Hopes this helps out~!

My grandmother (born 1897) used to sing this song (although she would sing 'what a pretty song you sing'). I believe she learned it at school, so it is from the Edwardian era (at least).

I can remember these lines from the 50s but would love to hear if anyone has any further verses -

Little bird, I have heard
What a merry song you sing
Soaring high in the sky
On your tiny wing

Jesu's little friends are we
And He loves us, you and me
As we fly to the sky
We must happy be

- as near as I can remember

My brother's variant was:

Birdie, birdie, in the sky,
Why'd you do that in my eye?

At school in the 60s we sang a hymn, the lyrics

Little bird, I have heard, what a merry song you sing.
Flying high in the sky, on your tiny wing
Jesus little ones are we, and he loves us you and me,
As we share in his care
We shall happy be

Little birdie flying high,
dropped a message from the sky,
and as I wipe it from my eye,
I thank The Lord that cows don't fly.

In the late fifties, Ffyfes bananas were giving away a plastic banana-shaped thing, it had eight holes I think, and a terrible tone. I drove my parents mad playing 'Little Bird' on it. Does anyone else remember those plastic banana whistles? (Wish I'd kept it, quite a fun item nowadays!)

LITTLE BIRD, I HAVE HEARD, WHAT A MERRY SONG YOU SING
SOARING HIGH, IN THE SKY, ON YOUR TINY WING
ALL THE DAY, LAMBS AT PLAY, IN THE FIELDS WHERE DAISIES GROW
SKIP ABOUT, IN AND OUT, THEY ARE HAPPY SO.

ALL GODS LITTLE ONES ARE WE
AND HE LOVES US ??????????
???????????????
???????????????
WE ARE HAPPY SO.

The ???? means these are words I have forgotten. Haven't sung this for about 55 years so not bad in the memory dept.

I remember something similar when learning to play the recorder in the fifties:-

Little bird, I have heard, what a merry song you sing,
Flying high in the sky on your tiny wing.
Jesus' little ones are we, and he loves us you and me.
As we share in his care, we will happy be.

A bit mawkish, but we were only seven!

As mentioned by Jacob, the song "A special night", is a Christmas song written by Don Besig. If you want to purchase it, I've had great success with Day Murray Music on-line. It's a beautiful song, and have had two choirs sing it for different performances. Good luck!

I'm trying to locate the title and words to an old children song. I've searched litterally everywhere for it and to no luck. I hope somebody out there can help. This is the only words that i can come up with "little bird flying high... flying so softly (or gracefully) across the winter sky"
