Subject: RE: hey, yodel fans From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 14 Sep 17 - 08:30 AM Not a particular fan of yodeling but I recall hearing a fieldrecording made on a Swiss mountainside of some fine yodeling, right in the middle of it there was a tremendous clap of thunder. The Shepherd being recorded never missed a beat, brilliant. Couldn't immediately find a copy but worth hearing. |

Subject: RE: hey, yodel fans From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 14 Sep 17 - 09:19 PM Hi, Don. Thanks for the link to Taylor Ware. She's delightful. As for Angela, I don't think she made that recording at the age shown in the picture. I believe the photo is just a publicity picture from somewhere. However, that may turn out, her voice is the first voice I have ever heard which can be described as crystalline. And the lyrics are good; so many yodel songs have dumb lyrics, but not this one. |
Subject: RE: hey, yodel fans From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 15 Sep 17 - 02:23 PM Hi, Chanteylass. Were you new to yodeling? Once you go on YouTube and start following the yodel trail, you come upon a great variety of things - yodelling cowboys, yodelling Swiss maidens, yodelling choirs and yodelling clowns. I enjou it all - except sometimes the clownish yodelling gets downright corny and I turn it off. |
Subject: RE: hey, yodel fans From: ChanteyLass Date: 15 Sep 17 - 08:31 PM Leeneia, I have enjoyed hearing yodeling for many years. Western music didn't get much play in RI when I was growing up, but once in a while it could be heard on a variety show. One of the original Mickey Mouse Club Museketeers, Darlene Gillespie, occasionally yodelled on that show. (I liked Annette but liked Darlene more, but I guess Walt Disney disagreed with me). As I began listening to folk music, I heard yodellers from other parts of the world. I still don't hear it very often, but last night I had fun clicking on one YouTube video after another. At times like that, YouTube really is a rabbit hole! |

Subject: RE: hey, yodel fans From: Will Fly Date: 17 Sep 17 - 07:21 AM Not many people know that, sometime before he started playing rock'n roll, Bill Haley was a champion yodeller of the USA... Whodathunkit. |
Subject: RE: hey, yodel fans From: ChanteyLass Date: 17 Sep 17 - 02:25 PM Leenia, thank you for that link! Of course I went down the rabbit hole again, looking at her other videos. Will Fly, I had no idea about Bill Haley. I'm going to try to avoid falling down another rabbit hole by looking for his videos! |
Subject: RE: hey, yodel fans From: ChanteyLass Date: 17 Sep 17 - 06:06 PM Uh-oh! I'm pretty sure now that that's not Darlene yodeling even though it's the segment I remembered--or misremembered. When I first viewed it, I thought her face looked different but decided it was because her hair was loose instead of in braids. I went back to the video today and clicked on the tiny triangle to see more information and noticed the name of a guest star, Roberta Shore. I googled her name and read that Roberta did the yodeling for the It's a Small World ride at the Disney parks! Now I wonder if I ever heard Darlene yodel. |
Subject: RE: hey, yodel fans From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 18 Sep 17 - 05:44 PM Hehe I'm luring you down the rabbit hole with a link to Bill Haley yodelling yodeler's lullaby It's a good song for a beginning yodeler. Thanks for the info about Darlene and Roberta. |
