Wikipedia says: The memorable traditional tune "When The Boat Comes In" was adapted by David Fanshawe and sung by Alex Glasgow for the title theme of the series. Fanshawe also composed the incidental music.

I think that's correct - I didn't see the other credit.

I was disappointed when Jack was killed - I'd always hoped the series would go on to a time when the 1945 Labour government was elected and that Jack Ford would be one of the new MPs.

Can someone post a few of the words please? If this is the song I think it is it would be a reworking of the Sunderland song 'Till the tide comes in' which can be traced back to 17thc broadsides.

I can recall hearing Johnny Handle singing the song long before Alex Glasgow "wrote" it.

Enjoyed the poetry programme from the city of culture tonight on the beeb. What was the venue?

Chapter and verse on Wikipedia gives you the 1820s author and plenty of other info. Job done.

On the wikipedia entry Alex Glasgow is credited with writing the song "Dance to your daddy" or "When the boat comes in" - Whichever.

The musical arrangement is credited elsewhere.

There is no doubt that Alex Glasgow sang the arrangement for the television series.

Where I have problem is if in fact Alex Glasgow claimed he wrote the song and claimed it as such to PRS then this at best dishonest.

It would be interesting to find out if such were the case(that Glasgow claimed to have written the song)how much he received in royalties.

Alex Glasgow adapted a traditional geordie song, he didn't write it, no doubt it's ' his ' version, but he wasn't the author.

PRS have no idea what is traditional (i.e., public domain). I seem to remember you once offered them my services which were not taken up.
They appear to simply hoover up everything, quite the opposite of Robin Hood I believe.

And Sony are still collecting royalties on Happy Birthday to You although the writer - an American lady - has been dead over a hundred years.

Sony's dishonesty has been highlighted elsewhere on Mudcat regarding ownership of private filming of personal material that has been uploaded to the web.

Mozart has been dead even longer but PRS still insist on collecting licensing fees for his music.
