Does anyone know of a song which talks about putting a(the) goldfish in your pocket? There was also something about a hole in the bucket. My grandmother sang it to me many years (60) ago.

Is that a goldfish in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?

There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza,
There's a hole.

Then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it.

With what should I fix it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what should I fix it, dear Liza, with what?

With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, with a straw.

But the straw is too long, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The straw is too long, dear Liza, too long.

Then cut it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then cut it dear Henry, dear Henry, cut it!

With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, with what?

With an ax, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With an ax, dear Henry, an ax.

But the ax is too dull, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The ax is too dull, dear Liza, too dull.

Then, sharpen it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then sharpen it dear Henry, dear Henry, sharpen it!

With what should I sharpen it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what should I sharpen, dear Liza, with what?

With a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, a stone.

But the stone is too dry, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The stone is too dry, dear Liza, too dry.

Then wet it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then wet it dear Henry, dear Henry, wet it.

With what should I wet it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what should I wet it, dear Liza, with what?

With water, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With water, dear Henry, dear Henry, with water.

But how shall I get it?, dear Liza, dear Liza,
But how shall I get it?, dear Liza, with what?

In the bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
In the bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, in the bucket!

But there's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, a hole.
There's a hole.

Highly unlikely to be the one your grandmother sang, but there is a whole mess of filth masquerading as a song https://genius.com/Snoop-dogg-bring-it-on-lyrics, which includes the phrase "Why did the little girl walk around with a gold fish in her pocket?"

I thought it might be the "dear Liza" song, but my sister insists it's not since it doesn't mention a goldfish. I'm trying to convince her our grandmother made up verses. The song has been driving her crazy.

Hi, Elliott-

Shine the bright lights on your sister and interrogate her thoroughly. See if she can remember any other snippets of the song. Have her sing it to you, and tell us if it sounds anything like "there's a hole in the bucket."

I really love children's songs, and I'm going to be really frustrated if we can't find this one.

Thanks.

-Joe-

In the 40s, 50s, you could get a goldfish in a jam jar from the rag-and-bone man, if you gave him things when he came on his rounds (shouting "ragironbo") and I also remember goldfish in little plastic bags as prizes at the fair.
So I suppose you could have a goldfish in your pocket ... and add a verse to Lisa & Henry's song.
