From: Mark S
Date: 18 Dec 99 - 10:26 PM

Had a song fragment in my head for years and cannot find it. Does anybody recognize the song which had, in part,

...Now I finally realize, I never knew the color of your eyes....

Anybody who can help will be making a great contribution to my mental health! Thanks

Mark S

A gargoyle is an ugly looking bastard, made of stone, that hangs up on the coners of old buildings and usually has rain-water dripping from it's mouth.

Sound familiar?

My dearest _gargoyle
You are an ignorant, self-centred prick. Every once in a while you spew forth your insincere, diarhetic apologies and offers of peace. Since most of the fine people here choose to believe the best in others, they happily accept, only to receive the blunt barb of your flatulent insults in return.

You think that this makes you intellectually superior - this ability to fool nice people with niceties - but any imbecile can do that. It only shows that you are incapable of positive interaction, and do not remember any of the manners that your mother tried to teach you.

When you attack a newcomer, you are chasing away new people to discuss music with - an activity you claim to enjoy - and new people to hurl insults at - an activity we know you enjoy. This is another indication of what a short-sighted jackass you really are.

Mark, please don't let the gargoyle or myself form your opinion about this forum. The majority of people are very friendly and will answer all of your questions. Please stick around.

Honestly, you guys have become so over-sensitive to the Garg. Hunter's post is far more offensive than Gargoyle's in this thread. I don't know if GG was joking around or if he was being a jerk, but I certainly am not inspired by him/her to spout dirty insults and talk down to him/her at every opportunity. GROW UP, HUNTER!!! A little more objectivity is in order.

Margo

Researched the words quite thoroughly, and scanned/read hundreds and hundred of lyrics with "eyes" and "realize", first last night and then again tonight.

This is Mark's "first post" to the MC.... before investing the time....it would be nice to know at least a schmidgen of background.

Mark, is this a ballad, a country, a folk, a pop-rock, a hard-rock, a punk?

I've hit dead ends on your request....and on the surface it appeared to be an easy one.

Thanks to everybody for the help. The background - I remember the song as a ballad, heard in 68 or 69 while I was in the army. A romantic breakup at the time kept the line in my head. Could have been from one of the "guy groups" performing then, The Four Aces, The Lettermen, etc. Of course I could be misremembering the lyrics, its been a long time. Could have been, for example, ...Now at last I realize..., instead of finally. Some personal background as well - I'm an old non apologetic folkie from the 60s, and old enough to remember Jessie Colin Young as a folksinger and Dave Van Ronk playing and singing for free at Washington Square Park in New York City! So thanks again to all, and I am very glad to have found this site. I will continue to check in.

GGH, I feel you are over reacting and actually having the opposite result. You have people sticking up for GG. Even me. Wise up please, or, like GG we'll start ignoring your posts. Even GG. HAHAHAHA!

I hung at Washington Square at that time too. I wonder if we would know each other. Did you have a nickname by any chance? I, unfortunately, was just known by Annie. I hung at the Night Owl. I was living with Joey Marra, the owner at the time. It was good times.

Love, annap

A hearty welcome Mr. Mark!

I've drawn a total blank to this, never realized how many eyes are in songs.....however, have noticed through researching this that lyrics writers, if they used "eyes" once... they used it in MANY other songs they wrote....or if they used the word "feeling" it likewise was found in most of the their other songs were touch oriented, or if they used "hear" likewise most other poems had sound references. It appears that the writers are sensory orientated to predominently one sensation.

Too bad about the lose of your mind....however, this place should help renew your mental health.

Made me think of another half-remembered song- "Smoke gets in your eyes." I tried "smoke" on digitrad and couldn't come up with it, lots of others with that word, however.

Subject: Lyr Add: UNTIL I ALMOST DIED (Blake Babies)
From: Amos
Date: 14 Jul 01 - 11:09 PM

I doubt this is it -- it's by a contemporary group called the Blake Babies:

Until I Almost Died
Blake Babies

I never knew the color of your eyes
I never cared because I was so high
All the money's gone, but I can sing a song
And I never thought I had a pretty voice until I almost died
I never told you what I really felt
I didn't think I deserved to ask for your help
But you never left my dreams
And to sleep was peace
When my body gave out it was so, so weak
Until I almost died
Keep the violins away
That was yesterday
Seeing a reason in a heavy hand to keep me awake
A slap or a break
The kind of love that becomes hate
Now little things don't mean a lot
And mistakes I can forget
 I can start again
I never could, until I almost died

I found the one I was thinking of- "Smoke gets in your eyes." It was written for "Roberta" in 1933 by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach. It shows up quickly on a search engine, so no need to put it here. Hope you find your song. I would like to see it.
