Subject: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Donuel Date: 21 Nov 17 - 09:03 AM I was taught the Thanksgiving legend was about the kindness of strangers / Indians helping settlers survive the winter. Later Honest Abe saw the value of this holiday. Now its about family and the start of Christmas shopping and non stop Christmas carols. Whatever its about, have a good one. Remember you're not a hypocrite leaving political bile in social media where it belongs and keeping the family get together free of the obvious intentional divisions. PS Happy harvest celebrations to our cousins across the sea. Thanks! |

Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Amos Date: 21 Nov 17 - 02:04 PM I will be very grateful for the energy and skill that others expend on my behalf, both directly and indirectly. Other things for which gratitude wells up: the love of good companions, of family, and of kind souls in small towns. The wealth provided by long experience and a sense of humor. A life free of entangling bureaucraciers and multi-tiered administrative gobbledygook (except, of course, when dealing with gummint agencies, health care organizations, insurance, taxes, and large corporate help desks.) A long life in good health, more or less, and a head full of wonderful songs and the will to sing 'em (regardless of ability). A wife I could not live without, a son in whom I am right proud, and a dog who seems to adore me, when hungry.. A fine holiday to one and all throughout the far reaches of Mudcat land! |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Mrrzy Date: 22 Nov 17 - 07:47 AM That is what I need... a hungry dog. Happy Gobbles, one and all! |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Donuel Date: 22 Nov 17 - 01:38 PM What we do may seem insignificant but it is supremely important that we do it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: keberoxu Date: 22 Nov 17 - 10:28 PM A thing was stated to me which I had never heard before, uh, o-KAY, I heard it in the radio broadcast actually. Thanksgiving Eve (that's tonight) is the heaviest drinking night of the year. Really? |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: leeneia Date: 23 Nov 17 - 09:44 AM We're going out to a friend's family farm for the big feast, contributing deviled eggs, which will disappear in a trice, if history is any guide. On the way, we'll check pastures for migrating birds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: keberoxu Date: 23 Nov 17 - 08:20 PM Dunno about Thanksgiving Eve. However, am spending Thanksgiving Day at a hotel with an attached restaurant. It's the kind of restaurant with a pool table and with the stuff that pool players like to drink. Walking through the lobby past the indoor entrance to the restaurant, I could hear a voice bellowing and roaring something about the cue ball and SHADDUP!! Didn't hear anybody snapping cue sticks into splinters though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: leeneia Date: 24 Nov 17 - 06:10 PM I think the radio was wrong about the drinking. Who knows how much people are drinking in the privacy of their homes? I do think it likely that a lot of alcohol is PURCHASED at Thanksgiving. People are probably stocking up for holiday parties all the way from Thanksgiving to New Years. I had a pleasant feast out at the farm. Our hosts simply can't stop themselves from cooking. There were two large turkeys, four kinds of dressing and four kinds of pie, all homemade. There was a shortage of vegetables, though. Somebody had sliced eggplant, zucchini and red pepper into slabs and grilled them. They looked like little dead sea creatures. Next year I will offer to bring mixed vegetables with butter and a little rosemary. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Nov 17 - 09:31 AM This year I roasted vegetables because I wanted an extra dish since there were three vegetarians at the meal. It was quite a hit - roasting them according to type then combining. I tossed them in olive oil with salt, fresh ground pepper, and chili flakes before baking. There was only one bottle of wine, brought by a friend, and a portion of it ended upon on the table cloth, my plate, and on me when my grown daughter knocked over her glass. Everything on my plate was okay with the alcohol, though I did absorb some of it with a paper towel before proceeding. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: keberoxu Date: 21 Nov 18 - 06:40 PM From the first post on this thread to this post, a long, cold, stormy, snowy, icy winter came between. One can only guess what winter holds this year. But regardless, sincere best wishes to all while the US observes Thanksgiving during this long holiday weekend. |

There were bobolinks in the pasture recently, much to the excitement of local birdwatchers and much to the amazement of the farmers, who watched the cars lined up on the back road with drivers talking to each other on their phones. |

Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Donuel Date: 26 Nov 18 - 12:26 PM the eternal thanksgiving is to spend every second of 1 full minute to think of someone who helped you along your way. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Nov 18 - 07:40 PM We don't do Thanksgiving back here, but I always feel friendly towards it, since it is always pretty close to my birthday 26th November, and sometimes falls on it. So greetings, and special thanks this year to various Mudcatters who worked out up that this year I've reached my 80th birthday and sent me best wishes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: keberoxu Date: 21 Nov 20 - 09:35 PM Why not now ... it's the weekend BEFORE the US Thanksgiving holiday. Some Mudcatters have left us, some new ones have joined us. Some of us have lost loved ones. We elected a new and different US President this month. We are learning how to stay alive and connected in the presence of a pandemic which requires us, in order to survive it, to stay socially distanced and practice scrupulous hygiene. There is much to reflect on, this Thanksgiving season. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Stilly River Sage Date: 21 Nov 20 - 10:28 PM It was nice to read a few voices from the past. And this is a good thread to keep going this week, I think more than a few will need to consult with others and can use the consolation offered. One day at a time. No turkey this year (but I think I will do a large chicken and share it.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Donuel Date: 22 Nov 20 - 07:38 AM Its Heart Warming to hear from you. The airports are packed unfortuntely. Everyone can afford to lose or day or two. We've given holidays a pass historicly It would be nice to have a hug or two. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Donuel Date: 22 Nov 20 - 09:24 AM Happy Thanks giving to all the Lonely. It looks like Pinterest is going all in for the one person Thanksgiving. Be the first on your block to get the Siri and Siri like apps to create a dialog of the crazy Thanksgiving uncle, the critical mother in law, crying kids, Debbie Downer and Karen like creatures. Toys are also influenced by current events like "Don't breathe on me" Elmo, "i'm so worried" Telly and "EV'RYTHINGS GREAT" Trumpybear. Quick and easy recipes are abundant like the six 5 hour energy drinks on a plate and Goblet of Gin with chaser of Nyquil for that turkey melatonin effect. Don't forget to put the Lions game on and turn on the holiday audio version of stupid off color exclamations, celebration and anger of inevitable defeat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: keberoxu Date: 22 Nov 20 - 06:11 PM I have spent the past nine months or so at a residential-treatment mental health clinic. Thanksgiving and most likely the later holidays at the end of the year will be here at the clinic for me. The residence kitchen will have a festive-style traditional menu planned. We residents will be socially distanced in the dining room, and some of us will get our meals on a tray in order to carry dinner out of the dining room and dine elsewhere in the residence. I feel grateful, privileged, and fortunate not to be alone and to be somewhere with other people and excellent care. |

Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: keberoxu Date: 24 Nov 20 - 09:08 PM I heard on the radio newsbreak today that Los Angeles, the city of (officials) are officially pleading with its citizens not to hold any super-spreader gatherings on Thanksgiving. |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: Mrrzy Date: 26 Nov 20 - 10:46 AM Watched Pieces of April. Listened to Alice's Restaurant. Roasted a cornish game hen [how many words in that phrase are lies? Trick question: all 3] stuffed with garlic and rosemary. Side of snail buttered tiny whole cabbage and some cauliflower edges left over from cauliflower steaks earlier in the week. Missing pie, is all. Last Saturday at the market there were pies about 10cm across. I shoulda gotten one... |
Subject: RE: BS: Thanksgiving greetings From: pattyClink Date: 26 Nov 20 - 11:15 AM Greetings, thankful for all the wonderful song-sharers on Mudcat, among other things. Sunrise over a little mountain range this morning in Arizona. Dashed out for provisions yesterday; grateful someone cooked me a rotisserie turkey breast and baked me a sweet potato pie. Could not score a covid test in time to rendezvous with a handful of kin. 's okay, we will have a Zoom with the whole clan today. Debating whether they will tolerate singing 'Over the River and through the Woods' or not. A toast to the sometimes beleagured art of Appreciation! |
