I awoke this morning with this in my head..must purge.

YOUR LITTLE BAND OF GOLD
As recorded by Hank Snow on "Songs of Tragedy" (1964)

1. On the raging field of battle, in a dugout dark and cold
Lay a soldier boy in tears and wracked with pain.
We gathered close beside him as our captain said a prayer.
We knew his chance to live was all in vain.
He opened up his big blue eyes and smiled through flowing tears.
These last few words then to our captain told:
"In this pocket near my heart, sir, is a message; send it please,
And with it send this little band of gold.

CHORUS: "I promised you, sweetheart, someday I'd meet you;
Your tender form close to my heart I'd hold,
But, I'll never keep that promise; I have trod the last long mile,
But I'm sending you your little band of gold."

2. We laid him down in silence; 'twas so hard to leave him there.
Our hearts were heavy as we walked away,
But we know tonight in heaven there's another soldier boy
Who'll be marked a hero on that judgment day.
We wrote his dear old mother, sent his love to folks back home,
And told her, God had called him to the fold,
And the message to his darlin' we so caref'lly mailed away
With his picture and her little band of gold. CHORUS

sorry I hit the wrong button.

I think I learned this from Gene Autry, not Hank. However, I do know many of Hanks songs, one of my favorite performers.

Subject: Lyr Add: BAND OF GOLD (from Don Cherry)

BAND OF GOLD
Words by Bob Musel, music by Jack Taylor.
As recorded by Don Cherry, 1955.

I've never wanted wealth untold; my life has one design:
A simple little band of gold to prove that you are mine.

Don't want the world to have and hold, for fame is not my line;
Just want a little band of gold to prove that you are mine.

Some sail away to Araby and other lands of mystery,
But all the wonders that they see will never tempt me.

Their memories will soon grow cold, but till the end of time,
There'll be a little band of gold to prove that you are mine.

Don't want the world to have and hold, for fame is not my line;
Just want a little band of gold to prove that you are mine.

That last one was a pop song in the 1950's. It was titled "Band of Gold" and was a hit for pop singer Don Cherry in 1955-1956. Written by Bob Musel & Jack Taylor.
