Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Stanron Date: 03 Oct 23 - 04:45 PM I got that too. I hunted around and eventually found a "Proceed anyway" button. I clicked on that and here I am. You might have to click on "Advanced" first. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Steve Shaw Date: 03 Oct 23 - 06:01 PM The website's certificate has expired. I pointed it out in a polite new thread. It's happened before and there's no need for alarmist talk. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 Oct 23 - 12:04 AM That has been discussed in a related thread. There is no www in the Mudcat url, so if it is added in the blickifier it won't work. Mudelves spend time fixing those when they show up. |

Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Joe_F Date: 07 Oct 23 - 05:27 PM Even after the problem was solved, my browser couldn't recognize the URL. That turned out to be because these days the URL must not contain "www". |

Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: keberoxu Date: 18 Dec 17 - 03:35 PM Thank you, Mud Elf, for the PM explaining whence-the-bonk. And yes, I DO feel better now. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: GUEST,who put the bonk? Date: 18 Dec 17 - 01:54 PM I still wanna know what "bonk" was about. If I may pose a more specific question, it would be: who put the bonk in the bonk screen? Had the screen shown me "service not currently available," I could have understood that and not taken it personally. Instead, when I tried to link to the log-in screen -- never mind actually logging in -- up comes blank white all across the screen except for the upper left corner which has bonk in it. I mean, that's what happened two days ago. Whence this bonk? Is it a part of the Mudcat mechanism? Was it put there personally by a computer person? Was this person our own Mudcat Max, or was this done WITHOUT Max's say-so? fine, Call me paranoid -- like the Fear-Mongers' Shoppe on the Prairie Home Companion. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Jeri Date: 18 Dec 17 - 11:49 AM Oh yeah, Nigel, it's "Etta". Reminds me to put my Etta CDs in the car. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Jeri Date: 18 Dec 17 - 11:41 AM "Days on end" - not so much. A couple of days, maybe. Come up to New Hampshire if you want days on end. I'm guessing he could tell us details of what was going on, when it was going on, if he didn't have to try to fix it and engage in life. I can manage to not freak out for a couple days. If you log into Mudcat the way it's designed (Joe's link), Mudcat will poke a server. You can tell which one serves you (for tipping purposes), because it's in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. "Muddy" is one of the servers. There were a few others. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Dec 17 - 11:16 AM It's best not to use those alternate server names. Mudcat is designed to operate at this URL: https://mudcat.org/ Those other URLs are primarily for administrative access. Using them can cause us problems - at least, that's what Max told me. There were a number of people who had cookie problems last week, and some were not able to reset their cookies for a day or two. Max lives in State College, which seems to have some of the worst weather in Pennsylvania. He gets nasty storms that knock his power out for days on end. And then Mudcat doesn't work, and he can't tell us what's happening. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 18 Dec 17 - 08:35 AM 'muddy' is one of the servers used (see by the logo top left of page) The servers take names from Blues artists (I think). There's also an 'Ella' |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Steve Gardham Date: 18 Dec 17 - 08:22 AM With you, Steve. What's all this 'bonk' and 'muddy'? My screen just says something like 'offline' or 'service not currently available, try again later'. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Steve Shaw Date: 17 Dec 17 - 08:29 PM Calm down, everybody. If the guy who runs the show has to shut the bloody thing down for an hour or ten, for reasons best known to himself, the same himself wot is paying for all this, then just get on with the rest of your life and look in now and again to see when all is back. |

Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 17 Dec 17 - 02:14 PM My heartfelt thanks to GUEST some bloke. That screen just saying "bonk" happened to me too. I took it very personally indeed. Now I know it wasn't just me. You have no idea how much I needed to know that. Thanks and season's best. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Jeri Date: 17 Dec 17 - 10:48 AM Doug Chadwick, I sort of had to interpret, because Mudcat HAD been down just before he posted. Too many questions about what means "log in". The vagueness doesn't stop us all from making suggestions, though. Steve Gardham, moderators don't close down the site. The only person who can do that is Max, and he probably doesn't have time, plus I believe many times, Mudcat is down and he didn't do it. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: DaveRo Date: 17 Dec 17 - 10:35 AM It's possible that the OP had been accessing the old http site as RtS described, maybe using an old bookmark. If so he probably would not have been able to log in because the link would have taken him to the new https site which was unavailable. If he had already been signed in he would probably have been able to post - as RtS himself did at 05:38 and 05:43 AM that day - when I think the main site was unavailable. |

Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Steve Gardham Date: 17 Dec 17 - 09:42 AM If the moderators were closing down the site for maintenance it would be helpful if we were given some notice. Otherwise we must presume the site not being available is due to some glitch beyond their control. |
Subject: RE: Can't log in, is there a problem? From: Jeri Date: 17 Dec 17 - 09:34 AM If you're posting a message on Mudcat to say you can't post on Mudcat, it's a little weird. Click here to see if Mudcat is up. |
