BA are suggesting musicians can purchase a seat at reduced cost. This has been the case for as long as musicians traveled by air. Putting a Strad or Guanari (eg) in the cargo hold is not an option to be entertained.

The real question is rules about hand luggage. Which may have been tightened.
30 years ago I was not allowed to carry a briefcase on as hand luggage because it didn't fit their "standard" recess. As it had a small CPM laptop I was concerned. But when you are trying to board you don't have any room for manoeuvre (English spelling).

When this happened to us on business trips, the airline had no objection to putting the laptop an a carrier bag and taking it on board as hand luggage whilst the cases went in the hold, no laptops were damaged in this manoeuvre. Not quite the same as a guitar or other large expensive item though.

When I flew from Teesside to Amsterdam by KLM a couple of years ago, they let me take a ukulele and an overnight bag as carry on. That was short haul and it seems KLM have decided checking in baggage for short flights is just resulting in wasted time. Long haul may well be different and it's a few years since I've made a long haul flight.

This seems to be a non-issue. The linked article says, "A BA spokesman said: 'We will always do everything we can to accommodate smaller musical instruments in the cabin.

'In order to ensure there is enough space for all customers to store their belongings, larger instruments, such as guitars and cellos, can be carried in the hold."

The article is an excuse to show a CEO looking furtive and two women in various tight dresses. One shows a trumpeter with her dress about to fall off. That's what it's really about.

I took an acoustic guitar on board an transatlantic airline a few years ago. Never had any problems.
