Liverpool 3 AC Milan 2. Champions League. If you didn't see this game, that's your severe bad luck. It was the fastest, most scintillating, most see-saw, most amazing game ever. Absolutely how the game should be played. Naturally, as a Liverpool fan I'm over the moon, 'arry. Especially as El Capitan, Jordan Henderson, scored a screamer to win the game. One wag posting in the Guardian comments column called the goal a thunderbastard. Very appropriate, and I have a new word in my lexicon!

This coming Saturday, the 11th, will see the final of the All Ireland Gaelic Football cup between Mayo and Tyrone. The winners will receive the magnificent Sam McGuire cup and will have the coveted ttile of All Ireland winners.

Mayo have not won the cup since 1951 as on the return journey after winning the cup they were "cursed" by a priest (or a woman) for disrespecting a funeral taking place in the town of Foxford. The "curse" was that Mayo would never win another All Ireland title whilst any of the team member remained alive. There is just one survivor of that team, a man now aged 94.

Mayo in the past 70 years have reached the final on 10 occasions and on 10 occasions have been beaten somethimes by a single point.

If you can I would suggest you watch the match which starts at 5pm local time. It can be seen on RTE sports and SkySports Arena I am confident you will not be dissappointed.

I find it curious that things are just getting ready
for FIFA World Cup 2022, and at the same time,

the United States is courting FIFA regarding the
World Cup 2026 -- I think I got that right --
part of which is to happen in the US.
Just read a story about the city of Nashville, Tennessee.

Nashville dearly wants to help host
the US portion of the 2026 World Cup.
So there is a 2022 World Cup qualifier match for the USMNT
this coming Sunday, it's in Nashville,
(US vs. Canada if I understand rightly)
and Nashville is going to try to persuade FIFA to
let them host part of 2026.

6-0 is nice but I'm not really sure what we can read into the Carabao cup win, Sen. Norwich had 10 changes from the side that lost 6-0 to Man City but I don't know (and am ignorant about) how many of them are likely to get selected for a Premiership game.

It never(to me) seems to be a high priority trophy for the bigger clubs. I did get to Wembley to see Norwich lose to Villa 1975 when it was the League Cup.

Just maybe, you could take some hope from the Leicester game. I caught a bit of game updates on the BBC thing dad watches (or can be glued to...) and I read the BBC match report. My impression was Norwich played quite well and didn't "deserve" to loose.

But that's how things go. Maybe better to follow, I don't know but having Liverpool, Man C and Leicester in your first few games isn't the easiest of starts.

There have been different versions of this comment over the years. Skillful and/or foreign players would not cope on a cold wet and windy night at Turf Moor or Plough Lane etc.

Players tend to get less time on the ball before a challenge comes in. Some players struggle with that when they first arrive. The play can also be more physical here too.

Yesterday I watched the scintillating All Ireland Hurling final between Cork and Limerick.

Limerick ran out winners by a score of 3-32 to 1-22.

There where more points scored in that one match of 70 minutes than the entire matches of the Premiership and Championship football matches combined played over a total of 1800 minutes.

It really is a far better spectator spectacle.

Whilst a Liverpool follower (I like that, actually), I've always had a soft spot for Spurs. I think they have a very decent squad and on Sunday they seemed to have responded with great enthusiasm to their new manager, Nuno. You could almost say they were better without Kane. Son is brilliant and Lucas Moura is grievously underestimated. Messi stayed at Barca not only in their glory days but through their long decline in recent years. "Just get the ball to Messi" was a tactic that went on for years latterly and it didn't work. "Just get the ball to Harry" won't work either. He's 28, he lacks pace and he has glass ankles (as well as too much ego for a supposed team player). I think he's past his best. Daniel should ask for 200 million and make suckers out of Citeh. Harry won't make them better.

Not many are these days, if we are talking about players who stay with one club throughout their career. Liverpool have bought a number of players over the years.

I am a Spurs supporter (or rather a follower as someone called me. They have not had much of my money over the years). I would prefer Kane to stay but it does not surprise me that he might want to move. A football career is short and the number of prizes are small. No surprise that he wants a chance to win some.

Spurs might be a top club financially but not when it comes to winning things. Over the years they have always lost their better players to 'bigger' or better clubs. It is the nature of the beast.

We shall see what we shall see. Good win on Saturday but it is s long season. On another day, City will probably not spurn so many chances.

I think that his recent behaviour has been petulant and selfish. Instead of being so desperate to get to a club "where he can win trophies," he should be doing his damnedest to get Spurs to the top. They have a great new manager after a poor season under Mourinho but it is very recent that Spurs were in the top four twice, in a League Cup final and a Champions League final. He formed a great goal-scoring relationship with Son, but in his selfish quest for personal glory in a team game he seems to have overlooked that he's failed to win anything with Spurs in spite of his lionisation. He's no Messi, that's for sure.

His Grandfather hails from very close to where we are and there he is held in very high regard.

Rumour has it he has bought some land with a view to be building a house there at some point.

The Gaelic game is highly skilled, very tactical, played hard and mainly fair, there are few cynical offences and at a very high tempo.

Well it's great to see goals, but football is also about trying to prevent goals. Allison's spectacular double save in the Norwich-Liverpool match was as exciting to watch as any goal. Dour 0-0 draws can be tedious, but I've seen some great 1-0 games in my time.

I started this thread 3 years ago to suggest that Hurling and Gaelic football were more entertaining than the UK variety of football.

Yesterday I watched the highlights of the engliash Premiership and saw 25 goals in total from 7 matches. I also watched the semi-final of the Gaelic football competition which after the 70 minute playing period was 0-13 to 0-13. It then went to extra time another 20 minutes when the final score was Dublin 0-14 to Mayo 0-17.

So in the one match the scores were more than the whole of the premiership matches.

Quite a few people on our street have hoisted the Norwich City FC flag on their poles. Husband reckons Norwich have a chance. At least Teemu Pukki the Finn, our striker, is playing.
He wore everything he possesses of the club's colours on our visit to Morrisons in Fakenham. And did his usual "Come on yew Yellows!" like a well-trained parrot while pushing our trolley around the aisles.
We shall see.

Our Norwich City FC team have had to cancel a friendly match against Sheffield because some have tested positive for Covid. Our big game (against Liverpool) is on 14th August. Husband says Liverpool will 'eat them alive'. It might not take place if players still test positive.

Just read journalistic accounts of the game mentioned in the previous post.

One of those funny games that could have swung either way,
it sounds like.
Qatar's team, while a newer entity, looked promising going in.
The USMNT team, however, outlasted them and, I believe, wore them down.
The game sounds rather ugly, with only one goal scored and an awful lot of effort to prevent further goals from being scored.

Anyway, the USMNT team has won that game and now comes
a truly emotional meeting:
USA versus Mexico, they have been fierce rivals for some time.

I think you're right Jon. My sister says it's fitness that matters, not size. I feel a bit guilty now for 'fat-shaming'! It's just that in all the places in West Africa I've visited, I never once saw anyone obese. Strong, active and rather thin, but never too plump.
Husband has been mincing around in Fakenham Morrisons today in his new top. Had lots of cheery comments and compliments.

Sen, I believe John Hartson had weight problems in his few games for NCFC.

Cricket comes to mind for other sportsmen. A bit before my time but Colin Milburn had quite a frame, and apparently was (as well as being an excellent batsman) a surprisingly agile fielder.

There is some dispute over who sang it first with rival claims but I think Liverpool probably have the best claim. They were singing it on the terraces there shortly after Gerry & The Pacemakers released it in late 63 early 64. Celtic were also singing it from a very early date though. I spoke to one Liverpudlian years ago who said he went to the second leg of the European Cup Winners Cup semi final in 1966. Liverpool had lost the first leg in Glasgow and when he got into Anfield he was astonished to see it packed full with Celtic fans all singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" so they were apparently already singing it by the mid 60s too. Norwich City FC's new season football strip has been put on sale, and husband (of course!) ordered one. He was dancing about this morning because it will arrive today by Royal Mail.
We saw a chap in Tesco wearing the same shirt, but he was extremely obese and we reckoned it must have been size XXXL. It came down to his knees, and you could have camped out under it! Husband is size M.
