Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 21 Dec 21 - 09:06 PM Friendly doesn't mean uncompetitive. It means a game that's for teams to limber up and get some playing time in, with no particular trophy to play for. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: keberoxu Date: 21 Dec 21 - 08:50 PM The USMNT took on Bosnia in one of those games that are described as 'friendly'. It didn't sound friendly to me in the description: one American player, Kelly Acosta if memory serves, was so aggressively toppled over from behind that the Bosnian in question was red-carded. If that was a friendly game, then ... ? |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 21 Nov 21 - 07:34 PM Well here's a heartwarming and inspirational football story. Just about a year ago, the Mexican footballer Raúl Jiménez, who played as Wolves' star striker, was so badly injured after a collision of heads that it seemed he would die. There's a lovely 30-minute documentary on the Beeb that follows his route to recovery from that awful incident. It's taken many months for his rehabilitation, but as from the start of this season he's fully recovered and is, by now, back to his menacing best for Wolves (he scored an amazing goal yesterday) and is going from strength to strength. He's a lovely, smiley man with a lovely family, all featured in the programme, as is his erstwhile Wolves manager, Nuno Espiritosanto, another wonderful human being. I thought it was a great watch. It's called Code Red and it's on iPlayer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: keberoxu Date: 10 Nov 21 - 07:04 PM This journalist article about an upcoming match in the CONCACAF/World Cup qualifiers, between the United States and Mexico, is complicated and fascinating to me. The lengths to which the United States will go to keep the Mexico team's fans from overwhelming a game in the United States ... Making a home game an actual home game |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 25 Oct 21 - 07:19 AM You are quite correct Steve, I have seldom seen United so outplayed. Liverpool, I have to admit, were clinical and superb. |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 24 Oct 21 - 03:38 PM I've posted this on another thread (the pet peeves job), but it definitely belongs here too. Liverpool had just slaughtered Man Ure 5-0 at Old Trafford this afternoon (sorry, Raggytash, this isn't intended as a gloat, though, naturally, I'm lying...). This is what I posted: Following on from that, at the end of the match the BBC radio commentator said "In the first half, United had their trousers pulled down by Liverpool. In the second half, they just toyed with 'em..." The mind truly doth boggle! |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Senoufou Date: 23 Oct 21 - 02:59 PM Oh crumbs oh crumbs!!! Norwich were beaten by Chelsea today 7 -0 !! A complete massacre! We'll be going back down at the end of the season. |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 21 Oct 21 - 07:18 AM I'm no fan of Man Ure, but I must say that the second half of the match against Atalanta was bloody brilliant from them - great fightback, great game to watch! |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 19 Oct 21 - 07:59 PM Yet another scintillating, thrilling game, Atletico Madrid v. Liverpool in the Champions League. We won dirty, as they say, in a tight and open game. Edge of seat, which is how I like it. Atleti, as expected, play-acted their way through the match and their manager Diego Simeone did his primadonna bit on the touchline as ever. So we top the group, max points, and two more goals for Mo. Brilliant! |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 16 Oct 21 - 10:18 AM "The icing on the cake was Mo Salah's goal. You won't see a better one this season." I lied. Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Senoufou Date: 04 Oct 21 - 03:19 PM I've been hearing about Sadio Mané (Senegalese player for Liverpool) from my husband. He earns vast sums of money, yet contributes a lot for charity. He has built a hospital near his home village in Senegal (a country I know quite well) and donates sums to all sorts of worthy causes. Isn't that lovely? (whisper: He's also extremely dishy too!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: keberoxu Date: 03 Oct 21 - 08:30 PM In Massachusetts, USA, I have been watching owner Robert Kraft, of New England Patriots pigskin-football fame, nurture his investment in the New England Revolution FC, presently based in Gillette Stadium. I knew Mr. Kraft played a long game, but this journalism article gives me a better idea of HOW long a game -- 1989, some 32 years ago. Between Kraft and coach Bruce Arena, this football club is trying for a breakthrough, but I'm in no position to tell how many years it might take. they call it the 'crayon flag': 29 June 2021 |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 03 Oct 21 - 06:13 PM A stellar football match at Anfield. A draw, but who cares. Pep and Jurgen have a huge amount of respect for each other. The second half especially was a footballing spectacle you will rarely see. The icing on the cake was Mo Salah's goal. You won't see a better one this season. What I love is that these guys are producing the kind of football that football fans love. No parking of the bus, no defensive negativity. Brilliant stuff. I really miss Mike's input to this thread. I've PMd him but got no response. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 30 Sep 21 - 05:41 AM Dig this piece of writing from Barney Ronay in the Guardian about last night's match: At moments like these Chelsea seem to have a wealth of everything, and somehow not quite enough of some things: a brilliantly powerful squad that still has the sense somehow of too much hole and not enough doughnut. "Too much hole and not enough doughnut." God, I love that! I've used it four times this morning already (once about Keir Starmer...) |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 29 Sep 21 - 06:07 PM Tuff titty, Chelski! They were mugged by a canny Juve team (I watched the match). Juventus always seemed to have nine or ten men behind the ball, shades of Mourinho when he was at the helm at Chelsea. I still expect Chelsea to get through from the group they're in. They should smash Juve at the Bridge (which I lived literally next door to for two years in the early 70s, where I first met the eventually-to-be Mrs Steve in 1974). I see that Man U scraped a victory. Actually, I'm a massive admirer of Cristiano, and I treasure a photo of Mrs Steve standing next to his statue in Funchal, Madeira, the place of his upbringing. Just down from that statue is a coffee bar that sells the best bloody pastel de nata on the planet. Yes!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Sep 21 - 05:49 PM Sir Roger headed the rebound from Geoff Hurst's "controversial" goal-line goal in the World Cup Final over the bar. Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Senoufou Date: 24 Sep 21 - 03:53 AM I see that Arsene Wenger is proposing an 'inclusion' type of re-jig of FIFA. What began in 1992 as a controversial breakaway has become the most watched sporting competition in the world.I'm not a football fan (my wife is, she went to Old Trafford with her Dad as a girl) but I found it very interesting. How Murdoch's gamble in creating Sky TV paid off, and created football as a business rather than a sport. I've seen more of Cantona in films than on the pitch. Ken Loach's Looking for Eric is good. |
