Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Rain Dog Date: 23 Sep 22 - 03:05 PM Senoufou, how much does a Norwich football rattle cost these days? What does £1,841 buy you at the Norwich City club shop? "Liz Truss is facing questions over Foreign Office spending, including £1,841 at Norwich City's online shop during her time as foreign secretary. Labour's shadow attorney general Emily Thornberry queried the use of Foreign Office expense cards, up 45% on last year, in a letter to the department. She asked why officials had incurred a number of costs, including two payments to the then Premier League club. The Foreign Office has been approached for comment. The payments were made on two dates: £1,318 on 21 October and £523.50 on 21 March." |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: keberoxu Date: 06 Sep 22 - 07:49 PM Senoufou, your Norwich City Canaries have a ginger-haired American player who is being singled out in the reports on the team's victories. They are saying that this youngster may end up on the US Men's National Team for the FIFA World Cup this year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Senoufou Date: 05 Sep 22 - 03:21 AM Norwich City beat Coventry last Saturday, and now we're top, and if this continues we might go 'up' again at the end of the season. Husband proudly paraded in his Canaries strip in Morrisons at Riverside (beside Carrow Road football stadium) and so many people gave him the thumbs up. He kept calling out "Come on you Yellows!" to them in a strong French accent with a big grin. (We meet up every weekend to go shopping.) His entire family of brothers/cousins plus friends have been wearing their Norwich City strips in celebration in Abidjan! Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Rain Dog Date: 04 Sep 22 - 10:18 AM From the BBC The magic of the Cup As red cards go, they don't come any stranger - but sometimes nature calls. In what might be an FA Cup first, a goalkeeper was sent off for "urinating in a hedge" during a match. The keeper in question is Connor Maseko of Hampshire side Blackfield & Langley FC, who play in the ninth-tier Wessex League. The incident occurred in the 76th minute of their 0-0 draw with Somerset side Shepton Mallet FC in Saturday's FA Cup first qualifying round tie. "The ball went out for a goal kick," Blackfield & Langley FC co-manager Conor McCarthy told BBC Sport. "He needed to go to the toilet so he went up against a hedge and their players started shouting saying 'what's he doing?' to the ref. The ref went up to him and decided to send him off. "He (Maseko) protected himself. He was inside the hedge. Sometimes when you have to go you have to go. "I was gobsmacked. I didn't expect that [sending-off]. "We're all pretty shocked by the decision." At the time, a post on Shepton's Twitter account said: "Blackfield keeper is sent off for urinating in the hedge! Never seen it before." The game will be replayed and Blackfield tweeted: "See you Tuesday evening (hopefully get plenty of toilet breaks en route)." Shepton, tweeting about the the replay of 'urinate gate', added: "After an unusual red card in the first tie (possibly a first), we are looking for a match sponsor. Plumbers or portaloo companies, take advantage!" |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: G-Force Date: 09 Aug 22 - 09:13 AM Ah! I can well remember as a small child taking down the scores off the radio so that my dad could check his football pools later. Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Rain Dog Date: 09 Aug 22 - 07:49 AM They think it's all over. It is now. The Guardian: BBC ditches classified football results on Radio 5 live "The BBC has marked the end of an era by discontinuing its classified football results service on 5 live, ending a British radio institution that has been broadcast since the 1950s. The decision to drop the longrunning feature – in which all major English and Scottish matches were given equal treatment, often with a distinctive intonation – has led to suggestions that the BBC is prioritising Premier League football over the lower leagues." I did notice this on Saturday while listening to BBC Radio5L. What is the world coming to hey? |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 30 Jul 22 - 07:30 PM Great footie weekend! First, and delectably, Liverpool showed Man City how to perform superbly with well-integrated new players. Darwin Nunez came on as a sub and was devastating. On the other hand, the much-vaunted Haaland for Citeh was anonymous for the whole game and missed an absolute sitter. And tomorrow we have the womens' Euro final. Woohoo! |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: G-Force Date: 22 Jul 22 - 04:58 AM I've been watching the England games too (God, my wife thinks I'm sad!). Yes Spain were good, but I was disappointed by their ready recourse to the 'dark arts', taking advantage of lenient refereeing to commit gratuitous fouls, cutting out potential attacks and generally breaking up play. (Something the Brazil men's team are very good at.) The other games I've seen have been reasonably free of that sort of stuff. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 21 Jul 22 - 07:54 PM Along with nine million others, I watched the Euro '22 quarter-final between England and Spain. It was a wonderful match with both teams revealing strengths and weaknesses. Overall, Spain were unlucky to lose, I thought, and it was sad to see them eliminated. They were a far better watch than the English team. I shall definitely be watching the semi-final and final. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 17 May 22 - 08:37 PM That reminds me of that Italian food website, Vincenzo's Plate. You can buy a t-shirt from him that sez "no cream in carbonara" and another that sez "no pineapple on pizza!" Anyways, we beat the Saints tonight even with a second-string team, which means that the Premier League goes down to the wire on Sunday afternoon. Liverpool beat Wolves and Manky Citeh only manage a draw (or lose), and the title is ours. What a comeback after being 14 points down in January. Let it be! |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 15 May 22 - 05:52 AM I did, with the help of a bottle-plus of the Morrisons Collapso (currently seven quid, Dave). The whole shebang added up to the sort of marathon telly-watch that I'm not used to. But hey, two things to take from the evening: we won the bloody cup, and I hate Graham f****** Norton more than ever (see Eurovision thread upstairs...) We have a new legend, the Greek scouser, Kostas Tsimikas! His name will live forever, along with Bill Shankly (aka God), Sir Kenny, Roger Hunt, Ian Rush, Stevie G, Mo and Divock Origi! |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Senoufou Date: 15 May 22 - 01:33 AM I thought of you Steve when they lifted up the Cup one after the other. I imagined you doing a little dance of joy. It was a very hard, closely run game, and I never like it when it ends with penalty kicks - a bit too random. But it was indeed a cliffhanger and very entertaining. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 14 May 22 - 05:02 PM Well that was a gritty game, not a classic by any means, but plenty seat of pants stuff. It was a pity that someone had to lose. Both teams have played sixty-plus matches this season and, well, the energy levels nosedived as the game went on. But when the guys get tired and start to make mistakes, the entertainment increases! Almost literally gladiatorial! I think both sides have done the FA Cup a massive favour. It's been a bit of a Cinderella for a few years but I think they've resurrected it today. But sod all that. Liverpool won it and I'm over the moon, 'arry! |
