This coming Saturday, the 11th, will see the final of the All Ireland Gaelic Football cup between Mayo and Tyrone. The winners will receive the magnificent Sam McGuire cup and will have the coveted ttile of All Ireland winners.

Mayo have not won the cup since 1951 as on the return journey after winning the cup they were "cursed" by a priest (or a woman) for disrespecting a funeral taking place in the town of Foxford. The "curse" was that Mayo would never win another All Ireland title whilst any of the team member remained alive. There is just one survivor of that team, a man now aged 94.

Mayo in the past 70 years have reached the final on 10 occasions and on 10 occasions have been beaten somethimes by a single point.

If you can I would suggest you watch the match which starts at 5pm local time. It can be seen on RTE sports and SkySports Arena I am confident you will not be dissappointed.

Liverpool 3 AC Milan 2. Champions League. If you didn't see this game, that's your severe bad luck. It was the fastest, most scintillating, most see-saw, most amazing game ever. Absolutely how the game should be played. Naturally, as a Liverpool fan I'm over the moon, 'arry. Especially as El Capitan, Jordan Henderson, scored a screamer to win the game. One wag posting in the Guardian comments column called the goal a thunderbastard. Very appropriate, and I have a new word in my lexicon! :-)

Just watched 'The Keeper', a biopic about Bert Trautmann which was on the box recently. Lovely film about a good and talented man, whilst not quite the perfect saint he's sometimes portrayed as.

I'm not a football fan (my wife is, she went to Old Trafford with her Dad as a girl) but I found it very interesting. How Murdoch's gamble in creating Sky TV paid off, and created football as a business rather than a sport.

I've seen more of Cantona in films than on the pitch. Ken Loach's Looking for Eric is good.

I see that Arsene Wenger is proposing an 'inclusion' type of re-jig of FIFA. He wants as many countries as possible to be included in FIFA tournaments. But some say this will dilute the standard of football, and have a damaging effect. I'm not sure what to think. Any ideas?

Liverpool DID do Sir Roger proud, beating Porto 5-1 in Portugal. The icing on the cake is that PSG beat Man Citeh, with Messi scoring a blinder. What's not to like!

Sir Roger headed the rebound from Geoff Hurst's "controversial" goal-line goal in the World Cup Final over the bar. He could have headed it into the net instead, but Roger KNEW that the ball had crossed the line and felt he didn't need to. What class! What honesty! What a man!   What a Liverpool legend!

Not so Steve, I suspect I have a view (loyalty) that goes Lancashire (and in the case of football Manchester Utd, then city)first, northern second, English third, British fourth, European fifth.

As yet we haven't had to play at any interplanetary games so World has not entered into the equation!!

Tuff titty, Chelski! They were mugged by a canny Juve team (I watched the match). Juventus always seemed to have nine or ten men behind the ball, shades of Mourinho when he was at the helm at Chelsea. I still expect Chelsea to get through from the group they're in. They should smash Juve at the Bridge (which I lived literally next door to for two years in the early 70s, where I first met the eventually-to-be Mrs Steve in 1974). I see that Man U scraped a victory. Actually, I'm a massive admirer of Cristiano, and I treasure a photo of Mrs Steve standing next to his statue in Funchal, Madeira, the place of his upbringing. Just down from that statue is a coffee bar that sells the best bloody pastel de nata on the planet. Yes!!

A stellar football match at Anfield. A draw, but who cares. Pep and Jurgen have a huge amount of respect for each other. The second half especially was a footballing spectacle you will rarely see. The icing on the cake was Mo Salah's goal. You won't see a better one this season. What I love is that these guys are producing the kind of football that football fans love. No parking of the bus, no defensive negativity. Brilliant stuff.

I really miss Mike's input to this thread. I've PMd him but got no response.

I knew Mr. Kraft played a long game, but this journalism article

I've been hearing about Sadio Mané (Senegalese player for Liverpool) from my husband. He earns vast sums of money, yet contributes a lot for charity. He has built a hospital near his home village in Senegal (a country I know quite well) and donates sums to all sorts of worthy causes.

Yet another scintillating, thrilling game, Atletico Madrid v. Liverpool in the Champions League. We won dirty, as they say, in a tight and open game. Edge of seat, which is how I like it. Atleti, as expected, play-acted their way through the match and their manager Diego Simeone did his primadonna bit on the touchline as ever. So we top the group, max points, and two more goals for Mo. Brilliant!
