At 0800, AKA 8:00 AM local time this morning, Friday 13 January, residents in Hawaii received on their cell phones the following message: ?BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL."
Needless to say, this was a foul-up. Probably those not driven immediately to panic noticed that no other media were releasing similar messages, and the cell-phone message was rescinded within fifteen minutes. But this was fifteen minutes too long. I'm waiting with interest to observe the fall-out of this major malfunction and if anyone will be held responsible.

Apparently during a shift change someone pushed the wrong button. There seems to be considerable fallout in Hawai'i now.

wakes 'em up.. keeps 'em on their toes.. job well done.. duck and cover...

Even if it was caused by a massive oops.. it's a more realistic drill than being told when to expect one...

Maybe enough surfers shit their speedos to question the sanity of nuclear arsenals...

I'd have been absolutely terrified and panic-stricken. There's nowhere in our vicinity that would protect us from a nuclear strike. One would tearfully be saying goodbye to one's family, frantically trying to contact those at work or school - horrendous.

So one person acting in isolation can trigger a nuclear alert? Am I missing something here?
Are we being fed a bunch of porkies?
No doubt in about 30 years we will know the truth.

An aborted false flag?

"The mistake occurred during a shift-change drill that takes place three times a day at the emergency command post, according to Richard Rapoza, a spokesman for the agency.

“Someone clicked the wrong thing on the computer,” he said."

and it took 15 minutes to rescind the order? Yeah, Yeah, yeah!

to question the sanity of nuclear arsenals...

Or of allowing NK to get one.

Keith - read, actually read, what I said...

the clue is in the "s" at the end of "arsenals"...

It'd be a damn shame if Hawaii
went the same way as Puerto Rico
Is anybody out there. Anyone at all
They used to be Americans
Now they're no one at all.

remember the days of:

this is only a test,
if this were not a test,
you would receive specific instructions ...

right.

"Or of allowing NK to get one."
Once world governments start thinking like this we'd better start building nuclear shelters
With a head-bnger like Trump's finger on the button, any other finger has to be a deterrent
The U.S. is the only nation to have ever used this shit on civilians
The argument should be that nobody should have that right, not that it should be exclusive to one nation

It actually took over 30 minutes for State officials to send out a correction. They knew a mistake had been made in 3 minutes but it took another 30 minutes to load the command to rescind the alarm and send it out.

Heads are rolling, along with the eyes...

Apparently State officials had to get permission from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to cancel the alert, and that took about 25 minutes. The FCC says that Hawai'i has/had no system of checking that the alert was real or of quickly canceling it besides what they did -- alert people via Twitter, etc.

Heads rolling? I kinda suspect heads displayed on bridges and gates!

I guess I am the only person to remember that on 9-11 the Emergency Broadcast System did not issue any alerts of any kind anywhere.

Pfr,
the clue is in the "s" at the end of "arsenals"...

I did read that thank you, but it is NK.s arsenal that has been striking terror into US Pacific teritories in recent months, not any other.

Keith - "striking terror " it's a bit early in the morning for such pulp fiction hyperbole, but...

aint it a nuclear missiles purpose in life to strike terror...!!!???

every single one of 'em, all of 'em, no matter which nation owns and is prepared to deploy them...!!!???

My generation, who were teens in the late 1970s, and in our 20s in the 1980s,
lived under such a perpetual state of real tension and palpable fear of USA v USSR nuclear annihilation...
Living day to day studying for degrees, trying to start our adult lives and careers in a milieu of such threat and hopeless despair.

So much so, that many of us made conscious decisions not to start families,
to ever have babies brought into a world of such uncertainty and increasingly impending world destruction.

Times fortunately seemed to change for the better.. but I never had any kids..
The damage to our mental states ran too deep.
Same as many of my friends & contemporaries, remaining childlesss for life.

So Keith, your over melodramatic buffoonery is wasted on folks of my age and back history.....

I wondered about Rap's spelling of "Hawai'i".
I was going to query it, but looked it up first: Hawaii or Hawai'i

Good job I didn't just jump straight in.

Does anyone remember those Public Advice pamphlets and films of the late 1970's called 'Protect and Survive'? One can still see them on Youtube. In fact, I doubt whether it would be possible to survive a major nuclear attack, and actually I think I'd rather vapourise in the initial explosion. Having watched some of the horrifying footage of Hiroshima etc. one would prefer to die instantly I reckon.

PFR, I also lived though those traumas of the Cold War.
The Cold War is over but the threat of nuclear destruction returned last year for Japan and US territories in the Pacific.
The threat is from NK. Perhaps you missed all that?

Keith - the cold war is over.. welcome to the lukewarm war...???

How much older you are than me I do not know, but my generation were the babies and children of the cold war.
It shaped what we became as adults.
It's influence on our growth and psycological development greatly determined / stunted our personal hopes, apirations, and peronalities....

seeing as you like links...

The Trump administration?s nuclear policy review loosens constraints on the use

First, I am glad it was a false alarm.
Second, anyone with an ounce of brains is now following up to find out what to do in the event of a real emergency.
The more civic minded of them are signing up to join their CERT teams. In the US, CERT is the current name of Civil Defense. Contact your local Office of Emergency Management, either State or County.

"The threat is from NK. Perhaps you missed all that?"
The nuclear clock has remained withing minutes of midnight for many decades
Missed that
midless thi=ugs like Trump have brought it even nearer meltdiown in a matter of little more than a year
For someone who is overfond of defending atrocities by pointing out the crimes of others you have remained remarkably silent on the fact that, at this very minute the greatest threat to world peace is the misogynistic, belligerent racist thug in The White House
This is made more disgusting because of the fact that our own elected leaders have crawled up this monster's arse on our behalf
To ignore him is to defend him and his British acolytes

To add to the unhappiness, last night "60 Minutes" aired a segment where a nuclear expert described multiple trips to North Korea over the past 14 years in which scientific officials were at pains to assure him of the validity and extent of their nuclear weapons progress. Answered a few questions for me along with the probability that they are now a nuclear state.
This morning I heard that the inbound missile alert button-pusher had been 'reassigned'. I hope and expect that the reaction will go far beyond and above that minimal reaction.
