Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: keberoxu Date: 30 Nov 25 - 07:31 PM The Gritter Tracker link shows that the snowploughs are busy. Here in New England the snowplows will be busy on Tuesday this week. |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: keberoxu Date: 25 Nov 25 - 10:44 AM There's a lot of groaners on that list, and some clever ones, too. Sweet Child O' Brine made me laugh. |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: Jack Campin Date: 25 Nov 25 - 02:08 AM From Lindsay Kinsella on Facebook: There is a tradition in Scotland to name our grit trucks every year. Officially. By the actual Scottish government. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: Jack Campin Date: 23 Nov 25 - 06:22 AM I live a few minutes walk from a gritter depot in southern Scotland. Haven't seen one yet but my wife is an enthusiastic gritter spotter and it can't be long. Most snow in Scotland right now is above any road. The Edinburgh trams were halted by flooding in Princes Street this morning. Does anybody name pump trucks? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: keberoxu Date: 22 Nov 25 - 07:10 PM Our snowplows/gritters don't have names, but I love them anyway. I moved two towns over, so the weather is much the same. We expect snow sooner or later in the coming weeks. |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Nov 25 - 09:08 AM Time again to start thinking about snowplows. Not here in Texas, all they have are sand trucks and trucks with multi-spigotted sprayers to apply a salty chemical on roadways. Charmion moved this year - are you in an area that needs as many snowplows? Is there less lake effect snow in Ottawa? Keberoxu also moved, but is (I believe) in the same town. Do you have snowplows? |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: MaJoC the Filk Date: 19 Sep 25 - 06:03 AM It's a bit early for snow, but this seems the least inappropriate existing thread: The most dreaded four words for an English train commuter to hear are "leaves on the line"; so every autumn, the rail companies send out special trains which remove the compacted leaves with high-pressure water jets, lest said leaves cause train wheels to lose traction when the brakes go on. According to BBC Red Button, there's been a competition for naming the newest leaf-removing vehicle. Runners-up included Leaf-Fall Weapon, Pulp Friction and The Autumn Avenger; the winner was the magnificent Ctrl Alt Deleaf. |

Didn’t get five minutes down the road when I got knocked down by a smowplough They should name a snowplough Tommy Cooper |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: MaJoC the Filk Date: 06 Dec 24 - 11:34 AM Methinks it's because there's a massive job lot of wool they can't yarn-bomb anywyere with in this weather. |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: Tattie Bogle Date: 05 Dec 24 - 07:43 PM Just seen on Facebook that one has been given a massive woolly jumper (sweater) provided by an army of local knitters and crocheters! Can’t remember offhand quite where that was or what the plough’s name is, but quite a labour of love! |

Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: keberoxu Date: 24 Feb 24 - 10:33 AM How right you are about the potholes. The nearest large city to where I am staying, is infamous for two things: the lack of salt to melt the ice on the roads in winter, and the potholes that form when the temperatures get warmer. Love the pothole-relevant names as well. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: on the naming of Snowploughs From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Feb 24 - 05:07 AM I should think most of them are hibernating, apart from a few in the Highlands and NorthEast, as it has been almost a “no snow” winter so far for us. One morning when about an inch of the white stuff fell, but was gone by lunchtime. But every week since November there have been headlines such as “600 mile snowbomb to hit UK” or “Forecasters predict exact date snow will arrive in Edinburgh”………but nothing! The lack of snow has meant that they have been able to complete a proper resurface of a half mile section of main road near us, after its potholes shredded hundreds of tyres: took 4 weeks, working through the nights too, so here’s some names for resurfacing machinery.
