Subject: Lyr Req: Hindle Wakes - Live at the Cross Keys
From: GUEST,Ian Hendrie

I'm seeking a recording and/or words to a song entitled 'Manchester Ship Canal'. This one was written by John Gill and is the third track on the 1978 album "Hindle Wakes - Live at the Cross Keys". John Gill was a member of Hindle Wakes.

There is a copy of the lp on sale but £35 seems rather too much to spend to find the words and tune of one song (for the Songs of the Inland Waterways website).

There is another thread about THE MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL and a set of lyrics have been posted here. Are they the ones you want?

No, I'm afraid not. Reading from an on-line cover image of aforementioned lp the song I'm seeking is an original by John Gill.

Chorus:

Manchester Ship Canal’s coming
Prosperity
Manchester Ship Canal’s coming
At Last

From Ireland imported, the Navvies were brought.
Seven Years of hard labour to stand.
For a ditch 26 feet by 35 miles
Dug with shovels, picks and bare hands

Chorus

Queen Victoria came along on May the 21st
A 21 gun salute for to hear
Mr Marshall the Lord Mayor and now Sir Anthony
And likewise the chief engineer

Chorus

For an outlay of 56 million pounds we’ll have
Streets so full you can’t move
Health and wealth will come to all as long as it lasts
And likewise to the city we love.

Chorus

No longer will our children go barefoot around
Walking many’s a mile
We’ll go on up to Blackpool and have us a good time
Our first holiday in many’s a while

Chorus

Manchester Ship Canal’s coming
Prosperity
Manchester Ship Canal’s coming
At Last
At Last

Thanks Harry but I already had the text from a copy of the CD. Sorry I didn't update this thread.
