Not quite Effsee--four fifths of the road between Perth and Dundee {ie} between St Madoes and Dundee, the part known as The Carse of Gowrie and shown on the maps as such, runs North East.

Another Gowrie Conspiracy perhaps?

Ah Gutcher, but there's the nub! The Carse o' Gowrie is due east of Perth 'til near Dundee!

The Carse of Gowrie is in Perthshire, which is not North East Scotland.
I think you could be right with "The Lass Of Gowrie" being the tune sought. I did find this by "Googling" "Kate of Gowrie" :

"The Regimental Quick March of the 70th Regiment of Foot, a Regiment which in 1881 became the 2nd Battalion The East Surrey Regiment. The song was founded on an older ballad by William Reid of Glasgow, called 'Kate O'Gowrie'. The melody was known as 'Loch Eroch Side' and was taken from 'O'er Young to Marry Yet' in 1757. The actual song, 'The Lass O'Gowrie' was written by the once famous poetess and songwriter, Lady Carolina Nairne.

I suspect that "The Lass O Gowrie", to a good going tune, is the one being sought here.

Gowrie, or The Carse of Gowrie is in the Mearns, North East Scotland.

The song Coleraine Regatta was written by a blind fiddle player named James McCurry (see thread for Coleraine Regatta)
A tune is mentioned in the words of the song - a fife and drum tune called "Kate frae Gowrie". I wonder if anybody knows how it goes??
