A good first weekend of this annual competition.

Wales 34 - Scotland 7
France 13 - Ireland 15
Italy 15 - England 46

Two clear-cut wins, and Ireland scrape home in the dying minutes of the game.

Next weekend sees
Ireland v Italy
England v Wales
Scotland v France.

Look forward to this every year. Played it myself many years ago but nowhere near 'England' standard. Just love to watch the competition and the memories live on in me. My highest level... played for county police team.

Hi

I watched the games at the week-end.

There was ( tom ) a surprise as the Scottish team was overwhelmed by a supposed weakened Wales.

Ireland France was very close and either team could have won.

England beat Italy as expected but I think that the score was a little unflattering ti Italy . For three quarters of the game they were giving England a tough time.

I used to play to a good standard many years ago. In that time the game has changed dramatically. I heard references during these games about new changes to the laws. I was not quite sure what they were. But that is no surprise in my 40 years playing I did not really know what the laws were. I just used to pay to the referees.

Good to watch though.

I think the games to come are going to be close with England probably being slight favorites....but keep your eyes on Ireland.

Cheers

MikeL2

England didn't live up to the pundits expectations against Italy.
Scotland's expected resurgence didn't happen against Wales (or Wales were better than the pundits thought).
Wales away to England next week could be a turning point.

Wales probably have their two hardest games as away fixtures, but have the benefit of playing 3 at home and only 2 away.

I watched the France V Ireland game in my local out here on the Connemara. There was one French couple in the bar with big smiles on their faces till that drop goal then the place erupted !!!

Diabolical for us here in Embra! Could it really be the same team that so nearly beat the All Blacks in November??
But well done, Ireland: keeps 2 chappies in our family happy!

Hi

I watched all the games

England struggled to beat a Welsh side that troubled England towards the end. But for one amazing tackle they would have lost.

The Scotland France game was the best to watch. It swayed back and forth with Scotland deserving their close win.

Ireland had no problems with a poor Italian team.

Cheers

Mike

MikeL2
Yes, a fair summary of the weekend.
Although I feel that there were a couple of other things which could have reversed the England/Wales result (or, if I'm fair, have increased England's win)

Time for a weekend break now before the next series of matches

Cheers
Nigel

Hi Nigel

Thanks for your comments.

Yes there were ( for me anyway) a couple of decisions by the Referee that I didn't understand. And they could have gone either way.

But then I as have said previously I never fully understood all the laws in my playing days.

I felt, regardless of this England did just enough to scrape through.
I thought the Wales missed an opportunity to bring on their pacier players which they did towards the end, which created some panic in the England backs.

Cheers

Mike

Was at the Scotland v France match: a real nail-biter! Well done Greig Laidlaw for his mighty kicking!
View somewhat compromised by the new generation of official merchandise supporters' pompom hats worn by the 2 young ladies in front of us: something like a high-rise tea-cosy - ill-fitting their heads and pompom just at my eyelevel!
Roll on England!

Just getting ready to watch the Rugby.

It should be exciting.

The Scotland v England game will be close and as an Englishman I must pick them to win.

Cheers

Hi

Just finished watching the games. First Ireland beat Wales by a narrow margin. I think they just about deserved to win but Wales will be disappointed as their enterprising performance could not create a win against the strong and wily Irish.

Scotland beat England and their more open attacking game worried England. They deservedly won in a physically tough game for both sides.
I thought the referee was very fussy and slightly spoiled what could have been a more open game. Congratulations are due to a hard working Scottish team that won because they were more enterprising than a sluggish England.

This result throws the 6 Nations Championship wide open. On today's performance The Scots must fancy their chances. For England it's back to the drawing board

Cheers

Mike

Generous analysis as an England supporter, Mike! I was at the Murrayfield match, and delighted to see them win the Calcutta Cup after 10 years since the last time. There was probably more real excitement in their game against France 2 weeks ago, but perhaps more at stake with this one.
It will be a tough one in Dublin against Ireland on their home territory.

At this stage in the 6 nations..
My mrs [South Wales valley girl] is deflated,
but she doesn't mind too much losing to Ireland
as long as they go on to beat England on Wales's behalf...

Hi Tatty

" t will be a tough one in Dublin against Ireland on their home territory. "

I think you are right. The Irish are always hard to beat, especially at home.

I have played against Irish sides in my career. Always tricky to play against. They seem to be able to stop the opposing teams playing.

cheers

Mike

Well we have 2 of the males in our family who are from N Ireland, so someone will be happy whatever the result!
Always a brilliant atmosphere in Dublin too: will be looking for some good music while there.

Hi Tatty

I have some Irish connections to. My Grandmother on my father's side is from County Clare and I have a cousin who lives there.

Love Dublin but I can't get there this year for the England game. I have just had some surgery and when this settles I need to do for more. Nothing serious. I will be esconced in front of my TV.

But I will be contented whoever wins as long as it is a good game.

Cheers

Mike

Wales's matches are easier to remember. Each year we play either three matches at home, or three matches away. The three/two split is always France, Scotland, Italy / England, Ireland.
So whichever teams are home/away, the three teams in blue are always played in the same way.

Ah well, it wasn't to be three in a row for Scotland, but full credit to Ireland for becoming the new Six Nations Champions even before the remaining matches are played! The cheer that went up in Dublin late this afternoon was something to be heard!

Hi

Watched England v France and England were very poor. Lots of over kicking giving possession to the eager French. France deserved to win and England got what the deserved........nowt.

Congratulations to Ireland on winning the series.

my mrs will be Irish for the afternoon, promptly reverting back to her native Welsh at 5.00pm

Bacardi and coke chilling in the fridge ready for celebrating England's defeat,
and Wales's victory...

[that's her plan anyway...]

I'm going to stay upstairs setting up a guitar...

Complete turnabout (compared to the men's competition) for the women's results: France Grand Slam, England 2nd! Scotland totally wiped out by Italy!
