Subject: Joe Brown UK tour
From: Dave the Gnome

Went to see Joe in Ilkely last night. What a splendid concert. He is an exceptionally talented musician and the range of songs was phenomenal. Everything from comic songs to moving ballads and from rock and roll to country. It was an acoustic gig, without his band, but he was joined on stage by Henry Gross from Nashville who complimented the sound with his own special guitar style and wonderful harmonies.

If you get chance to see him at all I would recommend it.

Totally agree - Joe Brown - extremely underrated musician, artist and performer - from the old school, where you actually did have to be capable of performing - Joe Brown, Tommy Steele and Lonnie Donnegan

Forgot to mention his stories as well - The one involving a pair of boots from Johnny Cash was hilarious :-)

I saw him in Reading some years ago, with Dave Edmunds on the bill. Outstanding!

His version of "I'll See You in My Dreams" at The Concert for George inspired me to take up the uke.

I saw Joe twice in the early 60s with the "12 acts for 10 bob" tours that came to our local cinema*. His "Darktown Strutter's Ball" and "'enery the 8th" were part of my junior 45 collection. Years later I saw him with his group at Darlington Arts Centre. He was on great form and I'd go and see him again if he came to Scotland.

Billy Fury usually topped the bill.

Sorry FB - No dates north of the border this year :-(

He did mention Billy Fury and a few others last night. L was very pleased to see the statue of Billy last time I went to Liverpool. Both he and Joe were a little before my time but I don't think either have had the recognition they deserve.

Joe Brown, not just for his own talent and discography, is a very esteemed guitar player due to his Billy Fury and Eddie Cochran associations....

I've beeen into Billy Fury songs since I was an infant singing along to them on the radio in the early 60s.
But a more serious 'fan' since my late teens when there was a bit of a revival of his early raw Brit rock n roll amongst us young punk rockers...
.. and a more sophisticated appreciation of his big power ballads...

Saw him at All Saints Church Hall in Borehamwood around 1960 through the doors when somebody went in. We were outside on our bikes - too young to go in! Many great bands played in that hall - Screaming Lord Sutch & the Savages, Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, Nero & the Gladiators and the like.

Well, Joe's average all the way round, but has a very engaging personality.

He is a better than average entertainer. He also plays guitar and mandolin to a very high standard. I cannot comment in his uke playing as I have nothing to compare it to.

All subjective of course.
