I rented a Cort from Custy's Music Shop in Ennis last time I was in Ireland- it was a great thing for carrying around to the pubs!

I've played Yammies on and off for decades, but am very taken with their new scallop-braced 800 series - for c£300 you can get a very toneful beast, & they don't need anywhere near as much tweaking with the setup as used to be the case; I'd say they've really raised the bar with these models.

My son was bought a Cort for Christmas by his partner a few years ago. £100 or so - amazing quality for the price.

In many ways, there's no such thing as a bad guitar now. What with seasoning technology, laser cutting and better glues, selecting and standardising for mass production means a Yamaha or Epiphone brand new under ?100 can be fettled to give a good a play as many top end ones of yore.

My old Yamaha SJ180, bought new from CV Berry in Worksop in 1981 for ?80 is now back with me after twenty years with my son. Its all plywood and looks knackered but it often comes with me to folk clubs because it sounds clear with long sustain, great for open tunings. I play it at home, looking at my ?1500 Terry Pack SJRS and wonder why......

levins were great, but i couldn't afford one - they cost more than my dad made in a month.
you can buy a fantastic guitar for fifty quid these days. the levins cost about sixty quid in 1964.

Off topic, but just noticed a post on another site from a prominent concertina maker in the US:

"our models (34 in total; 6 hybrids and 28 with traditional reeds) ranging in price from $445 to $34100"

For $34100, I'd want a set of Alistair Anderson's fingers included in the price.

yes I remember the dark day of Harmony Sovereigns and Levins goliath, and shit Hoyers.

I think Eko's were about the first affordable playable. My first affordable playable was a Jedson, my wife bought me in '72 from Kays Catalogue. I got it for Christmas with Stefan Grossman's How to play Blues Guitar.

Dave Groome of Brandywine Bridge was the first pro I saw playing a Yamaha. I'd just started floorspotting and generally making a nuisance of myself.

The first Yamaha I bought was an FG, from Minns in Paris Street,
Exeter. I got it that hot summer '76, when a Rob Armstrong guitar split. Eventually I sold it to Sunjay's Dad (sunjay wasn't born then) but his Dad came to me for lessons. I believe Sunjay's step sister plays it these days.

If I had the 2 or 3 thousand quid, I'd much prefer to buy a high end Yamaha SG solid body guitar,
than a lesser quality overpriced Gibson Les Paul...

Though... ideally I'd want both...

Al, do you remember when the first Yamaha guitars appeared in the US and European market? They were the subject of much disbelief, and snide remarks about them were common- "How can motor cycle manufacturers suddenly make guitars?" was one - forgetting that Yamaha were making excellent pianos in the 19th century!

Their appearance in the marketplace also came at a time when the US makers were very complacent about their products. They got quite a shock when the Japanese competition held up strongly against them.

I've never played a Yamaha myself, but their musical products seem well designed and well made. Their electronic pianos, for example, are world leaders.

the thing about yamaha is that they have a research and development dept going at a thousand miles an hour.

the guitars that i bust a gut to buy for seven hundred quid a year or three ago(RRP 900-12000) can now be got for about five hundred quid on ebay.

the transacoustic will no doubt be superseded - they probably have its successor in the pipeline, as we speak.

The A5R ARE retails around ?1,200.00 and putting it against similar guitars in the same bracket it holds its own. I agree that after that excellent guitar, it?s difficult to see where quality goes up with price. As with all brands, it?s the badge and desirability at the top end of the range and in acoustic guitars, Yamaha don?t have that, despite how many of us were inspired by Bert Jansch playing one.

Incidentally, I often toy with the idea of a Yamaha Transacoustic for acoustic folk club use. They do make cracking guitars per se and the novelty of a similar chorus and reverb to that I get plugged in....

i've used yamaha guitars a lot over the years.

The main album that constitutes my main contribution to the folk/songwriting world was recorded on compass series cpx8.

the cpx8 was a beautiful guitar. a fabulous package of technology and lutherie for about five or six hundred quid. however in retrospect i wish that i'd used a guitar constructed with solid woods for my main album.

At the time there was nothing in yamaha range constructed of solid wood for less than two grand.

it was Faith guitars and Cort that started making the first reasonably priced solid wood guitars that i was aware of.   For a while I played a Parkwood Cort that Sunjay Brayne plays nowadays and prefers to his three thousand quid Collings.

Since then Yamaha and Fender have been my main guitars. The Fender Paramount with the Adirondack spruce top is my current standard tuning guitar and the yamaha ac3r is the one i use for open tunings. both are solid wood construction - both less than 700 quid.

i am genuinely interested in what a ten thousand quid yamaha will offer.

If you look at all the financial details for this guitar in the Gear4music web page, you'll see that you can get it on finance for £282 a month. After 48 months you'll have paid well,over £13,000 for it. Misprint? I don't think so.

Yamaha are after the top end of the market having nailed the bottom end with the F series so I wouldn?t be too surprised. Perhaps a typo though.

I have picked up ?2500 Yamahas and put them down again as not very special at trade fairs. No UK shops seem to wish to stock them though. You?ll find the L series and especially the novel Transacoustic models all hovering under a grand.

You can pay ?50k for a Yamaha piano if you are so minded and some of their woodwind and brass can leave you a few grand out of pocket. I?m sure they want a stake in the area where Lowden, Froggy Bottom and Sobell dwell.

We heard just a little of how that limited edition Martin guitar actually sounds, right at the end of the video. But we never heard a single note from the accompanying watch. Disappointing!

I can't imagine that price is correct. I ran into several special, hand built, Yamaha guitars at a show some years ago. They were priced at just over £1000 and all had early serial numbers. One particular model was No.1. I would have bought it but it sounded crap!

It seems to be that price in all the Google search results, so not an error by the look of it.

There are similar models in the series for around £3,500.

There was a 1962 Gibson ES335 for sale in GAK in Brighton recently - Price On Application. Out of curiosity, I emailed the shop. The price? £16,999...
