From: The Doctor
Date: 16 Feb 18 - 06:22 AM

Brian Senior, founder Member of the Grove Folk Club in Leeds (Apr 1962), Organiser of The Yorkshire Folk Company and long time Member of The Young Tradition with Peter Bellamy, died on 27th January after a short illness! He was 80.

Brian played the heroic “Captain” in the mini-drama/ panto put on each Christmas by the World Famous “Holbeck Moor Mummers” as well as being a fine Folk singer and squeeze box player in his own right.

He will be greatly missed.

Funeral details: Rawdon Crematorium LS19 6JP Monday 19th February at 11.40hrs. Afterwards at Gledhow Sports & Social Club, Leeds LS8 1NQ.

I am refreshing this so that more people see it. Brian did a great deal for folk music in his part of the world. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. My condolences to all those who know and love him.

RIP

Peter

Am I mistaken or did Brian have a long association with Keith Mardsden?

Derek Schofield may enlighten us.

Yes Brian and Keith played together as New Heritage before Keith moved on to Cockersdale. I knew Brian both as a colleague - he introdced me to folk music! - and a close friend in the 60/70s. Deeply saddened by his death.

Sad news indeed.

But whatever his claims to a place in the Folk Hall Of Fame, Brian was to my knowledge never "long time Member of The Young Tradition with Peter Bellamy"....

AS above ~ Brian was a long time member of New Heritage with Keith Marsden ~ latterly with Jim Potter and others as Three Score and Ten see Yorkshire Garland song data base also

Not a member of Young Tradition with Peter Bellamy!

A sad loss.

I first went to the Grove in my student days in Leeds 1964 - 67 when Brian was in the "Seven Hills" folk group with Keith Marsden and Keith's brother Howard (anyone know if he's still around?).

Didn't see him again until about 5 years ago when the Mummers played Skipton folk club. He remembered me when I reminded him of some of the sessions we'd had in the Dales, including my 21st at the Clarendon in Hebden, when he had a cottage at Greenhow.

I'm pleased that the memory is still fairly intact. I knew Brian had never been part of Young Tradition but supposed he might have done some work with Peter when Peter moved to God's country.

A sad loss indeed for as others have said Brian was a real stalwart.

Re: Young Tradition. I was surprised by that, but I was simply passing on the info I had received, and put the obit up as no-one else had. Brian certainly performed with Keith Marsden, and recorded with Cockersdale, on the Prospect Providence LP if nothing else.
Whoever and whatever he was with, he made a big impression on Yorkshire folk, and many of them turned out today for his funeral, a splendid affair at which Brian sang 'The Horn of the Hunter' - sadly now silent.

Im very sad to hear of Brian's passing, I got to know him quite well at Folk at The Grove over the past 20+ years, he was one of the stalwarts of the club no doubt and he will be missed by his many friends. Im also sorry I could not get the day off work to attend his funeral, I would have liked to have been there to say goodbye,
RIP Brian
