Yes your links are correct. I assume that is what the question marks were meant to ask.

Thanks for checking the links Guest.
Always worthwhile.
But actually, no, it's some glitch in the Mudcat copy\paste.
I think I've even deleted ?s from the preview but it looks like then the spaces next door get turned into ?s. idk... (or I might have pasted the wrong bit of text...!)

Good to know that Whitby Folk Week is still in August despite the worst endeavours of the Regatta.

Heather Clark - an Australian lady who is an authority on Folk Dance in Australia - is putting together a workshop / presentation of dances associated with James Cook.

I believe she will be in the UK in the summer during the dates of both the Whitby Sea Festival and Whitby Folk Week and so might be of interest to either event.

The Social dance programme is getting a bit of flack on Facebook apparently.

Perhaps a little early to judge as the actual programme is probably five months away but it does - with certain exception - seem somewhat lightweight.

Here's a dance tune with Cook associations. It's from a collection by William Campbell; Omai (real name Mai, the explorers got it wrong) was the Tahitian gent who acted as interpreter for Cook in New Zealand and went back with Cook to England before being taken back home on the next voyage. He was quite a celebrity when in England. Campbell gave dance instructions; I can't read those and didn't copy them. The booklet is in the Wighton in Dundee. There's nothing Polynesian about the tune - Campbell presumably thought D minor sounded barbarically exotic, and couldn't be bothered distinguishing Aotearoa and Aberdeenshire.

So we have made two discoveries here.
A (perhaps) previously unknown dance.
A subject that Mr Campin is not an expert in/at.
Wonders never cease.

Silver Street fisheries are good value.

Not sure if I will get there at all this year. Got a big trip planned for later in the year.

Been going to Whitby 20 years but no more due to the lightweight social dance, felt like unwanted guests last year.

Apparently people have been voicing the same criticism of the dance programme on facebook.

Seems there is an opportunity for someone(s) with a bit of imagination and organising ability to set up something to fill the void.

There are plenty of good size village halls within close proximity of Whitby and obtaining coaches to save people moving their cars should present no problem.

In the early days of the previous management's tenure a series of dances were held to cater for the numbers attending before more of the the halls within Whitby became available.

In years past all types of dancers were catered for in the main pavilion hall by having contract, Playford, ceilidh evenly split throughout the night, this also gave people a chance to try out different disciplines of dance, it seemed to me to work well. This was well supported why change it?
