The tune works very well to "What a Friend we have in Jesus". Either Calon Lan or Stenka Razin (either the traditional or the Tom Springfield arrangement). Both far better than the dire Converse tune found in most hymn books.

Oddly, in its earliest days, one denomination (can't remember which one off hand) refused to put it in its hymn book because "Duw" - God - doesn't get a look-in until the third verse.

It also kinda got stuck on the one tune for a long time, but Blaenwern is now quite a popular alternative tune - remembering that words and tunes were once a lot less soldered to each other.

There's a Welsh wine called Calon Lan and I'm not sure if there's also a cheese. Robin Huw Bowen and I often joked that we were going to have a party serving only Calon Lan and spend the whole night only singing the words of Calon Lan but to as many tunes as possible. I have heard it sung to Sprintime in the Rockies and Halls of Montezuma ...

One of my favourite Welsh songs. Thank you.

By sheer coincidence, one of our session group members played this yesterday on the fiddle.

Beautiful!

Helen

Lovely tune with words written by the Bard Gwyrosydd (or Daniel James as his parents knew him!) who was a tin plate worker and miner by day but is best known for his three books of poems published between 1885 and 1898.

He died in Swansea in 1920 and is buried in Mynydd Bach Chapel, Treboeth (just behind the Wilkie pub!).

Happy St. David's Day!

Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus,
Aur y byd na'i berlau mân:
Gofyn wyf am galon hapus,
Calon onest, calon lân.

Cytgan:
Calon lân yn llawn daioni,
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos:
Dim ond calon lân all ganu-
Canu'r dydd a chanu'r nos.

Pe dymunwn olud bydol,
Hedyn buan ganddo sydd;
Golud calon lân, rinweddol,
Yn dwyn bythol elw fydd.

Hwyr a bore fy nymuniad
Gwyd i'r nef ar edyn cân
Ar i Dduw, er mwyn fy Ngheidwad,
Roddi i mi galon lân.
