Hi, MickyMan-
There's an earlier threat titled Songs about Hunger (for kids) that came up with a few suggestions.

I found it when I was looking for:
    Hungry, hungry are we,
    Just as hungry as hungry can be;
    We don't get nothing for our labor,
    So hungry, hungry are we!

There are lots of "lefty" songs from the early 20th century that might satisfy you - or are you looking only for ones that are older than that era? One that would certainly fit is The Famine Song (Praties They Grow Small). Another on the subject of potatoes is Bulbes, and there are lots of other hunger songs in the thread with that "Bulbes" song.

Not traditional, but how about Joe Hill's The Preacher and the Slave; or Maurice Sugar's The Soup Song?

On Top of Spaghetti?

I've heard this was written by Tom Glazer, but I'm not so sure.

Oh, and then there's "Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts," also sometimes attributed to Tom Glazer - and again, I don't believe it.

The children's game "Jenny jo" or "Janet jo" - same storyline as the German folk ballad "Irdisches Leben" that Mahler set in his "Knaben Wunderhorn".

Speaking of the Wunderhorn, there's a set in there which is the original of the Young Traditions's "Hungry Child".

Let the back and the sides go bare me boys
Let your hands and feet grow cold
But give to the belly boys beer enough
Whether it be new or old............

In the bluegrass tradition we have Jimmy Brown the Newsboy. Very sad. Recorded by Joe Val.
