Hi everyone,

Does anyone know anything about the reel, The Ribbons of the Redheaded Girl?

I heard it on Dave Swarbrick's 'Smiddyburn' album, loved it and recorded it, but know nothing about it! I don't even know if it's Irish or Scottish, whether it's ever appeared in print or who composed it.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Gordon

Found on The Session website (just Googled the title) with notation. It says it's an Irish reel, though it looks like a hornpipe to me; haven't tried playing it yet.

Thanks Richard.

I was aware of this - it doesn't say much at all.

The way I heard the tune, and the way we play it, it's a reel played with loads of swing, but not a hornpipe.
