Subject: Cardiff Banjo, Mandolin & Guitar Band.

There is a track - "Scotch Broth" - on the CD "Gay Life in Dikanka - R. Crumb's Old-Time Favourites" (Bakhall BAKCD0029) played by the Cardiff Banjo, Mandolin & Guitar Band. It was apparently recorded in 1934. But, try as I might, I am unable to find anything out about this band. Who were they? What else did they record? Any help would be appreciated.

I should have added that the recording was made by English Decca and that the conductor was one Edward McGrath.

You could try contacting the BMG Federation.
They are also on Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried them some time ago, but without success. Will try again.

You might try contacting Fflur Gwyn at National Museum of Wales There also might be someone at the National Screen & Sound Archive who could help.

Thanks Sian for this suggestion. I have found out that the band were on the radio in 1934 and that their leader, Edward McGrath, worked in the Vauxhall factory in Cardiff, before moving to Luton. They were still shown as active in 1936 in a directory.

Edward was my grandfather. He worked in the Vauxhall factory in Luton after leaving Cardiff.

Jane, do you know anything about your grandfather and the band? I would love to write something about them. Do you have any photographs?
