Just to remind you that next Tuesday, 10th July we'll be meeting again for a traditional folk song & music session at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge (HX7 6LU).

We'll be starting at 8pm (usually with some gorgeous music from Mary Humphreys & Anahata), continuing until 10.30pm or a little later, with a short interval for lively music discussion or gossip. We're still trying to encourage a good proportion of unaccompanied song, although instruments are not unwelcome - and of course can contribute to tune sets from accomplished musicians.

And not forgetting those who come just to listen, who are most welcome. We'd like to see even more like-minded performers and listeners to come along, as the room is big enough to accommodate extra people comfortably, and still be great to sing in.

Dear traditional song supporters

Just to remind you, next Tuesday, 12th June, will be the fifth meeting of our folk song & music sessions at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge (HX7 6LU).

Singing starts at 8pm and continues until 10.30pm or a little later, with a short interval for lively music discussion or gossip. We're still enjoying a high standard of songs, unaccompanied and with instruments, and of tune sets from accomplished musicians. There are even those who come just to listen, and they're most welcome.

Readers of Tykes' News will see a short piece on our sessions at the front of the current issue, which may encourage even more like-minded performers and listeners to come along, which will be great. The room is big enough to accommodate a few more quite comfortably, and still be great to sing in.

What better month to sing folk songs with its name in the first line: I wonder how many we could fit in to one evening? This is just a gentle reminder that next Tuesday, 8th May, will be the fourth meeting of our song & music sessions at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge (HX6 6LU).

As those who have been before already know, the function room there is great to sing in, and the pub's other facilities include a car park, restaurant and rather good beer - do come much earlier if you want to eat there. We'll start singing at 8pm and aim to finish by 10.30pm, although sometimes run a little later to get everybody in.

A high quality has been set, with choruses, ballads and lyrical pieces - unaccompanied and with instruments. If this sounds like your kind of folk music, do join us on any second Tuesday of the month to celebrate traditional folk song with like-minded performers and listeners.

Good news! The door at the back of the room leads out on to the towpath and has a concrete ramp up to our room. So we have disabled access. Thick head here should have checked that a lot earlier, so I'm sorry if this is too late for Old Nic Kilby.

I played there many times with my mate Clive a few years ago at the Open Mic Surgery, no-one had to pay to get in, it's a bit like being charged an entrance fee to drink beer.

What is better for the landlord an empty room or one filled with people drinking ?

Yes there is a door on to the towpath, and I think there is a ramp up to it. I will be at the pub tomorrow, and I'll check it out and have a word with the landlord. I'll post tomorrow night for to NK.

I seem to remember the room is on the same level as the canal towpath. And there was an exit to the canal towpath, but maybe a few steps were still involved ...?

No sabre rattling on this thread! In any case, it was Nick's question to answer, Richie (who's Dave?).
The point is that if there's a charge levied by the pub for use of the room, it's only fair for everyone to make a contribution towards that.

Guest - yes, it's true that a majority of pub-based sessions don't have use of a separate function room. And no, it wouldn't be called a session if it were a "paid to perform" scenario.

Nick's Glad4Trad sessions really deserve your support, they don't need any sniping from Guests regarding the suggestion of making a perfectly reasonable contribution.

Without wishing to hijack this thread though, just to emphasise that Glad4Trad has not replaced our own Just Voices session, which continues at Hunslet (Leeds) on the final Tuesday of each month.
The specific difference between the two sessions is that Just Voices is exactly that, for it was started up four years ago to fill a gap in the session scene (it is still to our knowledge the only session for purely unaccompanied singers in our region).

Why not come and support both sessions?

The Glad4Trad folk sessions are held every second Tuesday of the month at the Stubbing Wharf pub in Hebden Bridge, from 8 to 10.30pm. Mary Humphreys & Anahata were keen supporters of this new enterprise from the start in February, and there has been a growing attendance from other talented singers and musicians since then.

Many of them are known as booked guests at folk venues, but who also appreciate the opportunity to sing/hear traditional song in an informal atmosphere. A high quality and good variety of traditional song was therefore set right from the start, with choruses, classic ballads and lyrical pieces - unaccompanied and with instruments.

If this sounds like your kind of folk music, come along and enjoy some of our sessions in the months ahead. Forthcoming dates are: April 10th, May 8th, June 12th, July 10th, August 14th and September 11th. We'll be glad4trad to see you!

Stubbing Wharf has a car park, a restaurant, good beer and an acoustically excellent function room - donations of £3 are suggested to cover costs.
