Subject: Session in the highlands End of May From: GUEST Date: 03 Apr 18 - 07:52 AM Hi I'm planning a wander north for the last week of May. My likely stopping points are Inverness, Ullapool and Stornoway. Are there any sessions going on in these areas ? I'm on public transport so they would have to be within walking distance of the centre of each town. Ideally I'm looking for a traditional mixed session with probably slightly more tune than song which wouldn't mind a visit from wandering singer. If necessary I can bellow over pub noise and I am a very good listener if a song is out of the question. :) Thanks Julie |

Subject: RE: Session in the highlands End of May From: Scabby Douglas Date: 03 Apr 18 - 09:03 AM The Dundonnell Hotel on Little Loch Broom (near Ullapool) has weekly sessions on - they're a little movable, (Usually Fridays, but sometimes moves to Saturdays, sometimes a Monday) but they're always open to visiting folkies. Be a good idea to call them nearer the time, to check what they're doing: 01854 633204 The Ferry Boat Inn in Ullapool has Open mic nights on Wednesdays. |

Subject: RE: Session in the highlands End of May From: FreddyHeadey Date: 03 Apr 18 - 10:58 PM Thanks guest, the craic n gigs is a handy little list. NB It also has a page of links taking you further afield than East Sutherland. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ btw for reference... related thread with a batch of generally folky Scottish links : https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=153394#3593927 |
Subject: RE: Session in the highlands End of May From: GUEST,Andymac Date: 05 Apr 18 - 03:50 AM Julie, The Argyll Hotel in Ullapool had weekly sessions every Monday last year from around 8pm. Inverness has a range of sessions including The Waterfront (7.30, every 2nd Sunday); McGregor's (every Sunday afternoon), Hootenany's (most Nights from around 8) and the Gellions (Tuesday around 8). These all tend to be mixed sessions but Gellions and Hoots are more tune-based. Hope this helps. Andymac |
Subject: RE: Session in the highlands End of May From: Gallus Moll Date: 06 Apr 18 - 07:00 PM Anything on at The Ceilidh Place (Ullapool)? - or - what about inviting folks to come to a session wherever it is you are going to be?! (Many years ago I organised a week of sessions in local hotels/pubs for a councillor friend who was doing a sponsored walk from her home in Dunoon via Portavadie to council HQ in Lochgilphead I just contacted every folkie / singer / musician I knew or had heard of in each community and a load of them turned out!) |
Subject: RE: Session in the highlands End of May From: GUEST,Observer Date: 08 Apr 18 - 06:24 AM If you are up that end of the country towards the end of May and you are looking for sessions go just that bit further north and go to Stromness on Orkney where the Orkney Folk Festival will be in full swing (24th to 27th May IIRC). Sessions going on all day in practically every pub in town. |
Subject: RE: Session in the highlands End of May From: GUEST Date: 10 Apr 18 - 08:05 AM Thanks for all your help. I hadn't thought about Orkney but it looks as if I have left it a bit late for accommodation. Looks like I've at least got a chance passing through Inverness :) Thanks again Julie |
