Subject: BS: Where do the picks go?
From: lefthanded guitar

We know where all the flowers have gone. We're pretty sure where
that spare sock had gone:
creviced in the recesses of our dryer. Pens, even lost pens can be
found again, usually by tracing the ink stains in the pockets of one's
best hand woven sweater.

But picks!!! Wherever do they disappear to?!? I buy a half dozen at
a time, and by the end of the month, they've all disappeared.
Not in the guitar case. Not in the little clear plastic pickbox I
bought just for this very reason. Not on my desk, or under my desk,
or even between the, admiittedly, ever growing pile of newspapers,
books and magazines adorning my desk.

Here 's the weird thing- they disappear and are never to be
seen or heard from again. Socks turn up when you do
enough laundry. Pens (and keys and lost CDs) turn up
when you move. And I m not saying anyone should consider
moving just to find a rare and cherished autographed Bill Staines CD, that may
eventually show up in your sock drawer (as did mine). But they
do show up, eventually (though you may have to do a cartload
of laundry and move some furniture around.)

But where are those flatpicks?!!!???

Btw I realize this is a pretty slim topic for discussion, but hey,
I'm suffering through the longest winter to ever hit the
Tri state area. Snow the first week of April and TWO more
snowstorms heading this way this week. So I ' m lookin'
for some humorous diversions and observations from
you witty and/or philosophical catters. I' m looking
for a way to pass these slushy hours indoors. I 'm
looking for some fun.

And I 'm also looking for my picks.

Mine go into a big 'Ziploc' bag, must be around 200in there now. Those are the ones that weren't good enough.

The picks I actually use - four or five BlueChips and a couple of Red Bears - live in a 'Curiously Strong Mints' tin, along with my Dunlop thumb-picks and Propik Fingertones-picks. Had them all for at least five years - at $40 a pick, you sure as hell take care of them.

why is this below the line?

Rob Armstrong , the guitar maker/folksinger of the Modern Idiot Grunt Band, had an idea on this subject.

The idea was:-

WE all pay into a central fund. Then you can pick up any capo, pick, thumbpick that you happen upon - possibly for ever.

perhaps some people believe this scheme is already in action.

As with all problems there is a solution for this. It is in three stages.

Stage one;

learn to finger pick for everything.

Stage two;

learn to play everything without a capo.

Stage three;

smugly sit back and watch everyone else struggle with, or without, picks and capos.

The Sock Bandit is well known around the world, dunno about the Pick Bandit tho, but I have occasionally found a pick in the Community Centre after a music group has used it!

There is a law in some branch of maths or physics - can't remember which, it's fifty years since I ploughed at Uni - that in any closed system, for every source there is an equal and opposite sink. This was certainly true of ballpoint pens at work - I was always taking them from the stationary cupboard but never actually used one completely up, OTOH there were others who never visited the said cupboard but whose desk drawers were full of them.

So there must be players who never actually buy picks, but their cases are full of them. All you have to do is find such a person and pair up with them.

So true.

Where have all my good picks gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all my good picks gone?
Long time ago
Where have all my good picks gone?
Scattered on some bar room floor. (pronounced 'flo-')
When will I ever learn?

Or, from the other viewpoint:

I've got picks, they're multiplying
Found some good capos too.
Don't know just who's supplying,
It's just mystifying.

Just pick 'em up,
just pick up that pick . . .

I don't loose as many as I used to. Having 2 pick boxes, one for the main living room and one for my room/going out seems to have helped matters so I guess a fair number used to get lost in pockets moving between one room and another. I also double up with capos and tuner these days.

I can't answer why picks have so often vanished never to turn up at a later date though.

Never put them in the back pocket of your pants: If you don´t be careful enough to keep them away from any r`s they turn into pricks.

I used to use the grapeshot method where you buy 12 packs (Dunlop Ultex or Clayton 1.0's) and keep them scattered around the place but now I use a form of Backwoodsman method which is a bit more modest in price. I buy Dunlop Prime 1.4 large triangles which cost about 2 bucks a piece and my frugal nature has trained me to insert the pick between the strings whenever I finish playing an instrument and consequently I haven't lost a pick in a good long while.

Haven't lost one for years, I've broken a few, but I have had some for over a decade. The secret is the little plastic pick holder attached to my guitars. Ever time I finish playing back goes the pick.

Nay bother!!

The pricks around here go to the meat markets and pick up parlors from book stores to clubs.

A friend says: "A pick is a flat piece of plastic the same color as the carpet".

As an autoharp player, I carefully guard 2 finger picks I made of brass. I had 3, but one is somewhere under the steps, in a heap of leaves at the dining hall of a camp I used to go to. They are large, open steps...perhaps they are a graveyard for YOUR picks....

They drop to carpets and bury themselves in the pile, like sea creatures escaping a predator into the ooze on the sea floor. On a hard floor, they scoot behind chair legs or the legs of audience members.

I put a bit of hot-pink duct tape on my picks so they aren't camouflaged as well. Nonetheless, they escape, given enough time.

Billy Connolly supposed that the tiny little pocket that you can't even get your finger into on the front of your jeans just under the belt is for keeping your picks in. You'd never lose them but you might never be able to get at them...

All reasonable and hilarious explanations. You catters have me
grinning from ear to ear ( hope I can hold onto this smile by tomorrow
morning when our second April snowstorm arrives)
Well it looks like I have many choices to attempt to hold onto the
fleeing pieces of plastic- I can buy $40 picks and assume
that my frugal habits will help me keep better track of them) . I can join
a pick commune, or dip into the pocket or guitar case of that
guy who never buys his own picks, and is hoarding mine- and yours.

I can sing along to the wonderful pick parody songs. But so fat I tend to agree most
with Leeneia's explanation. Picks are sentient, mobile and most likely paranoid
little creatures that will always find a place to hide- whether in a concert
hall or in the muck of the primordial sea. Lmao.

Day glo colored duct tape, huh? Maybe a good solution, tho
I 've lost several phosphorent hued picks as well. And of course,
I'd have to remember where I've misplaced the tape. ??
.
I think I will, for now, just try. In my small and humble way, to do my
part in keeping the mom and pop valient little music stores
in sound financial health by continuing to purchase my monthly
quota of picks.

Btw this thread is still open- snows coming Tuesday as well - sigh.

.

With memories of pairs of gloves on a long string, threaded through the sleeves of a coat, by careful mothers:
Drill a small hole in one corner, and attach by thread to your wrist.

I've always thought about getting personalised picks with my name photograph and website on. The trouble is - I only play with my fingers so it would be a vanity project.

well Mr Rivers, we know how they get to the ocean!

I have, on occasions, found picks. So try asking the bodhran player, they are ever so helpful like that. Now has anyone found a red tipper?

When our son lived at home, he could never find his picks: I found them all over tge house and still have some of them. Always keep one in the outside pocket of my money purse.

The other answer is, check your keyboard gig bag, if you have one. Surprised to find one in mine after a famous person asked to borrow my keyboard for a gig at our local folk club. (He also played guitar). Fortunately the pick did not slide between the keys!

When I was young, I had lots of hair and lost picks by the dozen. Now, I'm old and bald, but I never lose picks.

NOTE: Before shaving your head to prevent pick loss, please be aware that correlation does not necessarily imply causation.

I pulled them out of the bottom of the washer after doing my son's laundry, and they were placed on the shelf above the washer. He finally figured out to look there first. And Steve, my son rather cleverly referred to that pocket as his "pick pocket."
