I would have made the same mistake as Obama in his position
Damned if you adjoin a foreign civil war and damned if you don't.
This LARGEST European refugee problem since WWII has hardened the hearts of the xenophobic extreme right.

20-20 Hindsight and all, now we know.

Catching up
"Should we have intervened more in that civil war?"
A Civil War would never have taken place had the West (or preferably the UN) intervened place when Assad started massacring his own people - Homs being a prime case for intervention
Instead, we (Britain) supplied riot control equipment to suppress the Arab Spring protests (from which the Civil War emerged) and probably licensed the sale of sniper bullets that trained the snipers that were taking bets on who could kill a woman and a child with one bullet on the streets of Homs
When the gas was first used on Civilians it was revealed that it was possibly British Chemicals that helped Assad create a stockpile of those weapons
Our Government ignored the pleas of deserting Syrian politicians and military figures who requested that Britain should use her influence to stop Assad's gallop or, failing that, should seize his millions in British banks and the property he owned in London
Throughout the Homs massacre, Assad's gofer brother-in-law went in and out of London doing his master's bidding as if he was shopping at Harrods - that money and property remains untouched
When all this is over and the bodies are being counted, it needs to be remembered that British and other "decent, democratic" countries share the responsibility for their demise
That goes for the victims of Isis, a group of isolated who would have remained that way until Syria enabled them to get their to in the international door
Talk about bolting horses and unlocked stable doors
This should have been a clear enough warning of THINGS to COME
Jim Carroll

The Ban the Bomb imperative was lessened on account of the initiatives of Gorbachev.

The biggest problem is that even if every nuke in the world is decommissioned, we can never undo the knowledge of how to build them.

In fact many are clamoring for WW3. We seem to forget there is such a thing as right or wrong, fact or nonsense. a href="https://fair.org/home/major-papers-urge-trump-to-kill-syrians-risk-world-war-iii/">https://fair.org/home/major-papers-urge-trump-to-kill-syrians-risk-world-war-iii/

An expert historian will have more examples of how history may repeat itself. The only factor that is unique is the manufacture, possession and use of nuclear weapons. The manufacturing and testing of the weapons have created many tragedies as well as the use.

We have been relatively lucky the use has not been a more dire world changing event.

Obviously-
The traditional means of choosing possible 'brain dead' leaders is too dangerous to continue. Luck is just not dependable.
Can we continue down this path?
We have asked this question for some time now.

What are some new alternatives to entrusting such acute extinction level possibilities to 'brain dead individuals?
We tried banning the bomb to no avail. We've tried living with the proliferation of nuclear weapons. What else?

I believe History is ill equipped to tackle this question. Or am I wrong? Some claim ancient India may have wrestled with this scenario.
I don't know but history may have no answers for us.

I find the President's behaviour over recent weeks is inconsistant.
Just looking at his tweets shows a kind of Jekyll and Hyde behaviour.
One minute pugnacious, the next conciliatory!

This is most bizarre. Is it coded language to show the fight between deep state and the presidency? Between hawks and doves? Has anyone else noticed this?

Different disciplines have different language. No one speaks them all.

You did not understand 7 of the foremost psychoanalysts in the world.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
I think you assumed they were my version of what you call - "Not straight English". I believe multiple PhD's are proof you are an erudite.

On other occasions I find it takes some courage to be creative and speak with poetic license. The obvious is shallow except when the many are ignorant of the obvious.
Perhaps like John Cleese you have old wounds from a stiff English boarding school education. Just because you sound like a class conscious snob doesn't mean that's all you are, you Beethoven lover.

Everyone may not cohere to your definitions. Reality is broader than one opinion.

I will continue to respect what I can and disregard the rest.

a clue:
when there is so much to say there are abbreviated thoughts I only allude to. For some it is called reading between the lines and cultural metaphors as well as a common language separated by centuries.
Now go to bed you cranky naughty boy.

Let me put this to bed once and for all. I'm an erudite and articulate enough chap to know that if I can't understand what you type, Donuel, you yourself understand what you've typed even less. I should like to suggest that you ditch the attempt at over-cleverness that, rather unsuccessfully, tries to mask your shallowness, and resort instead to plain and straightfoward English. I suppose it would expose you for a man with little depth, but at least we'd come to respect you a little more and not have to avoid about three-quarters of your impenetrable posts like the plague. Good manners dictate that we all express ourselves in ways that don't force our readers into irritated and unnecessary mental processing. That's a lesson you have yet to learn.

Chlorine is used to mask the use of nerve agents. The casualties had symptoms of exposure to both chlorine and nerve agent.

Chlorine is used to purify water and also has a multitude of industrial uses. Including making bulk materials like bleached paper products, plastics such as PVC and the solvents tetrachloromethane, chloroform and dichloromethane. It is also used to make dyes, textiles, medicines, antiseptics, insecticides and paints.

You bomb a stockpile of it and lo and behold clouds of chlorine are released.

"The Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM) also concluded that the symptoms of the casualties were consistent with exposure to a nerve agent, possibly one mixed with chlorine. Dr Raphal Pitti of UOSSM France said he thought "chlorine was used to conceal the use of [the nerve agent] Sarin".

The United States, which supports the opposition to Mr Assad, said the victims' symptoms appeared to be "consistent with an asphyxiation agent and of a nerve agent of some type"

"At 19:45, more than 500 patients - most of them women and children - were brought to medical facilities with symptoms indicative of exposure to a chemical agent, according to the Syria Civil Defence and the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), a relief organisation that supports hospitals.

The patients showed signs of "respiratory distress, central cyanosis (blue skin or lips), excessive oral foaming, corneal burns, and the emission of chlorine-like odour", a joint statement issued on Sunday said. One woman who died had convulsions and pinpoint pupils"

French President Emmanuel Macron said France has proof the Syrian government was behind the suspected chemical attack last week in Douma, but added that he would decide whether to intervene once all the necessary information had been gathered.

"We have proof that last week... chemical weapons were used, at least chlorine, and that they were used by the regime of Bashar al-Assad," Macron said during a television interview.

Macron said French and U.S. officials were "working together very closely, and we will have decisions to take, at the time we choose, when we consider it most useful and most effective."

Jimmy's big brother hears about this and says 'Oy, Johnny's brother, if you try to kick my little brother's arse, I will break your leg.'

There has been no threat against Johnny's brother but it seems acceptable for him to intervene on his little brother's behalf.

Perfectly describes the situation. In more ways that one.

Actually there was no threat made to launch missiles before the threat to shoot them down and to attack the launch site by the Russians. What was said after the gas attack was that there would be a "big price to pay".

Incidentally President Macron last month warned that France would strike unilaterally if Syria used chemical weapons again.

"The announcement came after an AFP journalist witnessed explosions and heard three blasts over the capital, which has come under repeated attack by Huthi rebels.

Malki said Saudi forces also intercepted two missiles in the southern Jizan and Najran provinces, close to the border with Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has since March 2015 led a coalition of Arab states fighting to roll back the Huthi rebels in Yemen and restore its neighbour's internationally-recognised government to power.

Nearly 10,000 people have since been killed in the conflict, in what the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Saudi Arabia accuses its rival Iran of smuggling missiles to the Huthis -- a charge Tehran denies."

Errrr, surely, someone made the threat to launch missiles in the first place. Had that threat not been made there would have been no threat to shoot them down.

Errrr, the threat was not made to the Russians who have no troops there anyway - remember they were withdrawn in December. The threat was made to Assad for using poison gas against his people.

On the other hand:

So long, mom,
I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me.
But while you swelter
Down there in your shelter,
You can see me
On your tv.
While we're attacking frontally,
Watch brinkally and huntally,
Describing contrapuntally
The cities we have lost.
No need for you to miss a minute
Of the agonizing holocaust. (yeah!)

Little Johnny Jones he was a U.S. Pilot,
And no shrinking vi'let was he.
He was mighty proud when world war three was declared,
He wasn't scared,
No siree!

And this is what he said on
His way to armageddon:

So long, mom,
I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me.
But though I may roam,
I'll come back to my home,
Although it may be
A pile of debris.
Remember, mommy,
I'm off to get a commie,
So send me a salami,
And try to smile somehow.
I'll look for you when the war is over,
An hour and a half from now!

Maybe it's time for Marion Zimmer Bradley's compact which bans 'ranged weapons'. The only weapons to be used (in some of her 'Darkover' novels) were those that don't leave the hand of the fighter.

Okay. We would probably have lost at Agincourt, and the colonists would have had a harder time conquering America, but it's an interesting scenario.

Slightly hyperbolic, Iains, but generally I agree with that. But we're rubbing up against a man with a mission in Putin. He resented the fall of the USSR and wants his country back in superpowerdom. He sees himself as the indomitable and invulnerable saviour of Russia. That makes him slightly mad. And bad and dangerous. What we need like a hole in the head is a vacuous twittering twat in the White House eyeballing him. That's where we are at the moment and that's why we're in big trouble. He's as strong as ever and we're choosing now of all times to have a go at him. I thoroughly agree that getting all indignant about a so-far unverified chemical attack (after seven years of brutal slaughter that has already outdone Iraq) and a so-far unverified poisoning in Salisbury has nothing to do with this. That's just the ruse. The word "chemical" has been spun into a massive bundle of emotion. I mean, where have all the ruses been for the last seven years?
