and some here are big fans...

.. and I'm very fond of Shaggy's big hits from the 90s...

Ah yes Sting that "Colossus" of the Folk scene. What's he up to now? Haven't seen him on the scene or in any folk club for that matter for what is it now> Decades?

His musical 'The Last Ship' contained a lot of songs in the folk idiom, performed by folk artists. I think it did a lot to introduce folk to a wider audience.

My mrs has listened to the available youtube tracks of the new CD
and says she really likes them.
But she has more MOR taste than me...
As far as reggae goes, she even liked UB40...

Apparently Sly and Robbie are involved in this new recording to some extent...???

Sting's "The Last Ship". Would that have been the inspiration for Bill Bryden's production "The Ship - the Epic Story of A River and its People" from 1990? Or was it the other way round? Bryden's "The Ship" was probably the best staged show I have ever seen, particularly the finale where the ship gets launched.

I'm a big listener to Jamaican music. It's an ocean that one couldn't get to the bottom of if one tried. One of the things about Jamaican music that many people have emphasized is that the 'real" stuff has a certain "sound." If it doesn't have that sound, for a fan, it just doesn't satisfy. It's like if you've eaten the cuisine in China, and you know that taste, it's hard to stomach the stuff they pass off in certain restaurants aimed at non-Chinese patrons. While you're eating it, you're wishing you were elsewhere and kicking yourself for coming here.

I'm not making an argument for "authenticity" as something valuable in and of itself. I'm just hearing this music and thinking I'd rather be diving in that ocean of "real" Jamaican music, wondering why I am here. I know this doesn't claim to be real Jamaican music (even if Sly and Robbie are about!), and I'm not criticizing it for not being so. I'm just thinking about all that delicious Jamaican music that I could be eating while I'm in this restaurant entertaining Sting's "special spin" on it. Perhaps if he teamed up with King Jammy and he just offered his voice as a timbre for the JA producer to work with?

I don't think 'The Ship' and 'The Last Ship' are connected in any way apart from being set against a backdrop of shipbuilding, the former on the Clyde and the latter on the Tyne.

Going back to the thread, I really like single and must look up some of the other songs. I'll try Spotify later :-)

Not heard the collaborations with Shaggy but I did like The Last Ship. Not that I saw the musical itself but I liked his album and the concert from New York which does include some from the UK folk scene. Lyrically he's come a long way since Da Doo Doo Doo Da Da Da Da!
