My husband tells me I know a lot of songs, and I think, "Doesn't everybody?" Example: on a recent visit to Florida, an earworm came to me. "In the Mission of St Augustine..." it went, and that was all.

When I got home, I found the song on YouTube. The version I remembered is the Sammy Kaye version. I was taken aback to realize that I was remembering a scrap of song from 1953.

It's a good tune, pleasant, and with interesting accidentals which call for a delicate hand on the accompaniment. here are the lyrics:

In the mis-sion of St. Au-gus-tine we said fare-well,
and we made a vow to meet a-gain as tear-drops fell.
But now I wait a-lone while the can-dles burn.
My dar-ling, where are you? Won't you please re-turn?
In the mis-sion of St. Au-gus-tine I'll wait for you,
and the eve-ning bells will chime a song just for us two.
I'll kneel and say a prayer for the mo-ment when
in the mis-sion of St. Au-gus-tine we'll meet a-gain.
a-gain.

(I've changed 'vesper bells' to 'evening bells'. 'Vesper' sounds like Italian for wasp.)

And why was a song about separated lovers hitting the charts?

Dates of the Korean war:

Sammy Kaye version

I found a recording on Spotify by The Orioles; their version and Sammy Kaye's both came out in October 1953, according to Billboard magazine.

IN THE MISSION OF ST. AUGUSTINE
Words and music by Jack Chiarelli, ©1953.
As recorded by The Orioles, 1953.

In the mission of Saint Augustine
We said farewell,
And we made a vow to meet again
As teardrops fell;
But now I wait alone
While the candles burn.
My darling, where are you?
Won't you please return?

||: In the mission of Saint Augustine,
I'll wait for you,
And the vesper bells will chime their song
Just for us two.
I'll kneel and say a prayer
For that moment when,
In the mission of Saint Augustine,
We'll meet again. :||
