Why is it topical? The upcoming royal wedding, or something less apparent to the rest of the world? (Asking from across the pond.)

They're naming a bridge between England and Wales after Prince Charles. Welsh activists are saying it should be named after Owen Glendower instead. There is one (rather daft) Welsh song about Prince Charles already written for the occasion, but one about Owen might be more durable. (If we in Scotland can have songs about Wallace and Bruce that the whole world knows about, how come the Welsh don't have an equivalent?)

Maybe, not that many as the only thing I can think Owen Glendower rhymes with is "bow down 'n' bend o'er"...
which is not a very heroic mental image...

But possibly historically accurate, at least from a particularly English perspective of defeating his revolt...

Rhymes with "endure" if you pronounce it as in Welsh.

Naming a bridge after Prince Charles, eh? From what I can tell, Charles alternates between being a nonentity and being despised. Whose idea was this?

On a pedantic note the proposal is to rename it the Prince of Wales Bridge not the Prince Charles Bridge.

Pick your prince, Brian, Glyndwr or any Prince of Wales in between.

It is often said that "Marw yr Ehedydd" (The Skylark's Elegy) refers indirectly to OWAIN GLYNDWR - Owen Glendower being Shakespeare's anglicization of the name. It was collected by Soley Thomas early in the last century (or perhaps late in the previous one)around Llanidloes, but only the one verse.


Mi a glywais fod yr 'hedydd
Wedi marw ar y mynydd.
Pe gwyddwn i mai gwir y geirie
Awn a gyrr o wy^r ac arfe
I gyrchu corff yr 'hedydd adre.

I heard that the skylark
Has died upon the mountain.
If I knew these words to be true
A would take a host of men at arms
To carry the body of the skylark home.

Other verses (as per link, above) were written later but don't perpetuate the story.

I think there are probably some new pieces from the '70s, perhaps by Plethyn, Ar Log, Ac Eraill and ilk. If I can think of any others, I'll be back ...

Yeh, Plethyn has some, which isn't surprising as they come from the area near Sycharth, Glyndwr's court.
