In Noreen's two posts I see six of what I'm calling a cat's face. They all look pretty similar, I can see one has maybe a tear next to one eye. If I take the trouble to enlarge the screen I can see one with a > for one eye and a big heart shaped mouth. ~~~~~~~~ I understand a wink ;) -"I don't really mean this" a smile :) -"This is\that was funny or good" sad :( -"unfortunately \ This is\that was sad" Anything beyond that is lost on me. When I was a child pulling tongues was done with both eyes open and meant "go away, I don't like you" I don't remember anyone winking at the same time as pulling tongues. Adults might have pulled tongues at a child,followed by a smile, as a joke; I don't remember adults pulling tongues at other adults. Maybe I've lead a sheltered life! If I read a book or article I hope I'll pick up whether it is serious or humourous or sarcastic. But if I get the wrong end of the stick it doesn't usually matter. It also helps to know the subject and particularly to know the writer from earlier pieces. The snag with 'clever' or subtle humour in forums is that it can be read in too many different ways. On a public forum you don't know who is reading it for the first(\last!) time. And the emoticon can be misread too so it might be clouding rather than clarifying the message. |

There's a site called Netmums, and the young ladies on there call each other 'hun' and their babies 'bubs'. Their site is absolutely covered in twinkly sparkly emojis/emoticons (is there a difference?) and fancy stuff. Rather childish in my view, but I'm sure they enjoy it all. However, I'm smiling here, as you might as well be typing Serbo-Croat. I haven't a clue what you're all talking about. I'm with McGrath. And oi! What's wrong with pen-and-ink eh? |

If so I think it's because some browsers recognise those - the unicode block starting at x1F600 - as emojis and handle them differently - applying a special emoji image set. Grishka's emoticons are symbols, and are displayed using the website or default browser font. That's why you can colour them with a font color tag - you can't do that with the x1F600 emoji. So my guess is that whatever font you're displaying this page with does not have glyphs for those symbols. (I notice that Jeri's emoji looks deranged on an iPad but quite friendly on Android. What on earth does it mean?) |

IME the problem with the web generally and forums in particular is that: because the body language is non-existent people re-interpret what you write in the context their own sensitivities. In human communications we are still a visual species. On-line dating attests to this problem, I discovered this 30 years ago with ads in the personal columns of newspapers. The same problemo. No body language. Until emoticons. A poor substitute for body language, but short of a video link (AND smellyvision), the best we can do. |

Some of these are clear insults, all have to be used carefully. Rarely two have exactly the same meaning; there are situations in which an emoticon "says it all" ☺. - Wikipedia about "Wink": ... The West Winking in Western culture can be used as a way of letting someone else know that the winker or some other person is joking or lying (e.g., a parent tells their child a story about a fairy princess, and then winks at the child's older sibling, the sibling thus knows the parent is lying to the younger child). |

Which illustrates a couple if problems with emoticons - they may not appear the same to other people and it's not obvious what they mean. They may not even always appear the same on a particular device. On the Unicode webpage it does appear as black. ? The number of bytes used by a unicode symbol, as encoded in UTF-8 which is what Mudcat's forum uses, is shown here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-8#Description All the ones in the new Emoticons table I linked to earlier are 4-bytes in UTF-8. I've never thought of ;-) - wink - as expressing irony. Unicode is an international standard system for encoding (i.e. turning into a code) letters, non-western characters, symbols, hieroglyphs, and pictures. Every emoticon has a Unicode number which you can look up on the internet. For example the grinning face at the top left of the table on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoticons_(Unicode_block) is 1F600 (usually written U+1F600) and the devil further along is 1F608. The next row starts 1F610 To post these you type: 😀 😀 😈 😈 😐 😐 The &# prefix and the final semicolon turn it into an html code. The x specifies that it's in hexadecimal - hex 1F600 is decimal 128512 so this works too: 😀 😀 This method should work with any Unicode symbol - e.g. Chinese characters. BUT - just because you can see it, it doesn't mean everyone else can. It depends on having the appropriate font installed. There are also lots of sites which will give you the codes - Mr Red has one. |
