duke, duke, duke, duke-of-
EARL, duke, duke, duke-of-....

Has this Yankee got it straight?

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall
and the Duke's two sons are
The Duke of Cambridge, with his Duchess,
and the newly named (drum roll)
Duke of Sussex with his newlywed Duchess.

Whew.

Yes keberoxu, quite right. And Prince Andrew (Charles' brother) is the Duke of York.
But the youngest brother (Prince Edward) is merely an Earl of Wessex. No idea why.

Now all we need is a Duke of Lancaster
and they can re-enact
the War of the Roses.

The Monarch is always the Duke of Lancaster and has been for over 500 years.

So the Queen, female, is the Duke and not the Duchess.

There was also of course, the Duke of Windsor. But I suspect it will have to be quite some time before they revive that title for a royal prince.

Never mind all that male/female stuff - what the hell is going on with "Princess Michael of Kent?" Is it an early example of non-binary??

Not forgetting, of course, the Duke of Edinborough.

When Charles married Diana it was formally announced that she would be known as 'Princess Charles' - an instruction that was thereafter ignored by everyone.
Making Harry and Meghan a duke and duchess solves the problem.

I read somewhere that Prince Edward is likely to take over the title of Duke of Edinburgh after Prince Philip has gone.

well apparntly Harry is also Earl or Duke or something of Dumbarton -- which won't last long as Scottish Independence is a-comin' sooner rather than later -- -
(and another title that sounds N Irish?)

-off with their heads!!!!

I believe he's now Baron Kilkeel (Co Down, Northern Ireland) as well as Earl of Dumbarton and Duke of Sussex. (all conferred upon him today by HM) I suppose that makes Meghan Duchess of Sussex (try saying that with a lisp - Ducheth of Thuthekth) Countess of Dumbarton and Baroness Kilkeel.

My husband and I are the Duke and Duchess of Adjame!

you can have a sultan of swing.

The Duke of Windsor had influenza,
He found he could no longer pee
He took a dose of the Hideous Compound
And now they pipe him out to sea

Or

The Duke of Buckingham got tired of fukcking 'em
He found he could no longer shag
He took a dose of the Hideous Compound
Now forty kids all call him "Dad"

Can't remember any more

"Fuck me" said the Duchess, and the (k)night rolled on.

She said, "Sir Knight, I offer my honour"
He said, "Fair Duchess, I honour your offer,
And all night long he was off her and on her.

Once a king , always a king
Once a Knight - quite enough

Jim Carroll

Jim, is the Hideous Compound in your post the original of the Scaffold's Medicinal Compound?

It was a Liverpool song that appeared around about the same time (you know of the Scaffold/McCartney connection, of course)
It had an interminable number of verses and every time you heard it a new one was added
Very adaptable form

The Duke of Hartford, he couldn't far, for
They found that he was full of crap
He took a dose of the Hideous Compound
And now they've had to fit a tap

(one I made earlier)

the reigning Monarch is the Duke of Lancaster? Whatta loophole.

And the Duchess of York is Fergie.

See? it IS war.
Albeit not of the Roses.

There is one MAJOR benefit of the Queen being the Duke of Lancaster.

She is the head of the Church of England and thus "God's representative" in this septred Isle.

Thus God chose Lancashire, and thus Lancashire, not Yorkshire, is Gods County.

I do love explaining that to Yorkshire folk !!
