Did anyone else hear Will Pound explaining different types of Morris Dance on BBC Radio 4 Front Row at 7.20pm last Friday. Just wondered what other people thought ….Maybe I am getting old, need to adjust my hearing or something but I didn't quite "get it" and wondered how a non folk audience might react

His real name and he started out as a drummer in Steamchicken he did think of styling his name as William. I pointed-out to him that Will Pound was more catchy as a drummer, and I doubt I was the only one.

Podacst for Friday 18th May. @ 21 mins to 28 mins
They mentioned his show and it is part of Chippenham Folk Festival Big Top Monday @ 4pm. If you just want to see his "Through the Seasons" show come to the info cabin by the river for a ticket - and you may be served by a guy in red. There are usually tickets for such shows though it may be popular so buy early. And queue for a good seat.

If you haven't seen Debs Newbold then you are in for a treat. Benji Kirkpatrick AND Will playing.

Here's a clicky for "In Tune"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b2m7zg

Will Pound @
approx
7:50
& 34:10
interview 39:20
& mouth organ 44:30

From these examples I think I preferred his mouth organ playing.
The interview was interesting enough for this sort of programme.
Generally I'm thrilled to see youngsters getting involved and showing these skills & enthusiasm.

~~~~~~~
I'll second Mr Red's comments about Debs Newbold.
As The Sandman says it was the lack of dancing lift specifically that I found hard. I'm all for new experimental styles but couldn't quite see how this style of playing made it easy for the general public audience to understand the differences between the different types of morris dance - none of the tunes played were easily recognisable but worse the changes in emphasis and timing of the notes according to the different traditions seemed to get lost. This was on a well known programme on a prime BBC radio channel and I am not sure it gave listeners a representation of morris styles in a way that might engage interest
Simon Care is the one to listen to for morris tunes.
Would have been better to ask someone who knows a bit about Morris to cover this- like Reg Hall, but then he's not a folkie
THE OVER STYLISED FIDDLER, MARTIN HAYES has done pretty well, so good luck Will Pound. Plough on, etc.
not sure if the many rapper sides in the Northeast would like to be classified as a 'kind of Morris dance' either!
The things you think when you're not thinking! I took the subject line to me "I will pound on BBC Radio if you give me a front row".
But the general public confuse Morris with Mumming. Gawd knows how they distiguish Molly, if ever.
Those who didn't see the show at Chippenham missed a fantastic show. Will had gathered around him some of the best Folk performers IMNSHO. The music was excellent, but it could have been just another excelent show without Debs. I was singing the praises to anyone buying tickets and she dun me proud, as she would in any show she performed in. For a show about Morris there was no actual dancing, just a stylised drawing type video. If you haven't seen Debs yet - you is missing out PAL!
