Subject: a last direct link to Cole Porter From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 21 May 18 - 12:16 PM I just read of the death of actress/Broadway singer Patricia Morison. She was over 100 years old and I was shocked to read the notice, because I presumed her dead long before this. Cole Porter cast Patricia Morison in his first production of 'Kiss Me Kate,' and she introduced songs such as 'I Hate Men' to Broadway. If you know where to look, you can find black-and-white video of her singing that song. And what a trouper Morison must have been, to replace Gertrude Lawrence in 'The King And I' years later, touring with Yul Brynner. So Patricia Morison is in that generation that premiered Cole Porter songs, with singers from Mabel Mercer to Mary Martin to Ethel Merman. Do they make 'em like that any more? |
