As a Radio 4 addict, I usually go elsewhere after The Archers, cos the pretentious b*ggers on Front Row gerron me wotsits.
But this evening they did a wonderful full programme on Dame Cleo.
She came from a mixed race family, but overcame all the silly prejudices of her time.
If there ever was an argument for the power of music then surely Cleo's story epitomises that.
Go on the BBC website and have a listen.
Roger.

It's hard to believe she's 90 years old. I've always thought of her as ageless.

It's good to see that this program is also playable here in the U.S.:

It was a lovely, affectionate programme. And I usually turn Front Row off too!

I remember seeing her, one of 3 singers performing at a TV recording in Elstree Studios ( I lived one mile away during the 1960s) - ah yes Milicent Martin was one but I forget the other.

John Dankworth (has he died?), Cleo Laine's musical director, manager, and husband,
wrote a hilarious satire to be sung
called "Dunsinane Blues."

keberoxu, If you listen to the programme (if it is available where you are), you will hear a recording of her announcing his death at the end of a concert in 2010, where she had performed as normal in order not to disappoint the audience.
