From: Joe Offer
Date: 29 May 18 - 04:22 PM

Camp Arrival time 2 PM Thursday, Dec 27. Please do not arrive early. Google Maps says it takes 33 minutes to drive from Novato to the camp - it's a beautiful drive, so drive slow and enjoy it. The closest store is 20 minutes away, so get all your supplies before you arrive at camp. There is no cell phone reception at camp, but Internet does work by WiFi.

Camp Harmony is new again! We are enthusiastic to have secured Walker Creek Ranch for our New Year’s camp from Thursday, December 27 to Tuesday, January 1. Attendees may come for all or part. We welcome newcomers, and if you will be a first-time attendee, please feel free to email or phone with your questions. Camp registration ended November 22. If you didn't sign up in time, we hope you can make it next year.

The venue: Walker Creek Ranch, in rural Marin County, is known to some in our community as a great retreat spot for other musical gatherings. Its level site nestled into surrounding hills features accessible buildings clustered for convenience.

Facilities include a central dining hall and other spacious halls suitable for dancing, concerts, and large group activities. There are numerous rooms for workshops, Arts & Crafts, and lots of smaller spaces for jamming. The property offers walking trails and a scenic bridge over the Creek. There’s even a natural history museum for learning about local flora and fauna.

Housing: Walker Creek offers a range of housing options, and because Walker Creek charges different rates for these options, our fees are rated accordingly. This location is remote from any off-site lodging. The registration form provides space to explain any accessibility needs.

Workshop spaces will be available for signups Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Sessions are usually one hour, but feel free to sign up for a two-hour session if you have good reason.

Post your workshops below in this thread. Give your name, name of the workshop (four words or fewer, please), an explanation of what the workshop is about, and the day you want to have your workshop.

Camp begins Thursday evening, December 27; and ends Tuesday Morning, January 1.
Again, a link to the new venue, Walker Creek Ranch, owned and operated by the Marin County Office of Education. It's a half-hour drive from any town, so be sure to bring everything you need to camp.

-Joe-

per email from Bev Praver
First request is for a workshop to remember Jerry Praver.
Also, a 2-hour parodies workshop.

I'm going to put the Jerry Praver memorial late in camp- Monday 4-6:15 pm, in the museum, parodies Friday 1:30-3:45 in Buckeye.

From Patience: While awaiting feedback from others, this looks likely as our lineup of seven official Workshop spaces:
  • Maple: Dance Hall, workshops; evening dances
  • Buckeye: largest general-workshop space; evening concerts - I'm going to equate this to the carpeted room until Patience tells me otherwise.
  • Muir: large workshop space; backup for evening singing - patience says it's great for instrumental jams. There might be some noise bleedover from Carson.
  • Museum:   mid-sized, esp. for singing workshops; evening singing - I'm going to equate this to Ruben's House until Patience corrects me.
  • Kitchen:   for small workshops [<10), small instruments, specialized (=small-group) singing - Patience emphasized that this is only for very small groups.
  • Carson:   mid-sized room for quieter activities not disturbed by, or disturbing, Muir
  • Madrone OR Critter: small workshops
Make a slot for Madrone, and we’ll change to a CRITTER, if available, on the actual Workshop boards
[CRITTER being the working name for an unoccupied dorm room to be determined, pending housing assignments]

Here's a link (click) to the map the camp provided. I don't have permission yet to post the Camp Harmony map.

I would like to lead my Significant Songs Workshop, songs of personal significance, songs you can't get through it without crying (2 hours Sunday?) as well as a Jaeger & Reid Concert Judi Jaeger & Bob Reid (1 hour Saturday?) and perhaps a children's workshop (1.5 hours, whenever). I think we will be there for all of camp.

#2. (Two hours) TRANSFORMATION: traditional songs and tales about enchantments, shape-changing, crossdressing, illusion, disguise, elf time, and afterlife changes)

SONGS FAITH PETRIC SANG

I don't want to conflict with Bev Praver's workshops or with Triple Crown, though.

Thanks for doing this!
Hi Joe,
I omitted the time and day I'd like to have my workshop. Eleven AM on either Friday or Saturday.
Thanks,

Hi All! this is an inquiry not a proposal, because I honestly don't know if it would be useful or not. Would you like there to be a workshop where songwriters who do not perform (or who have written songs that use a different vocal range from their own) get together with performers who are looking for new material, and see if there are matches? or are you satisfied with how folks currently offer, swap and cover?

I dunno, Jennifer, since I'm not a songwriter. It could be an interesting twist on our very popular songwriting workshops. You're certainly welcome to try just about anything. Just give a workshop name (four words or fewer), day, and approximate time of day.
Why not give it a try?

Spoons Workshop with Monika White. Learn the basics of playing the spoons then work on a couple of fancy moves. It's fun and requires no experience. Spoons provided for workshop participants.

"How to Play Anything" with Roger Goodman. Learn the magic of music that can be applied to any instrument. You'll be surprised!

JOE: please schedule these 2 workshops so they are not at the same time. I need Roger to help with the spoons workshop. Thanks!

I'd like to lead SONGS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN -- sharing storytime staples, campfire favorites, and lullabies, etc. I'm there all 4 days. My background is children's musical theatre and children's librarianship. Kids attending camp are, of course, very welcome!

Hi, Remy - how about 11-12 AM Sunday in Museum?

Hi, Everybody -

We had a camp committee meeting last night, along with a delicious vegetarian meal and Joe's famous store-bought pie (but it's good). My wife will be so proud of me that I ate vegetarian.

We've decided to call the camp, Camp Harmony, since we are not at Camp Newman anymore, at least until they rebuild after last year's fire.

The long-awaited decision has been made: the Famous Triple Crown will be on the afternoon of Saturday, December 29 - John Barleycorn Workshop, Pub Songs, and Sea Chanteys.

We will follow more-or-less the same workshop schedule we had last year at Monte Toyon, with 1-hour workshops and a 15-minute break between workshops. There will probably be no workshops during lunchtime.

Early Bird registration for camp ends at NOON on October 19, so you'd better hurry to sign up if you want the discount. This year, the final registration deadline is NOON on November 22, because Walker Creek wants earlier notice about the number of campers we have each day. There's lots of room for everyone, but only if you sign up on time.

See you at camp.

-Joe-

Hi Joe:

Friday afternoon, I'd like to do Sad Songs in a sort of largish room. (because this is usually pretty popular)

Sunday afternoon, I'd like to do Songs about Money, Wealth & Poverty. Can probably be in a smaller room if needed.

A bit hard to say exact times without seeing a grid and without knowing the meal schedule, and without seeing the other events, but put me where and when you think best, and after the grid is up, I'll let you know if I need it changed.

If possible, I would like to attend Songs Faith Petric Sang and Sadie's Family Values.

P.S. I support the committee's name change decision. Website says "New" all over the place, though. I realize it's just been two days since the meeting!

All the songs that I know are very simple and sung in English. Day by Day from Godspell would be an excellent example. There is no need for a songbook or handouts. People are welcome to bring their own devotional songs too. If you bring songs to the gathering, my request is that the lyrics be less than two "sentences" long, easy to learn, and have an open all-encompassing inclusive spiritual theme.

I have a preference to doing this before noon and on Sunday but the day is not nearly as important doing it before noon.

Two hours if possible but one hour is OK too.

Thanks,
Ralph

Hi, Ralph- I'm thinking two hours is too long, and I thought maybe you could split the same venue with Gospel for Sunday morning. I'll leave that to you to decide. I set aside the kitchen for you from 9:45-noon Sunday.

Hi Joe,

What if we call the chant workshop, Personal, Planetary and Spiritual Chants. Is that too many words?

Ralph

We would like to lead an Oldtime Jam and we will call it Andronico’s Jam after the OT session we’ve been leading for 5 years Odd Tuesday’s 7-9:30 at Andronico’s Market in the Sunset District of San Francisco. We’ve raised close to $8,000 for the SF Food Bank just by collecting donations from folks passing by.

Hi, Dinah & Noah - I put you at 1:30-2:30 Saturday in Muir, the hour before the John Barleycorn Workshop. Hope that's good.

Most likely, we won't have the long, leisurely mealtimes we had at Camp Newman and with Debby McClatchy. Our meals will probably be an hour, maybe just a bit longer. So, we're figuring on not having scheduled workshops during meals. Of course, campers are welcome to use workshop spaces 24 hours a day.
Carroll, you won't be on the regular schedule, but each day's schedule will have a notice about your sessions.

OK, so the schedule grids are up and waiting to be filled.

Any day but Friday.
Not conflicting with Spoons, Significant Songs or Jaeger/Reed concert.

We will each get a chance to talk about our own experiences with wildfires, smoke, drought, storms, flooding, electricity bills, artificial snow, crop failure, migration, or whatever it is we need to process in order to face what is happening, unite for survival, and sing our way to victory.

I'd like to propose a few workshops this year,
I leave it you you Joe to figure out when would be good for them, but here are some ideas...
The first: Songs that Sound Traditional, but ARE NOT TRADITIONAL!
Muir- Monday 2:45

Irish Songs, Muir/ Museum, or wherever--- during Barleycorn set-up.

Now's your chance to sing the Holiday songs you most wanted to. Muir/ Museum, Friday
and
Hoping to have a good time for a Yes M'am concert in there too, but don't want it opposite, the swing dance, or Bob Reid-Judi Jaeger, or Jerry's memorial.

Hoping there will be good space for these workshops. Not really stuck on the details.

Thank you!
-Amelia

Hi, Amelia -
Non-trad that sound trad: Monday, Muir, 1:30-2:30 PM
Irish Songs Sat 1:30-2:30, Madrone
Holiday songs you most wanted Sat 4:15-5, Museum (changed so that Ed S. could attend)

2:45 - 3:45 English Music Hall songs

Hi - two workshops please:

If it's OK with the dance hall moppers, I'd like to do Old Time Piano Backup in Maple every day at 1:30, except Sunday when it would conflict with the Meeting. So, piano class Friday, Saturday, and Monday?

Broadway Musicals song swap, 2 hrs if possible, not to conflict with the big singing sessions like Barleycorn or David's Music Hall thing. It looks like possible times would be Sunday or Monday from 4:00 to 6:15, either Muir, Buckeye or Museum. BTW I'm bringing a few Broadway song books this year.

Hi, Kathrine. I asked the camp committee for opinions on the mopping/piano combination, but I think you'd know better than anyone whether there'd be a conflict. I'll find a place for the Broadway session later. -Joe-

Hi, Joe,

Can you put me down for a daily English Country Dance in the dance hall? I can take any slot before the one containing the actual John Barleycorn and Pub Songs (so during sea shanties is okay, or before the triple crown starts). I will not have ECD on Sunday (I have to be offsite that afternoon).

Can you tell me if there is a shape note session scheduled yet? It’s the only other workshop I know I want to attend, but if it’s a conflict, I’ll live with it.

I know I should be able to do this myself, but I have always found the Muscat experience to be impenetrable.

I may continue to lead an ECD workshop at that time and place if there seems to be sufficient interest, and the space is free, but I think I will decide that at camp after the first day.

The dance on the first night is ECD, followed by Balkan, so we need to do that at least.

Mr.Offer -- Thank you for putting the Philadelphia Mummers on my preferred day. Thank you for including the Story Swap. I wish Amelia's Holiday songs wasn't opposite a holiday celebration, Shabbat. Is it too late to change that? Not that it really matters but Silberman is not spelled with a v. When you get to the middle of my name you get a shiver.
Dear Mr. Silberman. I am most delighted to hear from you, and I am most embarrassed by my misspelling of your surname. I know the proper spelling full well. In my defense, please note that I spelled your name correctly in Saturday, and didn't spell it wrong until the very last day of camp. Note that I moved the Holiday Songs workshop up to the hour before Shabbat, hoping that Amelia won't mind (it's her workshop). And in humble contrition, I corrected the spelling of the name "Silberman."
I look forward to seeing you at camp every year, and wish we could see each other more often. We have the most interesting talks.

I would like to offer:

(1)Humorous Songs (Songs of Tom Lehrer, Smothers Brothers, Kingston Trio, New Christy Minstrels, Benny Bell, etc.)
on Friday at 5:15pm in the Museum.

(2)Guitarists Play Ukes, Banjos (A baritone uke is tuned the same as the four strings of a guitar--D-G-B-E. Other ukes are tuned with the same relationship between string notes. As a four-string banjo may also be tuned D-G-B-E, a guitarist can play ukes and 4-string banjos without learning any new fingering! Come try it.)
on Saturday at 9:45am in the Kitchen.

Alan Candee

Done! -Joe-

I'm going to close online signups now. From now on, please sign up at camp if you want to lead workshops. See you there!

Note that there's a New Year's Ceilidh followed by Contra Dance in Maple Dance Hall on December 31. Last year's ceilidh was wonderful. This one may be even better.
See you at camp.

Another freeze tonight. Camp has been fun, but I'm ready to sleep in my own bed.
